Looking forwards, looking back..

• Our stud has been in operation for 45 years• Some breeding decisions in this time have been

wonderful, and some, not as good as we hoped• We now use a combination of ASBVs, genomic

breeding values, physical appearance, structure and the knowledge gleaned from past errors and successes to inform our current and future breeding decisions to improve the rams we provide to you

• We then package these genetics in a well conditioned, fertile and low disease risk ram (or ewe) for stud and commercial clients

Kennedy Creek Stud Objectives• Use worldwide best practice genetic and genomic

technologies (Lambplan/SGA) to make genetic progress towards– Rapid growth rate to weaning without excess adult

bodyweight– Above industry average loin muscle– Moderate fat level (sale rams between +0.5 to -1.0)– Easy lambing, moderate birthweight, good lambing

ease– Easy care, fertile sheep with low disease risk

• With excellent visual appearance, muscle shape, reproductive measurements, mating ability & wool/skin quality

Stud sires• The following slides detail Lambplan figures

from August 2013(www.lambplan.com.au)• All of our sale sires (or when semen is

collected) are:– JD (Johne’s disease) MN3V (vaccinated with Gudair)– Fully vaccinated (6 in 1)– Brucellosis free (blood testing every 2nd year for over

thirty years free), footrot & lice free– Free from exotic disease (as per

www.animalhealthaustralia.gov.au)

Enquiries

• If you have any enquiries about sale animal/semen/embryo availability contact:– [email protected]

• You can also view our stud details at www.polldorset.org.au/kennedycreek

• If you want any further information about figures used refer to www.sheepgenetics.org.au

Sires of progeny born in 2013• The following pages show stud sires used to join

ewes for lambing in 2013 (Autumn and Spring drops)• Sires used this year are from Kennedy Creek and

Wyndamah Poll Dorset studs• Photos of all rams are provided (no trimming of rams

in photos – in paddock condition, often immediately following or during joining – we believe these are the most relevant photos to share) following data and comments page on each sire

Progeny measurements• Progeny are lambed down in groups of 50 to 100 ewes

and lambs weighed & e-tagged within 12 hours of birth• All lambs are kept in these groups until weaning when

they are weighed (12 weeks after lambing starts)• Separated into 1 group at weaning until early post

weaning (EPWT) data collected then run as male and female flocks

• All animals treated alike to maximise accuracy• Benchmarking sires used to maximise accuracy (five of

our current sires have been used in the sheep CRC INF 304/8, 44/9, 186/9, 122/10, 38/11)

AI – semen availability

• Kennedy Creek 44/09, 186/09, 122/10 & 38/11 available

• All sires available for collection upon request• Wyndamah 939/08 may also be collected and

will be for physical sale in 2013. KC 304/08 also for sale.

Rams in use for 2012 lambing

• 2 groups of sires:– 1. Proven sires used in previous season on farm

(10 rams)– 2. Progeny test sires on farm

(9 rams)

TOTAL SIRES USED FOR 2013 lambing = 19 rams

• Lambing divided into autumn and spring lambing (¾ ewes in autumn, ¼ ewes in spring). Approximately 400 ewes joined (including 15 month old hoggets)

Genomic breeding values (GBVs)

• Genomic breeding values on all our rams have been assessed

• This includes all of our progeny test sires and some other young “potentials”

• We are excited to continue to be involved in this to enhance data quality in difficult to measure traits (meat quality such as intramuscular fat, parasite resistance etc)

• These are currently used to avoid the use of “outlier” sires eg. poor eating quality

Note: In most seasons we commence with 6-8 progeny test sires. This number halves by the next year when data on their lambs is available. Each year after that one or more rams in this group are sold to maintain our genetic gain from new progeny test sires and keep a low generation interval (see next page). We retain a low number of older sires for the sake of good quality linkage.
