Hey KM Key Clubbers!

Let me introduce myself. Hi, I’m Emily Ly your newly elected club President. You may

recognize me from previous meetings because I have been the club treasurer for the past two

years. Being President is a bit strange for me because going into high school I would have

never thought of running to be a club President, maybe an officer, but not President. I just

always thought I was too awkward and shy. However, look at me now I even have my own

section in a monthly magazine. Key Club changed my life completely, without it I don’t know if

I would be the person I am today. The same could probably go for the attendees of the 65th

Annual PNW District Convention that took place a little over three weeks ago. A weekend full

of innovative speakers and inspiring workshops lit a spark within each and every key clubber in

the audience. Whether it was about performing acts of kindness or fundraising to eliminate

MNT, everybody left the convention with a desire to make a difference. As a club we can

make a difference in our community and in the lives of other people simply by helping out

wherever we can. As of this month, our club has successfully volunteered at the Chambers of

Commerce: Gala and Senior Breakfast. On May 2nd, Key Club will be hosting, with the help of

our sponsor KMPTSA, our annual Staff Appreciation Lunch to thank all K-M teachers for their

hard work throughout the year. We will also be having various other service projects in the

month of May so keep an eye out for any new announcements. I am honestly so excited to

work with all of you for the next couple months and, please, if you have any comments,

suggestions, or concerns feel free to talk to me or message me!

In Love and Service,

Emily Ly

KEY CLUB 101

Key Club international is a student-

led organization that teaches

leadership skills from service to

others in their communities. It is

the oldest and largest service

program for high school students.

Key Club is sponsored by Kiwanis

International.

HOW KEY CLUB WORKS:

1. To develop initiative and leadership.

2. To provide experience in living and

working together.

3. To serve the school and community.

4. To cooperate with the school

principal.

5. To prepare for useful citizenship.

6. To accept and promote the following

ideals:

To give primacy to the human

and spiritual, rather than to the

material values of life.

To encourage the daily living of

the Golden Rule in all human

relationships.

To promote the adoption and

application of higher standards in

scholarship, sportsmanship and

social contacts.

To develop, by precept and

example, a more intelligent,

aggressive, and serviceable

citizenship.

To provide a practical means to

form enduring friendships, to

render unselfish service and to

build better communities.

To cooperate in creating and

maintaining that sound public

opinion and high idealism which

makes possible the increase of

righteousness,

justice, patriotism and goodwill.

Vision:

We are caring and competent servant

leaders transforming communities

worldwide.

Motto:

Caring – Our Way of Life

Pledge:

I pledge, on my honor, to uphold the

Objects of Key Club International; to build

my home, school and community; to serve

my nation and God; and combat all forces

which tend to undermine these

institutions.

In the midst of serene nature and fluctuating weather conditions lies the great

Pacific Northwest District (PNW).The Pacific Northwest is geographically the

largest district of Key Club International. The district spans from Western Canada

to Northern California: with Alaska, Washington, Oregon, and the pan-handle of

Idaho in between. The Pacific Northwest encompasses nearly 1.8 million square

miles and includes over 300 clubs that operate under 44 divisions. Through rain

or shine, snow or hail, Key Clubbers in the Pacific Northwest dedicate countless

hours to their communities and internationally, and are always Proud 'N' Willing

to serve!

ELIMINATE

PACIFIC NORTHWEST DISTRICT PROJECT

What is the ELIMINATE Project?

The Eliminate project is a joint project with

Kiwanis and UNICEF to internationally

terminate MNT.

What is MNT?

In 25 countries around the world, maternal and

neonatal tetanus (MNT) can quickly turn the joy of

childbirth into tragedy. MNT kills one baby every nine

minutes. Its effects are excruciating — tiny newborns

suffer repeated, painful convulsions and extreme

sensitivity to light and touch. There is little hope of

survival. And tetanus kills mothers too.

Who suffers from MNT?

