This has led to the area experiencing growth across residential, commercial and industrial construction and Kennards Hire opening its newest branch at Rutherford, a major thoroughfare on the New England Highway. Key Account Manager Matt Perry explained, “Opening a branch at Rutherford has been part of Kennard’s expansion plans for the region.

“Rutherford is a central location. The area sees a lot of passing traffic to the mines and new estates being developed,” Matt said. “This new branch enables Kennards Hire to better serve the needs of our customers in the area and provides them with a more convenient option than our Lambton branch as they head up the highway.”

The 3,000 square metre purpose-built hire centre is located on the corner of Mirage Road and New England Highway. The site has two entrance points and a dual lane driveway that

can be easily accessed by large vehicles, such as tilt-trays and low-loaders. There’s also a large car park that enables customers to easily and safely load and unload equipment.

“Being open on weekends also gives customers greater flexibility ordering, picking up and dropping off equipment or having it delivered to site.”

The breadth of equipment available from Kennards Hire Rutherford is more expansive and differs from most other Kennards Hire branches.

“The new Kennards Hire Rutherford branch allows us to focus on providing customers in the area and surrounding districts with faster delivery times,” said Matt.

In addition to an extensive range of general hire equipment, the Rutherford branch houses a large range of access and earthmoving equipment including excavators and compactors. They also carry compressors, lighting towers, toilets and some traffic equipment including coloured message boards and traffic lights.

Kennards Hire Rutherford is approximately 500 metres from the purpose-built facility for specialist business Kennards Hire Rail, which opened in August last year, and close to Kennards Hire Pump & Power in the township of Singleton.

Kennards Hire Rutherford is open Monday to Friday from 6:30am – 5:00pm and Saturday and Sunday from 7:30am – 4:00pm.

“Many of our customers operate seven days a week, so to provide them with the service and equipment they need when they need it, it just makes sense for us to be open seven days a week too,” Matt added.

New Tracked BoBcaT a clear favouriTewhen surveying and deciding how to clear his 800 square metre yard, Simon thompson knew it was a job he didn’t want to do with a shovel and wheelbarrow.

As the owner of local electrical business, Thompson Power, Simon had hired a Bobcat previously from Kennards Hire Orange for other jobs, but this was the first time he had used the new T190 Tracked Bobcat.

“We had to knock down a couple of sheds, which were built on concrete slabs,” Simon explained. “We then had to break up and remove the concrete as well as a lot of garden waste, large rocks, old timber sleepers and trees that were cut down. The 4-in-1 also made light work of removing the tree stumps.”

To remove the waste material from site, Kennards Hire also provided a 2-tonne tipper truck. Once cleared, Simon used the Tracked Bobcat to distribute and level a large load of topsoil and fertiliser.

Simon said one of the benefits of the Tracked Bobcat is it’s very easy to drive, even for someone who hasn’t spent a lot of time in the machine.

“Comfort is another great feature,” he said. “The sealed cabin keeps the interior dust-free and air conditioning allows the operator to stay cool, even on the hottest summer days.”

Simon also enjoyed the smooth ride the Tracked Bobcat provides, “With a wheeled machine when you move over rough ground you feel every bump. The tracks just roll over them so you don’t bounce around,” he said. “It’s also far more stable on uneven ground and it doesn’t tear up the turf like wheeled machines can.”

Building on a solid customer service foundation

For the construction of a new multi-storey apartment complex in Melbourne, Kennards Hire Richmond provided leading construction company ELEMENT FIVE with a 300kg Reversible Vibrating Plate Compactor.

Called ‘The Clifton’, the complex is located on Clifton Street in the exclusive inner city suburb of Prahran, and comprises of 47 high-end one and two bedroom apartments.

“Due to a weight and live load limit around the basement walls, the structural engineer had to approve the size of the compactor being used before it could go on site,” explained ELEMENT FIVE Site Manager, Stephen Denyar.

“We told Kennards the type and weight of compactor we needed and they were able to supply it immediately.”

In addition to ease-of-use and reduced vibration making the machine more comfortable for the operator, the compactor features side skirts, which provides a 600mm width plate.

“Its a machine that delivers great compaction but is also very easily manouvered around the job site, especially in limited access areas,” Stephen said.

“We have used reversible vibrating plate compactors from Kennards Hire on previous projects. We’re familiar with how they work and the job they do. This makes them a preferred piece of equipment.”

product offering between the 40’ hybrid (electric/diesel)

and 43’ diesel all terrain scissor lifts and the 26’ all

terrain scissor lifts.

“One of the biggest benefits for customers is they have the

same width and length as the 26’ units,” said Harry. “This

narrow width enables them to be manoeuvred around tight

spaces, but they have an additional 1.83 metres in height

and are only 200 kilograms heavier.”

