II hope all of you had a great Thanksgiving and have a great time through the rest of theholiday season.
As most of the membership knows,Rod Thompson, Golf Professional atKenwood Golf and Country Club, for thepast 34 years, has announced his retirementfrom the Club. Through a job positionposting with the Professional GolfAssociation of America we have received alist of qualified applicants for the Head Proposition. A committee made up of memberrepresentatives, Mary Mayberry, TimMcGarrity, Jill Headley, Mike Urquhart,Bob Ott, Gus Bessalel, Greg Bremer, JohnNunez and Mike Mitchell, has beenworking long hours as they diligently workthrough the selection process. I wish tothank each member of the committee fortheir energy, time, vision and passion while
FROM THE PRESIDENTstriving to find the best and most qualifiedcandidate who encompasses all thequalities we are seeking. As this yearcomes to a close, an announcement will bemade as to the identity of our new Golfprofessional.
The interior of the golf shop is slatedto undergo a major renovation with aredesigned layout to include new servicecounter with new fixtures, furniture andlighting. Work will begin in January 2012,and will take about three and a half monthsto complete.
The Golf Committee has given John, the Golf Course Superintendent, the nod togo ahead and start repairs on the coursebunkers. He will remove the sand, adddrainage and when the temperature is righthe will spread the “Klingstone” and putfresh white sand in the bunkers. John isgoing to get a jump on the work during thewinter so that when springtime comes andthe temps rise the bunkers will be completeand ready for play.
Also, the tree program is now underway for holes 2-8. We now know the bestand most compatible types of trees to beplanted and where they will need to go onthe course. We are holding off on the treeprogram on the clubhouse side of the
course due to the pond project. There willbe too much change to the course as aresult of ponds, and we do not want to haveto repeat any of the tree work.
I am optimistic that the pond project, still under way and in “process” remains ontrack, although a very slow track and I amhopeful to start the enhancements inOctober of 2012.
The new golf logo is going well.Thank you to all the members who took thetime to provide input and drawings; wehave some real artists here at the club.
Another new project under way is thechildren’s outdoor pool area; a “zero entry”baby pool with a frog slide and enhancedwater features. This project is slated to becompleted by the opening of the 2012summer pool season. This will make thebaby pool so much more enjoyable for theparents and the small ones.
I appreciate the feed back we havereceived from the membership on the club’svarious improvements and your forwardvision of Kenwood Country Club. I wish tothank you all for your support in 2011 andyour continued support in 2012.
Happy Holidays with the wish of ahealthy, joyous and peaceful New Year.

And now, on to our pre-New Years Eveevent, I have been privileged to watch manybands/acts over the years at Kenwood, butBryan Clark is just simply the best act Ihave seen. Bryan entertained at a member’sanniversary party several months back, andI, as were others who attended, was justblown away at the vocal talents of this man.He covers everything from Motown toSinatra, smooth, sophisticated and thatvoice…..! New Year’s Eve is one of thoseevenings when most people are torn onwhat to do, family, friends, go downtown, etc., and most end up doing nothing. So wedecided to celebrate the New Year the daybefore, leaving you New Year’s Eve free.We priced this event as inexpensively aspossible, and we are hoping that you allcome out and experience this evening. I canpromise you that you will not want theevening to end! For those who do not careto dance, his act is crafted so that you willhave the same amount of joylistening to him.

OO ur fall practices were a great success, with a regular crew of current and aspiring interclubplayers joining together on Tuesdayafternoons. The kids braved occasionalwind, rain and some colder weather to keeptheir swings grooved, but were rewarded bymany fun afternoons playing with friends, and a special guest competitor for the finaltwo weeks, our own Assistant Pro, SamBoyd.
Thanks to all of the parents who cameout to supervise, especially Cathy
McGarrity, who was a regular fixture eachweek. We’d also like to offer a special nodof appreciation to Sam, whose presence at acouple of practices motivated the juniors toelevate their games in some fun four ballmatches. In one hotly contested match, Samwowed the boys with his monster drivesand chipped in on the 17th hole for birdieto secure a win for himself and his youngpartner.
Stay tuned for information about awinter rules seminar, spring practices and
other special junior golf events in thespring. In the meantime, don’t forget thatthe heated hitting bays are up and available,so no need to let your clubs hibernate forthe winter!
Happy Holidays to all and see younext year. ★