MNT is caused when tetanus spores, found in

soil everywhere, come into contact with open

cuts during childbirth. The disease strikes the

poorest of the poor, the geographically hard

to reach and those without health care.

What can we do?

With just $1.80, you can help

save the lives of a mother and

her newborn child.

MEMBERS OF THE MONTH

GRADUATING YEAR: 2016

FAVORITE TYPE OF FOOD: Thai food

FAVORITE QUOTE: “All the days that you wake up, you get one job, and that’s to get better

every single day.” –Derrick Rose

IF YOU WERE STRANDED ON A DESERTED ISLAND, WOULD YOU RATHER EAT YOUR LEG OR YOUR

ARM?

I would eat my leg because you can still craw with one leg.

IF YOU CAN HAVE ANY SUPERPOWER, WHAT WOULD IT BE AND WHY?

I would want to transport because I get to go to places easier.

WHY DO YOU LOVE KEY CLUB?

I love Key Club because Key Club has given me a whole new experience that I never had.

Whether it's helping someone out or just coming out of my comfort zone. Another reason

why I love Key Club is because it gave me the new friends that I have now, and I get the

opportunity to meet even more people who are caring and kind. Key Club is like another

family to me that's why I love it.

WHY MOLLY?

Molly is a dedicated member to our Key Club. She has almost perfect attendance for the

meetings and volunteers at many events. Molly is also one of the people with the most hours

of this term so far. Way to go Molly!

GRADUATING YEAR: 2014

IF YOU WERE STRANDED ON A DESERTED ISLAND, WOULD YOU RATHER EAT YOUR LEG OR YOUR ARM?

I would rather eat my arms. I can still eat/drink food with my legs, run with my legs from danger, dance

with my legs, and fight with my legs in Judo.

IF YOU CAN HAVE ANY SUPERPOWER, WHAT WOULD IT BE AND WHY?

A superpower that I want to have is teleportation. I can go wherever I want, anywhere at any time. So I

don't have to be late to anything important and its eco-friendly, so I don't have to use any vehicles.

WHY DO YOU LOVE KEY CLUB?

Key Club has been a part of my high school career. The amount of love for this club is like when the

denominator of any fraction is zero. It's undefined. I can explain, but it might turn into a book. The

memories are what I love in Key Club. The memories where I did all those service projects with my

friends, DCON, Key Leader, and developing a strong networking with Key Clubbers from the PNW. Key

Club changed my life by making me become an extrovert leader that cares about the significant

people around me. Just like basketball players say, "Ball is life." What I would say, "Key Club is life."

WHY YEN?

Yen was an outstanding President and Vice President over the years. Even though his term as president

ended, he still continues to come to officer meetings and help out. Yen has such a big heart for Key

Club. He has helped out with countless service projects, and has over 100+ hours of community

service! Great job Yen!

DCON

PACIFIC NORTHWEST 2014 DISTRICT CONVENTION

What is DCON?

DCON is short for District

Convention. Each year, the

Pacific Northwest District gets

together to celebrate the year

of service, elect the new

executive district board, meet

other Key Clubbers in the

area, and learn about new

service opportunities!

The 65th Annual District Convention was

held at the Washington State Convention

Center this year! Kent-Meridian Key Club

worked hard and received four awards. This

includes, the Single Service Award (Gold),

Member Growth Award (Gold),

Distinguished Club Treasurer, and Talent

Show Winners. Emily Ly was awarded the

Distinguished Club Treasurer award

because she attended many Kiwanis

meetings and helped follow up to achieve

timely dues and prepared written financial

reports for our club. Marquel Gapuz, Vidaul

Dent, Jacob Llavore and Austin Elento were

the Talent Show Winners. They performed

an original song, “As of Today” in front of

1800+ Key Clubbers. This year has been a

successful year for Kent-Meridian Key

Clubbers, and we hope to continue this

success!

Say hello to your new 2014-2015 officers!
