Thank You,

C hrist is ris-en! He is

risen indeed! This common statement and response has been used by the Christian com-munity for generations. It is an affirmation of our faith. It is a statement of what has taken place and what is to come. We celebrate this history because it is our pre-sent and our future. It is as if all time collapses into a single mo-ment defined as the Christ event.

Our understanding and experience of time is transformed into a new reality. We live in the experience of the resurrection. As the great Christian hymn proclaims… "Where o death is thy sting?"

The way we spend this time be-comes a call in itself. Of course we rejoice- -rejoice always in the Lord! And we are called to bring this joy to others. We are called to help usher in sacred time for oth-ers: for those in need, for those who are alone and for all who feel lost. It is Christ's time and it is time well spent.

Happy Easter!

- Allen

L aMont DeBruhl,

a life long member of Kenilworth Presbyterian Church, has served our church in several capacities.

At 25 years of age he served as chairman of the Board of Deacons (as it was known then). He was and still may be the youngest to have held that position at KPC.

Since 1998 LaMont has served as the KPC Sexton. This is an im-portant position in our church. As sexton, LaMont is caretaker of our church building and its con-tents.

In practice, LaMont is a ‘jack of all trades’. He can be found maintaining and repairing the church electrical, plumbing and heating systems. He is called up-on to do carpentry and painting as needed. A big job at this time of the year is lawn maintenance which includes mowing and trim-ming shrubs and trees.

All these jobs require the proper equipment. LaMont maintains and repairs our equipment. He even does welding, e.g., as he repaired the mower.

When you saw the Easter banners on our sanctuary walls, it was LaMont who placed them there.

Stand Against Racism, which happens annu-ally in April, is a partnership of YWCA Associations throughout the country with the goal of bring-ing people together from all walks of life to raise awareness that rac-ism still exists and that it can no longer be ignored or tolerated.

This is the 5th year that KPC has participated in the Stand Against Racism. We will take a Stand during our Sunday worship service on April 26. This is a powerful event where we reflect on the past and vow to end racism in our community. This event is also an opportunity to expand local discussions around racial justice, the fact that racism still exists as a problem today and what we as individuals can do to combat it. Racism is unaccepta-ble.

Please join our church community to take a ‘Stand Against Racism’ at our April 26 church service.

Recently I observed LaMont replacing a fluorescent light tube. He was fearless as he climbed a ladder to the top of the sanctu-ary wall and reached in to re-place the light.

He shared with me that he takes great pride in working behind the scenes to ensure that our wor-shipers are comfortable. He also enjoys working with KPC mem-bers who occasionally volunteer to help out.

Please join in giving LaMont a big ‘Thank You’.

LaMont’s “Sermon on a Tie”

“For God so loved the world,

that he gave his only begotten

Son, that whosoever believeth in

him should not perish, but have

everlasting life.”

I t's time to get back in the gar-den. This year marks the 5th

year that KPC has grown food for Loving Food Resources. We have grown a ton (literally) of food and have given it all away! Jesus spent much of his ministry speaking directly to agrarian communities in parables that they could relate to. Sowing, reaping

and the faith of a mustard seed.....These parables relate to us all. Let's spend time together outside of the walls of the church and live the biblical mandate of feeding those that are hungry.

We will break ground and share Holy Communion togeth-er on Earth Day, April 22 at 6pm in the garden. We will sow seeds of hope and say prayers for the hungry.

There will be a special Blessing of the Seeds on Sunday April 19 during worship. Remember , the first thing that God did after completing creation was to plant a garden, the Garden of Eden.

We need volunteers to help with the garden. Please be a part of this important ministry.

Maundy Thursday

Service

M aundy Thursday begins the Three Days (or Triduum),

remembering the new command-ment that Christ gave us in word and deed as he taught us how to love one another, washing our feet as a servant. We also celebrate the Lord’s Supper, remembering the meal Christ shared with his disci-ples before his death.” -PCUSA

On Thursday, April 2 we held a Maundy Thursday Tenebrae ser-vice at 6:30pm in the Sanctuary. We shared this solemn and special time with our Land of Sky UCC friends.

Tenebrae is the Latin word for shadows. This Holy Week worship has been practiced by Christians of many generations, as far back as medieval monastics.

With the sanctuary darkened, bib-lical accounts of Jesus final days, his suffering and death, were read. Candles were progressively extin-guished with each reading. Holy Communion was shared.

After the final candle was extin-guished, there was time for final meditation and then everyone de-parted the sanctuary in silence.

However, the silence is not the end. Our silence is part of a new beginning of new life through Christ our savior. We remember the past to better live our present and future.

On Sunday morning we live the resurrection and all is made new. The silence is replaced with shouts of joy. Our shadows are overcome by the light of a new creation.

continues to be a big suc-

cess! Thank you to everyone who

has donated baby care items to

KPC. These items will be distrib-

uted to Foster families and par-

T he First Wednesday of each month is our monthly Kenil-

worth Discussion Series. Next one is May 6. We will be continu-ing our study and discussion of Islam. We will meet in the Parlor from 6-7:30pm. Pizza and salad will be provided. This is a great opportunity to deepen your under-standing of the world and our friends of different faiths.

Dignity Drive

D ignity Drive continues to

support area homeless shelters and Loving Food Resources. It may not be a pretty subject to talk about but the fact is that person-al care items are DESPERATE-LY needed by Loving Food Resources and area homeless shelters.

Personal care items cannot be purchased with Food Stamps so many people have to rely with-out basic care items such as soap, toilet paper, diapers, adult incontinence products and femi-nine hygiene products.

Please continue to bring these items to KPC for distribution or see Katie with questions. We have donated over 1,000 diapers to needy families, hundreds of feminine hygiene products to Loving Food Resources and bags of soap/shampoo to the homeless shelter (and that is not all)! If you would like to do-nate funds towards the purchase of these items please write "Dignity Drive" on the subject line of your check.

Thank you for your support of this ministry.

60th Annual Easter Egg Hunt

T he 60th Annual Kenil-worth Easter Egg Hunt was held on Saturday, April

4 at KPC.

Under Judy Taylor’s leadership, an eggs stuffing party was held on March 31. Over 900 plastic eggs were filled with treats.

(Left to Right) Edna Banes, Mil-lie Bruns, Linda Underwood, Juanita Moeller, Judy Taylor, Marsha Cox, Julian Marbut stuff-ing Easter eggs . Also helping were Bob Craddock, Dan Breen and David Taylor. Thank you to the many people, including neighbors, who contributed eggs, candy and /or money.

Despite threatening weather ear-ly, the sun came out and a large crowd of families assembled on the front lawn.

Allen welcomed everyone, explained

the true meaning of Easter (to cele-

brate the resurrection) and gave in-

structions, especially to give to others.

The front lawn was alive with joy. Ice

cream was enjoyed.

Here are Sally, Edna, Millie and Jul-

ian, our ice cream servers, grooving

to the music.

The Sanctuary was made festive

with lilies and with banners pro-

you to all who bought lilies and to

those who helped with arrange-

The “Sonrise Service” was well attended. Allen gave

a brief message. Edna Banes read the biblical account

of the resurrection. ‘Jesus Christ is Risen Today’ was

sung.

Our traditional Easter Break-

fast Buffet was enjoyed by

all.

Allen illustrated the im-

portance of sharing God’s

Love by having our youth

pass beach balls around to

everyone in the sanctuary.

Consensus was that our Easter Service was attended by

92 folks.
