II trust all had a wonderful Easter and enjoyed spring break.
Many of you read last month’snewsletter and based on the feedback weare receiving, many of you are truly excitedabout the various improvements that areunderway around the Club. If you did notget a chance to read the April issue, I urgeyou to go back and take a look.
One project not mentioned was therenovation of the baby pool which is nowunder construction. The baby pool will bereconfigured to incorporate a beach style or“zero” entry feature and will have an
FROM THE PRESIDENT
impressive purple frog slide located withinthe pool, with some small water featuresadded. As a new comfort addition, therewill be an ice and water dispenser locatednear the pool pavilion snack bar, so you canquench your thirst and keep hydrated whileenjoying your time at the pool.
With guarded optimism, the pondproject is still moving along, though, at asnails pace. Montgomery County is takingits time reviewing plans and getting back tous on a couple of issues that need resolvingto the satisfaction of all parties involved.Simply put, that is the main reason it istaking so long to get the permits in hand.
We have received approval for the pondproject through the special exceptionhearing process, and that was one hurdlethat would have stopped the entire project. So, that is great news.
By the time you receive thisnewsletter, I am confident that all will beable to visit the refurbished golf pro-shop,driving range, bag drop and thesurrounding areas to see what has beenchanged and added for greater membersatisfaction.

It is this time of year we employ manypeople, “summer help”, and without theirassistance we could not operate fully for thesummer. I ask you please be patient; theyare here to assist us, and it usually takes aweek or so for them to find their stride andtheir way around the club. Should youencounter any issues, please seek a Manageron Duty to assist you; our regular keypeople will be in place during the summer.

KWGA
By Betty Churchill
AA s we sail into a new golfingseason, with an amazing new team of staff, a refitted
new pro shop (well almost there), a betterpractice range and a bag-drop area in theworks. Our KWGA officers and plannershave planned and innovated an excitingmenu of events for us to participate in. Youhave been receiving breaking flash emailsof all the activities on our schedule and newinnovative events and cooperativearrangements for us to choose from. AnnPelham has created our very own web site, which tells it all – you can check there forany current and future events you need toknow – kenwoodwomensgolf.com!
Get out and get golfing – you can noweven get with one of our pros and find yourown better game again! This will be amemorable season for sure. Along with your2012/2013 KWGA directory and calendarof events, you have the recipe forparticipation and (dare I say – fulfillment). This column will be historical, with resultsand reminders of future events, and yes, some gossipy background of who was seenwhere, doing what in the off season (watchyour tracks as we are on the case).
I must tantalize you with a recipe ofApril events on our calendar – here goes. Our KWGA Opening event on April 11, theMeet and greet day begins with a lightcontinental breakfast, followed by a 9 holescramble playing alongside Lynne Hunterand the two assistant pros – there arefantastic prizes for beating the pro’s shots –and this is breaking news – a light ladiestype lunch – get this vichyssoise soup, chicken salad on greens and fruit , andbrownies as a reward! Our TournamentChair, Carrie Lin and team is the creator ofthis and more exciting formats and events.
Allowing for possible foul April weather, there are open play days too. Our twoDistrict team play ladies will be out there inApril and we wish them all success. We willreport all results of KWGA and extraevents.
Look for the joint KWGA and Ninersmonthly events – this is a great way to meetand engage within both groups – askyourself how many of our KWGA playershave come up through the sytstem to enrichboth organizations. You only have to look atour various team members and follow theirpaths, to see how we benefit bothorganizations. There will be regular jointevents on offer – so visit those possibilitieson offer and join in. Check in with BarbUmbdenstock ([email protected]).
May brings more regular calendarfixtures – a May 2, Mini M/G event, theSolheim Cup event and a Women on theweekend tournament. The MPG Ladies willbe fielding two teams in Division 1 and 2throughout the month. You can follow thoseevents in later newsletters.
A big head’s up for our annual hugeprimary Member/Guest which takes placeon June 6 – be there!
Before we visit the roving spy whofollowed off season events of our offcampus fun golf/travels, I want to recognizeand salute the members of our District andMPG Interclub players who go forth anduphold the reputation of Kenwood Women’sgolf. We were dressed as though going on awinter hike. As the morning progressed andthe sun kept shining, we shed a layer ortwo. Our team scores were a little lowerthan usual this year. On the tenth hole ScottShapin took the best drive from each teamand showed us how to loft it over the treesonto the green. Getting to choose the bestputts from four people, it was an easy parfor my team, perhaps a birdie for someother teams. Lynne Hunter drove a cart onthe course and offered to give each team amulligan. She met up with us on the 14thhole and drove the ball over 220 yards! PamWincup put us on in two and Lucy Kekerputted into the hole for a birdie! Everyoneenjoyed having the pros take part in ouropening day scramble. Thanks Lynne andScott! The winning team was Donna Stern,Liz Harrington, Bonny Loeb, and RebeccaConley. The Second place team was PamWincup, Claire Ames, Lucy Keker, andTheresa McVearry. The prize for closest tothe pin on Hole 13 went to TheresaMcVearry. It is not too early to make plans for theClub Championship Tournaments whichwill be held in June (Men’s Doubles June 2-3 and 9-10 and Ladies Doubles on the samedates, and Mixed Doubles on June 23 and24).
Chris’ Corner When you are having one of those
tennis days when nothing you hit seems togo where it is supposed to, there are severalsteps you can take both physical and mentalto get more control over the match. Takesome deep breaths; go back to basics andconcentrate on the fundamentals of yourstrokes; make sure that you are moving yourfeet so you are well positioned to hit the
ball; get your racquet back early; watch theball until it hits your strings; and stayrelaxed so your body can perform better. Onthe mental side, don’t waste time thinkingnegatively about the match up to now;instead, focus entirely on the upcomingpoints. In doing so, adopt a moreconservative style of play. Increase yourmargin of error both in getting the ball overthe net and in playing farther inside thelines; don’t take low percentage shots; keepthe ball in play and make your opponent hita lot of balls back. Take something off yourfirst serve to get it in more reliably. Beconsistent rather than creative or tricky.Good luck! ★