PP ennies from heaven, pioggia, pluie, regen – whatever you call it, we have suffered rainall season long. Of the 22 KWGAtournaments planned for the 2011 season, eight were cancelled due to rain. It may“droppeth as gentle rain”, but it surelycurtailed play. Speaking of water, KenwoodClub is still waiting for the MontgomeryCounty permit to install water features onthe course – if this does not happen byJanuary 1, 2012, the project will not happenin 2012 – stay tuned. This season’s golfevents culminated on October 26 – the dateof the Chairladies Invitational event. Theday dawned bright and dry, but by the timethe 15 or so players were several holesfrom finishing, the “you-know what”started and we were “dewey” by the timewe broke for lunch. It was a fun event, andthe winners were team Mary Mayberry,Dana Peterson, Betty Churchill and ourblind draw Ellen Roche! The second placewinners were Iola Abood, Carolyn Clewell, and Alicia Sosman, and everybody’sfavorite blind draw, Ellen Roche. A jollylunch followed. We closed out the officialseason surrounded by Halloween finery.
We have just held our annual KWGAFall meeting and election of the new slateof officers – that on Wednesday, November9. We voted for our new executive board, and they are the following – Harriet Moss,Chairman; Carrie Lin, 1st Vice Chairmanand Tournament Chairman; Ellen Roche,2nd Vice Chairman and HandicapChairman; Ann Pelham, Treasurer and BarbUmdenstock, Secretary. Well done ladies ofthe retiring board, and good luck and times

to those serving on the new board. Themembership knows that we are in verygood hands! We thanked all the other chairsor reps of the myriad of committees forserving faithfully and well for this year. Wewere reminded of all the functions theyserve and reviewed accomplishmentsrealized in this busy year. The treasurerreported that we have $3000. in ouraccount. We were told of winning events –MD State Golf Association (swept by
Kenwood players); District Play – we have21 qualified players now and will field twoteams of six in 2012. Marilyn Starr willserve as the Vice President of the greaterMPG organization. Ann Nichols, our rep tothe MD State Golf Association, said thatthe Kenwood hosted event was swept byour own players – Monica Hamrick,Marilyn Starr, Teresa Shingler, and EllenRoche. MSGA matters and the completion of ourhandicap allocation project. Our recent pastChairlady, Joyce O’Brien cautioned thenewly elected officers to expect theirhandicaps to crater.
Another important issue which wasbrought up and explained and voted on as itis a change to our general rules. This is achange in eligibility to play in either Nineror KWGA events – that is, a member ofeither group could choose to play(appropriate Handicap needed) in eithergroups Club events. We would retain ourWednesday and Thursday play days. Toplay in both groups events, one must be adues paying member of both groups. Acommittee will be set up to work this out. This was voted on and approved by KWGAmembers present. It is felt that this changewill add to the participation in all events.
Also, most importantly, December 7 isthe date of the fabulous KWGA/NinersHoliday luncheon – be there for noon, inyour seasonal finery. That sort of wraps itup for the year 2011!★

