Butler currently serves as the Clinical Supervisor of Substance Use Disorders services at Community Counseling Center in Ashtabula.

“I feel that Kent State Ashtabula provided me with many opportunities to expand my horizons and gave me a great foundation on which to build my later educational experiences,” he said. “The faculty are outstanding and helped me see the importance of making an impact on the world – which I now get to do professionally! I wouldn’t be where I am today without having attended Kent State Ashtabula.”

He graduated from Kent State Ashtabula Summa Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Arts (Double Major) in Psychology and Sociology. He then received his Master of Science in Social Administration from the Jack, Joseph and Morton Mandel School of Applied Social Sciences at Case Western Reserve University, from whom he received a Centennial Alumni Award in 2016 and where he now teaches as an Adjunct Instructor and Field Instructor.

The local Region of NASW-OH has presented him with two awards, the Emerging Leader Award in 2014 and Social Worker of the Year in 2017.

Butler has 18 years of professional experience across many social work settings. He has been employed by Community Counseling Center for the past thirteen years. In his current role, he supervises all therapists who provide treatment for substance use and co-occurring disorders, in addition to prevention services. His primary practice interests include the treatment of substance use disorders, stigma reduction, the intersection between the behavioral health and criminal justice systems, and suicide postvention. He is a Licensed Independent Social Worker with Supervision Designation and also a Licensed Independent Chemical Dependency Counselor.

Butler is a member of the Ashtabula County Prevention Coalition, Second Chance Citizen Circle, and the Ashtabula County Suicide Prevention Coalition, in addition to being a founding member of the Ashtabula County Local Outreach to Suicide Survivors and Incident Response Teams. He is the current Board President of the Lake Erie Dog Park Association, as well as sitting on the Board of Directors for the Ashtabula Kiwanis Club. Retiree RecognitionDr. JosephKuvshinikov Associate Professor,Accounting & Business Technology

A fixture on the Ashtabula campus for 23 years, Dr. Joseph Kuvshinikov has been lead faculty for accounting, business and

related technologies. Additionally, he has helped develop curriculum in fraud examinination and entrepreneurial degree track programs.

Most notable among his accomplishments is his work internationally, which included taking a group of Kent State Ashtabula students to Poland in 2013. There the students worked with Lubella Pasta Company as consultants and presented to the organization’s board of directors. Many of his students had not traveled outside the state of Ohio, let alone internationally, prior to what many of them viewed as a life-changing experience. Kuvshinikov has presented at international business conferences in Argentina, Poland, Russia, Uruguay and West Africa.

He is the author of several technical and professional articles and book chapters.

While teaching a number of different subjects, Kuvshinikov was always focused on developing and unveiling leadership in students.

In retirement, Kuvshinikov plans to continue to travel internationally and work on two books focusing on international leadership, trust and cultures.

John StokerAssistant Professor,English

John Stoker, who began teaching on the Ashtabula campus in 1997, is wrapping up a 40-year academic career this spring. During his time here, he taught

mostly composition courses (English I & II) but also American Literature, Literature in English, African-American Literature and Great Books. Stoker also taught at the Kent State Geauga campus and at the University of Akron and Lakeland Community College.

A member of the American Association of University Professors and the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers (ASCAP), Stoker founded the writing center at Kent State Ashtabula and served as its director for 12 years. He also served on numerous committees and panels during his tenure and was twice awarded certificates of special recognition from the Kent State Ashtabula student council. One of his favorite memories of his time on campus was showing the daughter of one of the writing center tutors, to her wonder and delight, Harry Eisenhower’s fanciful animal sculptures in the library.

Outside the classroom, Stoker has performed as a folksinger throughout Northeast Ohio and wrote and released two CDs. In retirement, he plans to spend his time pursing creative endeavors he has long neglected.