The new Skyjack 32’ All Terrain Scissor Lifts feature self-

levelling outriggers, have a 465 kilogram safe working load

and a 240 volt socket on the platform so operators can use

power tools.

With non-marking tyres they are suitable for internal use in

areas with good ventilation, making them ideal for indoor

sports centres with wooden floors, exhibition centres and

buildings with high ceilings.

“This makes them ideally suited to jobs where the 26’ units

don’t have the required height and the 40’ and 43’ units

are too wide to access the area,” Harry added.

Since moving from France 12 years ago, Award winning winemaker and owner of Madrez wine Services, Chris derrez, has been producing some of Australia’s best known wines and ciders for growers across NSw and viC.

The sale of leased premises led to Chris relocating to a new 1,800 square metre facility. To help make the transition easier, Chris hired a range of equipment from Kennards Hire Orange.

The equipment ranged from a Nifty 150 boom lift used for painting, welding and installation of pipelines, Scissor lifts for assembling storage racks, several Hilti hammers, a concrete saw and a 4,000psi pressure washer and rotary Kleen as well as a Stella hot wash. Chris also hired a Hi-Lux Ute and car trailer and an excavator to clear and level the ground around the new facility.

“At Madrez Wine Services, we squeeze grapes, apples and cherries for the production of alcoholic beverages,” explained Chris. “Dismantling, moving and re-assembling the fermentation vats, filtering and processing equipment is a huge and exhaustive task. “We also have bottling and packaging lines, storage racks and a distribution centre.”

Kennards Hire opened its Orange branch in April 2013, and apart from the range of equipment available, what impressed Chris most was the level of customer service he received.

“With Kennards Hire being new to the area we decided to try them out for the relocation,” he said. “The customer service and advice we received really helped make the move easier.

Keeping water at Bay

The project will restore car and foot traffic between the busy thoroughfares of New Street and Beach Road. The upgrade includes new boom barriers, flashing warning lights and an automated pedestrian crossing.

Following a long dry period, Melbourne experienced heavy rainfall throughout July and August. This led to an increase in demand for powerful and reliable pumps from Kennards Hire Pump & Power on constructions sites.

At the level crossing upgrade, one of the challenges faced by leading rail and civil works company, Australian Railway Construction and Consulting (ARCC), was dealing with water that accumulated in the track-side trenches.

Mark Fletcher, Director at ARCC said, “The water in the trenches was not only from the rain, but underground seepage from excavating so close to the bay.”

Kennards Hire in the neighbouring suburb of Moorabbin supplied a flexdrive pump to clear the water from the trenches and keep them dry.

“Having a branch so close to the site was very convenient. It meant we could get equipment on site very quickly and this minimised any downtime,”

Mark said. ARCC is a specialist company providing end-to-end construction solutions exclusively for large and small rail projects across Australia.

In addition to the flexdrive pump, Kennards Hire Moorabbin also supplied a tipper, 1.5 tonne excavator, demolition saw, laser level, a heavy duty electric jackhammer and a small generator to provide additional power for tools.

“The staff are very professional. They’re knowledgeable about their equipment and products and always offered great advice,” Mark added.

After closing in 2007, the heritage listed railway crossing in the bay side suburb of brighton, 11km south-east of Melbourne’s Cbd, is being upgraded and re-opened.

Located 12 kilometres from Melbourne’s city centre, Valley Lake at Niddrie was once the site of a Basalt Quarry, which closed in 1976.

Site Manager, Simon Judge said the generators were used to power the site sheds as well as tradesmen’s tools and compressors.

“The most beneficial thing about the generators being trailer mounted as opposed to skid mounted is their ease of manoeuvrability,” said Simon. “We could simply move them from one area to another as demand for power increased or decreased.

Named after Sir Reginald Ansett, the grandstand was opened on 5 August 2004, while the history of the racecourse dates back to 1899.

The project required the removal of the existing HVC unit and replacing it with two new Daikin package units, said NAMS Industries Installation Site Supervisor, Scott Mackenzie.

“In addition, all the duct work was replaced and upgraded to exposed powder-coated spiro, which is secured to the ceiling,” Scott explained.

To safely access the four metre high ceiling and install the 40 metres of air conditioning duct, Kennards Hire delivered to Scott and his team

two vertical personnel lifts, material hoists, and step ladders.

“The vertical personnel lifts added to the efficiency of installation. They’re easy to operate and manoeuvre, and there’s room for all your tools in the cage.

“The ducts are internally lined, making them extremely heavy,” Scott said. “The material hoists were used to hold the ducts in place while we joined and secured them.”