AA few months back I mentioned the passing of a famous Fitness legend,Jack LaLanne. Last month, we lost a localKenwood legend, Mr. Walter Kennevan atthe age of 99. There is not enough room towrite about the exceptional life Mr.Kennevan led, so I am going to focus onjust a few things we can learn from himregarding fitness:
You are never too old to start aFitness Program. Mr. Kennevan came to theFitness Center to improve his walking andfitness at the young age of 94!
You are never too old to see progressin your fitness and well-being. Mr.Kennevan was using a cane and walkerwhen he first started training with Frenchie(one of our Kenwood Personal Trainers). Not only did he get off the cane and walkerbut worked up to doing 30 minutes on therecumbent bike. And it was not just easypedaling but a challenging cross-trainingprogram!
Have people to support your Fitness!Talk to your family and friends about yourFitness Program, so they can encourage
you and keep you motivated. Even betterhave them be your workout buddy andcome to the gym with you! You can alsoturn to our personal trainers for help instructuring your fitness program andkeeping you on the right track to reach yourgoals!
So don’t delay, take some time out ofyour busy day and do something good foryourself and your health! And if you needsome support or a bit more motivation…the staff here at the Fitness Center are justwaiting to assist you in your fitnessjourney! By Carrie Corey, Spa Director
AA s 2011 draws to a close and we ready for what many would describe as thebusiest month of the year, it is importantthat we all just take a deep breath and try tokeep our stress and tension level in amanageable range. It is so easy to getcaught up in the craziness of the holidaysespecially with so many parties, gatherings, outings, family obligations and traditionsthat we feel we must participate in. Mysuggestion is this, have a game plan forhow you can manage things that areimportant for you to do. For those eventsthat you don’t have time for, or are just toomuch for you to manage, let theindividual(s) know that you regret not beingable to attend, but would love to plansomething after the holidays when youhave more time and can really enjoy beingtogether. We are all guilty of overcommitment, and the only one who suffersin the end is us. Even with all we have onour plates, we can still make it a priority totake care of ourselves.
Each year around various holidays, Iremind the Kenwood membership that wehave some wonderful gift giving options forthose family members on your list. Spaservices whether it be a massage, acupuncture, facial or a combination, makes a wonderful gift that allows therecipient to use when they have time or arein need. Gift Certificates for some giftgivers may feel like the easy way out, but Ican tell you from our perspective in the spa,the individuals redeeming the giftcertificates are ALWAYS excited andappreciative of the gift. And after all, whosaid gift giving and showing ourappreciation for our loved ones needs to behard. Since the New Year seems to be atime when we tend to focus on taking bettercare of ourselves, I can think of few thingsbetter than having a massage, acupuncture,or facial where the therapist not only helpsto address current issues but works to help
each individual come up with a plan forbetter self care going forward.
I could be accused of being biasedtoward Kenwood’s Spa as the ultimate giftgiving destination, but I don’t know, shy ofan umbrella drink next to your massagetable located in a private cabaña beach side, that it gets any better!
We will be offering a Winter SpaSpecial which focuses on the two mostimportant areas to help aid in totalrelaxation, the head/neck/shoulders and thefeet. Your foot treatment begins with anexfoliating sugar scrub, followed by amassage and application of Rose Mud fromthe Provence region of France. While yourfeet are enjoying the wonderfullysmoothing and deeply hydrating benefits ofRose Mud, you will be treated to a head, neck and shoulder massage. Upon removalof the mud, your lower legs will receive astimulating circulatory massage with sheabutter to further moisturize your feet. TheOne Hour treatment is $100 and will beavailable during the winter months ofDecember, January and February.
December brings us New Hours forFacials and Waxing. Olena will now beavailable on Sundays only from noon to6pm Sundays for December, January, andFebruary. During December we will also beoffering 20% off all Ageless ImageSkincare products.
We do not keep an extensive inventoryof our skincare products so before you runout call us and leave a message so we canmake sure we have the products on handfor you when you need them.
We hope to lessen the stress of theholidays for you and those you care about, but please remember that when you arescheduling an appointment, we have a 24hour cancellation policy, and all non-members must be accompanied by amember as their guest (applicable guest feeapplies) to the Fitness Center for theirappointment.
We love what we do but we need YOUto come in to enjoy our handiwork. The
FROM THE SPASpa will have events scheduled during theFitness Center’s Member Appreciation Dayin January, but we hope that anytime youhave a question about our services you stopin the Spa, or call us so we can provide youwith the information you need.
Have a safe holiday season and ahealthy and more relaxed 2012! ★