10 Fitness Tips & Tricks From the Pros1. Remove “weight loss” as an actual goal!
Weight loss is an outcome that cannot happen without action, so your goals need to include specific actions that willlead to weight loss. Goals should be small and attainable, which builds confidence and consistency.
2. Train like the celebrities! What workouts keep celebrities looking good? The workouts are a combination of strength training and cardio, which willwork all the major muscle groups. Follow up with a stretch session to provide relief to the muscles and enhance recovery.
3. Real Improvements – and the antidote to boredom – lie outside your comfort zone.Several pros suggested getting outside of your comfort zone to see results and keep boredom away. Never let yourself getcomfortable in your routine. Mixing up your routine could mean taking a new class or using a new machine. This ‘change-up’ keeps you fresh mentally and physiologically.
4. Ripped abs aren’t made on the floor!Too many people try to get tight abs by doing thousand of crunches on the ground. This tends to actually overwork yourabs. Instead, make sure your core is engaged during your strength, balance and cardio workouts. Core work is less aboutfeeling the burn and more about learning how to move efficiently from the inside out.
5. Incorporate play! Give every workout an element of playing hard (like when you were a kid).Try adding in to your workouts a fun competition, partner drills, cutting-edge equipment and even games or sports.
6. The outside world is your gym. Get outside and use your surroundings to create a workout session. “Cross training with the seasons”– running dirt trails,Nordic and Alpine Skiing, hiking and rock climbing, climbing trees – all ways to use the environment to change upworkouts.
7. Get to know your feet and find balance.Intensity can make you feel alive, but taking some time during the week to stretch and work on balance – without shoes –is just as important. It’s easy to forget about the feet that keep us moving, but growing your posture from you feet canhelp prevent knee, hip, back and even shoulder pain.
8. Welcome massages into your routine.Recovery will help fuel your intense days and ensure your mind is also in tip-top shape, so welcome those massages!Recovery is the name of the game, and massage and bodywork is a sure-fire way to help your body – and your mind –relax and rejuvenate.
9. Forget the reps. Watch the clock.Don’t spend every workout using sets and reps – instead use a stopwatch! Use your stopwatch during high intensityinterval training, which is a great way to increase the intensity of your workouts and see results in a short amount of time.
10. Train and act like an athlete.Incorporate strength, power and conditioning into all your workouts. Training like an athlete also includes getting out ofyour comfort zone and pushing your limits. To act like an athlete, you need to commit!
Commit to be fit, make your health and wellness a priority and don’t accept the “I don’t have any time” excuse!