New keNNards Traffic Bollard TruckHiTs THe roadwhen 120,000 vehicles per day use the same road for 13 years, it’s not surprising when it needs some maintenance. over the Christmas and New Year period, more than 40,000 square metres of new asphalt was laid in Melbourne’s burnley tunnel.

To add to the safety and efficiency of the project, Kennards Hire Traffic Laverton supplied its newly developed bollard truck.

“The specially designed truck has wells cut into each side of the tray to enable maintenance personnel to safely stand and deploy bollards as the truck drives along,” explained Jamie Haitas, Victorian Traffic Manager at Kennards Hire Traffic.

“It also features a Fall Arrest System, which runs along the centre of the truck and is complete with safety harnesses attached by an inertia reel. This provides the crew unrestricted movement and the freedom to walk up and down the length of the truck safely,” said Jamie.

Kennards Hire Traffic purchased the truck specifically for use by road maintenance crews. The fit-out, which comprised of replacing of the tray, re-wiring and painting as well as obtaining engineering and compliance certificates.

The bollard truck is the latest addition to the fleet of traffic control equipment available from Kennards Hire Traffic, which includes Attenuators and Message Boards, Barriers, Lighting Towers, including the new LED Solar Powered Light Tower and Road Plates.

The clipping machines, available with diesel or petrol powered motors are capable of inserting or extracting rail clips from both sides of the rail simultaneously every five seconds.

To meet the increased demand of clipper machines from rail maintenance crews and contractors, Kennards Hire Rail has assembled a fleet of e-clip and fast-clip clipping machines with plans to expand in the near future. highly accurate NAtA calibrated hydrostatic testing equipment is now available from Kennards hire’s newly established specialist business unit, Kennards hire test & Measure.

One of the first projects to utilise the new equipment was a gold mine in the regional hub of Dubbo NSW, approximately 400 kilometres north-west of Sydney.

Jeffrey Butterfield, Logistics Co-ordinator at Interquip Construction Pty Ltd explained the role the Hydrostatic Test Pump and Kit played to test a new pipeline.

“One of the requests from the construction supervisor was the testing unit had a NATA certified gauge. Kennards Hire Dubbo was able to supply the exact unit we needed and provide a calibration certificate.”

After completing pipe works around the processing plant, water is pumped into sections of the line between valves, which were shut off to build line pressure.

“The Hydrostatic Pump and Kit was connected to the line and used to test the specified kPa was achieved and check for leaks around flanges and joints,” Jeffery said.

“A reading is taken when the pipe is first pressurised and a second reading after a specified time has elapsed. If that section of line is within tolerance it’s signed off; if not the pipe is investigated for a leak or other issue, repaired and re-tested.”

when a mine site in papua New guinea needed to refurbish its 60” x 110” gyratory crusher, a key piece of specialised equipment from Kennards hire Lift & Shift was required before the project could commence. the only problem was, they didn’t have it as part of their fleet. the solution, buy it and ship it to site.

Mine Mechanical Field Trainer, Warren Walker said, “Apart from installing a new crusher, the removal and full mechanical rebuild is one of the biggest jobs on a crushing mine site. To do the job we needed a hydraulic torque wrench capable of torqueing to 25 000 Nm (newton metres) on a 145mm A/F nut.”

The three week project required the crusher, made up of three separate components – top, middle and bottom shells, to be dismantled, refurbished then re-assembled.

Located at unit 5, 53 Burrows Road Alexandria, the site is central to the Domestic and International Airports and Australia’s largest shipping container handling facility at Port Botany.

“Alexandria is the gateway to Sydney’s south,” said Branch Manager Jason Beeton. “We opened the new branch so we could focus on providing customers in this area and surrounding districts with better service and faster delivery times.”

General Manager of Kennards Hire Lift & Shift, Andrew Lambert, explained that, “Opening a new Lift & Shift branch has been planned for some time. Securing a site that had an area large enough to accommodate the range of equipment was very important so we had to hold off until we found a suitable location.”

The 600 square metre warehouse site also features a car park that allows customers easy access for loading and unloading equipment. Andrew says the new Kennards Hire Lift & Shift branch provides a key link in the supply chain to serving the needs of customers in central and southern Sydney.

“It also allows the flagship Kennards Hire Lift & Shift branch at Silverwater to concentrate on serving customers in Sydney’s north and greater west,” he added.

The range available from the new Kennards Hire Lift & Shift Alexandria branch extends from

supplier in the United States and arranged for it to be sent to site,” Warren said.

“That’s outstanding customer service considering where we are situated in PNG, and if they weren’t able to deliver, it would have thrown the whole project out.”

