Introduction to Conformation Judging: this one-daycomprehensive seminar, which is your first step to becoming aconformation judge, is also open to new judges who are licencedfor one group or less. The seminar covers topics that include areview of judges’ rules, ringcraft practical, exhibitors’expectations, the observation program and much more.

CKC AND SUBARU CANADA, INC.CONGRATULATE SUBARU AGILITYTEAM CANADA ON A SUPERBPERFORMANCE AT AGILITYEUROPEAN OPEN 2016

Subaru Agility Team Canada (SATC) represented Canada at theAgility European Open (EO) 2016, showcasing their great skilland speed. SATC competed in both the team and individualevents and performed well despite fierce competition andextremely fast and technically difficult courses. The EO is one ofthe most significant agility competitions in the world, attracting800 human/dog teams from 35 countries all striving forexcellence in their events.

For the first time since Canada has been represented at EO,SATC qualified for the finals in the team competition.Wifi/Theresa Rector, Summit/Justine Davenport, Pixie/JulieLizotte and Swagger/Susan Garrett ranked sixth overall headinginto the finals and after finals were ninth out of 104 teams.

“Everyone at CKC was thrilled by the tremendous showing fromthe team at EO this year," said Lance Novak, CKC ExecutiveDirector. “We are so pleased to work with Subaru in support ofthis level of excellence!”

In the individual events, SATC’s Wifi/Theresa Rector andSummit/Justine Davenport did so well in the large dog category,they qualified straight to the finals. They were both in the top 30out of 400 human/dog teams heading into the finals. Alex Beitlfrom Germany judged the finals in this event and challengedcompetitors with a very difficult course. Although Canada’steams didn’t place in the finals, they gained valuable experienceand look forward to applying it to their next competition.

In the small dog category, Jazz/Ann Carrington finishedfourteenth and in the medium dog category Jazz/Meghan Turtoncompeted for their very first time at the EO, showing calmconfidence and focus throughout the event.

“Congratulations to all who competed and achieved suchimpressive results at EO this year,” said Joe Felstein, Subaru’sDirector of Marketing. “Subaru Canada is proud to support theteam and be part of their success.”

Canada’s largest dog show, the Alberta Kennel Club’s SummerClassic, welcomed Canada’s top young handlers to compete inthe Canadian Kennel Club’s Junior Handling Nationals, held atthe beautiful, world-renowned Spruce Meadows facilities onFriday, July 29, 2016.

There was stiff competition in the conformation finals withparticipants travelling from each CKC zone to participate. TheBest Overall Junior was Katie McGinn of Elmsdale, NS. This wasKatie’s third time representing her zone. A juniors competitorsince the age of seven, Katie has honed her skills under thetutelage of Allison Foley for the last six years. Katie will beattending university in the fall, but will take a break to representCanada at Crufts 2017. We wish Katie the best of luck.

While fewer in numbers, the quality and dedication of theobedience juniors was equally inspiring. The Best Overall Juniorwas Rachel Driedger of Powell River, BC. Rachel beganobedience training with a Sheltie, but competed with her newestcharge, a Belgian Shepherd Tucker. When not in the ring, Tuckerand Rachel hike, go to the beach and do “calculus homeworktogether.” Now that’s training!

The CKC’s Chairman of the Board, Bob Rowbotham, was inCalgary for the event and was impressed with the overall qualityof our young dog fanciers. He congratulated one and all, andexpressed that “all the junior representatives did their zonesproud and we wish them well in the future.”

It takes a nation to host a National, and this year’s event was noexception. Under the guidance of Richard Paquette, Chair of theCKC Junior Kennel Club, and Jan Williamson Osterbauer, JuniorNational Chair, sincere thanks goes out to the Junior Handlingzone reps who work tirelessly all year, encouraging the nextgeneration – the future of our sport.

Judges and sponsors are also a crucial part of any successfulevent. Thank you to our conformation judges Helen Davio, DougMcIntyre, Chrissy Riehl and Shannon Scheer, and obediencejudges Tubby Miller, and Garry and Pauline Baldwin.

Many thanks to our sponsors: the Global Pet Foods stores inCalgary for teaming up to help fund the conformation winner’strip to Crufts; the TD Bank Group for providing money towardsthe obedience winner’s bursary; Canadian Dog Show Fancier(Shawn and Nadine) for designing, printing and shipping theprogram; Dogshow.ca for the jackets each Junior received; DittoCommunications and Cathy French Photography for providingpro-bono professional services to help make the event specialfor each participant; and Purina, Wahl and Hanlder’s Choice forsupplying prizes for the participants.

In her welcome message, AKC President, Wendy Hamilton-Petkau, stated that “Our theme this year is all aboutsportmanship.” For the first time ever, there was a three-way tiefor the Wenrick Sportsmanship Award – including an obediencecompetitor! Congratulations to Thomas Adams, CarolineHolicka and Jessie Powell for sharing this honour.

Lastly, and certainly not least, thank you to the Alberta KennelClub for hosting this year’s Junior Nationals and for itscontinued dedication to hosting one of Canada’s premiereconformation and performance events.

Congratulations to the 2016 National Junior Handling Finalwinners. The CKC and its members are proud of youraccomplishments.

Who We Are The Canadian Kennel Club is a national, member-based, non-profit organization, incorporated underthe Animal Pedigree Act of Canada. It provides registry services for all officially recognized breeds ofpurebred dogs and provides governance for all CKC approved shows, trials and events. Finally, theCKC is a communication organization informing all people interested in dogs.

Mission The Canadian Kennel Club will service its membership and the community at large by givingsupport, understanding, help and guidance in all their canine-related endeavors. CKC will work so thatmembers will be proud of their affiliation. The Club will recognize, promote, and publicize the actionsof responsible breeders and owners.

Vision The Canadian Kennel Club, with its members, will be a dynamic service organization, a recognizedauthority for purebred dogs, and an advocate for all dogs.