By Carrie Corey, Spa Director
HH ope everyone is enjoying this spectacular weather. Aswe roll into May I have
thought about the many questions ourmembers have had about the Spa andthought I would share a few with you tohelp each of you better understand how ourspa services might best be utilized.
The following are a few of the mostcommonly asked questions.
Should I work out after my facial, massage, or acupuncture treatment?
Answer – Generally speaking no, it’sbest to allow the treatment some time to doits work. For acupuncture that means a goodtwo hours without vigorous activity,showering/Jacuzzi, or a big meal. After afacial it is best not to shower, swim or sweatright away allowing the skincare products towork their magic.
If you have sought help with an injuryor pattern of muscle tension that might belimiting range of motion, a massage orstretching session prior to activity can bean excellent way to prepare the body foractivity. If unsure whether your plans afteryour trip to the spa might undo thetreatment you just received, just ask yourtherapist for advice.
I don’t have any problems so why do Ineed to use the Spa?
Answer – An old saying immediatelycomes to mind when I hear this statement“an ounce of prevention is worth a pound ofcure”. Actually as much as we enjoyhelping those individuals with urgent issuessuch as a muscle spasm, skin reaction, etc.,it is just as rewarding to help identifypostural patterns, muscle imbalances, orenergetic imbalances that will lead to injuryover time if unaddressed. And who couldn’tuse an opportunity to dial down that stresslevel. Skincare is no different, the sooneryou learn to care for your specific skin typeand utilize sunscreen products, the healthieryour skin will be. We, in each of our areasof expertise, strive to provide the knowledgeof how you can help yourself.
How long should I schedule myappointment for?
Answer – We offer services of varyinglengths of time from a 10 minute waxing toa 2 hour table massage. For Skincare youcan select a 10 minute eyebrow tweeze, a 30minute intensive facial, 45 minutes for ateen facial or a 60 minute signature facial. For acupuncture plan on 45-60 minutes for

the treatment. If you choose massage theamount of time is determined by how muchtime you have and what you are looking toaccomplish during the session. Forindividuals with neck and shoulder tensionon a tight schedule a 10 – 20 minute chairmassage can work well. If you have aparticular area that is bothering you and youare fine with mostly that area receiving theattention, then a 30 or 45 minute tablemassage is a great choice. By far the mostpopular length of time for a massage is anhour. This allows the therapist to addressany specific problem areas while allowingtime for the rest of the body to receive someattention. The 90 minute massage is enoughtime to really get some work done and ourmassage connoisseurs often choose thisoption. Regardless of the length of time youchoose, relaxation is assured.
How often should I come for a massage, facial or acupuncture session?
Answer – Our Massage Therapists,Esthetician and Acupuncturist work withyour individual needs to come up with aplan that will best suit your needs. Facialscan be scheduled every 4-6 weeks or morefrequently if a corrective focused treatmentis being used. Waxing….. well the hair willlet you know. For massage and acupuncturethere are some guidelines that we use tohelp determine the frequency of treatment. For example, the more acute the pain is orthe more recent the injury, the morefrequent the visits might be initially to helpaddress the condition and minimize pain inother areas from compensation. For morechronic pain and ongoing stress, werecommend treatment on a more regularbasis perhaps weekly, bi-weekly, or incombination with other therapies, exercises,or activities. Ideally we want to takeforward steps toward your fitness andwellness goals with a minimum of setbacks. Many clients feel they can increase the time