Warren explained the PNG mechanics hadn’t had a lot of experience or exposure to hydraulic torque equipment. “They are easier to handle, simple to operate and being calibrated they’re much more accurate than a traditional air operated rattle gun.”

Representatives from the manufacturer of the crusher were on site to sign-off on the re-build. “It’s important all fastenings meet BOEX specification. With hydraulic torque equipment from Kennards Hire Lift & Shift, a certificate of calibration accuracy is supplied.

“Kennards Hire Lift & Shift were great to deal with and the lengths they went to, to ensure we had the equipment we needed is a credit to them. I’d have no hesitation using them again on any other project,” he added.

Kennards hire Lift & Shift are now able to offer the Australian materials handling industry a groundbreaking and innovative new technology, radio remote control of pendant air hoists.

“The unit has been custom-designed for specialist business Kennards Hire Lift & Shift,” said Steve Purves of Pacific Hoists, “and it’s already proving a definite highlight in their fleet of material handling equipment.”

With a line of sight operating range of up to 100 metres, the new remote control technology adds to efficiency as it negates issues concerning air hose length limitations on standard pneumatic pendants and rope lengths on cord control models. It also delivers faster reaction times of remote to hoist in less than 150m/s.

“By removing the restrictions associated with hose and rope lengths, we have expanded the range of application,” said Steve.

“Another advantage is the remote control capability can be available as a multi-system. This accommodates tandem & unison operation allowing up to four hoists to be operated using a single handset.”

Cord control, pendant control and remote control are all easily interchangeable which allows for more diverse application. The remote system exceeds Australian standards, and is the first example of this technology to be seen in the domestic hire market.

“The concept was developed with Kennards Hire Lift & Shift to ensure it was suitable for their customers and applications,” Steve added.

The cordless pendant control has facilitated vast improvements in productivity and execution across projects ranging from above ground mining to civil infrastructure development and commercial construction.

And The Winner is...

to recognise the significant contribution and support from equipment suppliers and other business partners, Kennards hire hosted their inaugural Supplier Awards Night on wednesday, 11 december, 2013.

The night, an industry first initiative by Kennards Hire to reward suppliers, was held at the Kennards Hire flagship Artarmon branch, which was transformed into a cabaret-style venue for the evening to host the Gala event for the 120 guests.

Guests were invited to wander through the Kennards Museum, which featured one of the first pick-up trucks available for hire in the 1950s. There was a sense of the humble beginnings of the company and how far things have come in its 65 year history and the legacy of Kennards Hire in Australia.

The night also allowed Kennards Hire to share with suppliers the company’s growth plans for the next three years and the integral role they play.

Andy Kennard was in attendance, reinforcing the fact that it remains a family company. The growth of the company and its influence was reflected by the number of representatives from some of Australia’s largest companies.

To determine the award winners, Kennards Hire branches were asked to rank suppliers based on the four cultural values.

The first award was the ‘Fair Dinkum’ award, which was presented to the supplier deemed to have delivered on their promises, was reliable, upfront and honest.

The finalists were Hilti, Hiretech and JLG, with the award going to Hilti.

The second award, ‘Every Customer A Raving Fan’ award, based on dealing with customer services and needs, saw Stihl, JLG and Hiretech as the category finalists, with JLG picking up the award.

Aptly presenting the ‘One Family’ award was Andy Kennard, which was presented to the supplier that displayed support, trust, mutual respect and care. The finalists were Pacific Hoists, N & D Mechanical and Crommelins, with the award going to N & D Mechanical.

The final award was ‘Taking Hire Higher’, the award for continuous improvement. It was presented to the supplier judged to have helped improve Kennards by bringing new ideas and solutions. The finalists were Makinex, Hilti and JLG, with Hilti walking away with their second award of the night.

The suppliers were glowing in their praise of the night and their partnerships with Kennards Hire. Richard Lawson of Pacific Hoists expressed: “It was and is a pleasure for Pacific Hoists to be associated and

recognised, as a major supplier to Kennards, something we hope continues for many years to come.”

The night concluded with Hilti receiving the prestigious title of ‘Supplier of the Year’. Hilti received a plaque and a one million dollar purchase order.

An honour role was also created to recognise suppliers who had been working with Kennards for 20 years, 30 years 40 years and 50 years.

Following the formalities of the evening, guests stayed well into the night and drinks flowed. It was also an opportunity for suppliers and Kennards Hire staff to talk about the year that was and about the exciting plans for 2014 and beyond.

Due to the success of the evening and eager requests asking when the next suppliers awards night would be, Kennards Hire have decided to make the Suppliers Awards Night a bi-annual event, making the next awards night in 2015.
