From Your Potentate

A. Paul Pabón & Lady Karen

Good day Ladies and Nobles, Yes, April was yet another

great month of enjoying serving as your Potentate and First

Lady and representing our Shrine Center. This month started

with Easter Sunday at Virginia City, at St. Paul’s, and

enjoying fellowship with Blue Lodge, York Rite and Scottish

Rite members and their families at Escurial Lodge No. 7. I

can tell you all that my platform of Masonic Unity is taking

hold throughout all of Masonry. I don’t mind saying out loud

Kerak Shrine is leading that charge.

Masonic Unity means so much to your Potentate. As you have heard me state many times, we

have become Masonic Islands in that we have forgotten the strength of Masonry lies in unity.

We need to look beyond our own walls at appendant bodies and tap into talents and resources

which they freely want to give. Masonic Unity, includes all Masonic bodies, which spans from

our youth groups, to our ladies’ groups, to our Blue Lodges, and York and Scottish Rite groups.

Once we realize our strengths lie in our “WE” and not in our “I”, WE will become stronger than

this world has ever witnessed. It can become a reality my Brothers, my Sisters and our youth…

IT CAN.

Then it was off again to attended the Grand Master’s Official Visit

at Escurial Lodge No. 7. Much was spoken about Masonic Unity

only this time with the endorsement of the Grand Master. This is

truly turning into a year of great change, and again, Kerak and its

memberss are in the forefront.

Page 4: KERAK KOURIERkerakshrine.com/images/2018MayKourier.pdf · black mask, a cape, a sombrero cordobes, and wielding a big sword, calling himself Zorro, who greeted all with a flare known

Also, I was so honored to give a 60 year pin, yes I said “sixty

year” pin to Chuck Salsbury, a Masonic member of Escurial

Lodge. That would mean this Brother was a Master Mason

when I was… let’s just say a wee lad.

Next it was off to Elko to attend El-Ko Shrine Club meeting

and support the presentations and partnership between Tele-

medicine and the Shriners Hospital for Children. This is

something every Shriner should get behind and support. After all, it is all about helping our

Shrine Children. Look forward to more on Tele-medicine in the coming months.

Then from the far north end of Nevada to the north end of California to support last year’s

Aahmes First Lady, Sally Williams, being recognized for her project on the BikeFit Exercise

Program. The recognition included a great lunch and tour of our Sacramento Hospital. I must

say everytime I visit the hospital it reaffirms that supporting the Shriners Hospital for Children

is what I wish to do for the rest of my life.

Back to Nevada, for the Kerak Stated meeting, preceded

by a great social hour and dinner. And wouldn’t you

know it, on one of the only occasions I stepped out of the

dining area, in walks a very handsome man wearing a

black mask, a cape, a sombrero cordobes, and wielding a

big sword, calling himself Zorro, who greeted all with a

flare known only to those of Spanish Noble heritage. I

can never catch a break. Zorro was one of my heros

growing up and I missed him in the flesh when he came to visit our Shrine. Karen got a picture

of him to prove to me he was really there… See the First Lady’s story on the following pages…

He sure looks familiar to me.

Also in April, your Potentate visited with numerous Blue Lodges in Northern Nevada

spreading the word of fun and our love for our Shriner Childen. I suspect I will have a few

petitions to turn in by next Stated Meeting as every Freemason gets behind what we have to

offer… A great cause and fun fellowship!

May is already shaping into a great month for Kerak Shriners as many clubs and units swing

into gear for the summer. I look forward to joining the Karavaners on one of their camp-outs,

maybe trying out my new putter with the Golf Club, putting a little mud on the tires with the

Over The Hill Gang or maybe even having a spot of tea with the Moon Shriners, Oh! And let us

not forget the parades coming up. Take a look at the Potentate’s calendar for parades we will be

attending. Nothing says Shriner more than to be in a parade.

Page 5: KERAK KOURIERkerakshrine.com/images/2018MayKourier.pdf · black mask, a cape, a sombrero cordobes, and wielding a big sword, calling himself Zorro, who greeted all with a flare known

I can honestly say being a Shriner has been both the most rewarding and fun experience of my

life… Hope to see you all at our Stated Meeting on May 23rd. Thank you for this opportunity to

serve. Paul

Kerak Shrine First Lady’s Message May 2018

By Lady Karen Pabón

First Lady’s Project – Assistance to the Comprehensive Cerebral Palsy Center Shriners Hospitals for Children, Northern California and Salt Lake City, Utah

April was a great month. “Hello spring and April Showers”; “Welcome May flowers”! We have been just as busy starting the veggie garden at home as we have been for Masonic events. The month started with Knights Templar Easter celebration during services at St. Paul’s Epispicol Church in Virginia City. The services included Bible readings from our Knights and was followed by a potluck at Escurial Lodge #7 for all in attendance. The following week we attended the Grand Master’s Official Visit at Escurial Lodge #7. Next we traveled to attend the El-Ko Shrine Club meeting. There was a terrific dinner and fellowship followed by presentations of partnerships to provide tele-medicine capabilities between Shriners Hospitals for Children, Salt Lake City and clinics in Elko. This will provide much needed additional health care in the populated rural areas of Nevada. We were invited by Jay and Sally Williams to attend a luncheon at the Northern California Hospital. The lunch was coordinated by personnel who work with the motion lab. Last year, as First Lady of Aahmes Shrine in Livermore, California, Sally raised funds for the BikeFit Exercise Program (contact Sally for more information on this program). Attending this luncheon was a good fit since this personnel usually treat cerebral palsy patients. We had great discussions with the doctors and staff. We saw all the bikes waiting for the next session. We had a very detailed visit with the motion lab staff who showed us many of the tools and computer programs they use to help decide the correct course of action to take on each patient. Then, what can we say about April’s Stated Meeting? The evening started with fellowship, drinks and dinner. (By the way, please be sure to call in your reservation to the Shrine Center each month.)

Then a visit from El Zorro. Who knew El Zorro was so funny… and handsome? Next, the motion lab personnel from the Northern California Hospital made a presentation about the work being done in treatment and reasearch to help cerebral palsy patients. They described the process a child and family go through when they arrive at the hospital. This is the program the First Lady’s Project supports. I thank you for all of your support and donations. Each of you are so much appreciated.

After this presentation, everyone was invited to the meeting room to enjoy a public show of the Mt. Rose Rainbow Girls Ribbon Ceremony. The Girls rushed to change into pretty dresses and present their ceremony that describes the circle and colors of the rainbow of various Masonic bodies.

Page 12: KERAK KOURIERkerakshrine.com/images/2018MayKourier.pdf · black mask, a cape, a sombrero cordobes, and wielding a big sword, calling himself Zorro, who greeted all with a flare known

While the Nobles attended their meeting, the Ladies made fleece blankets to take to the hospital. It is so much fun to work on a project and share stories!

There are a few Shriner neck ties for $20 donations and Shrine Lady bracelets for $10 donations to the First Lady’s Project available. Get yours before they are gone! Upcoming events to support the First Lady Project include the Kerek Shrine Car Show on July 7. Also, mark your calendars for the murder mystery dinner on July 25, 2018 and a fun day (likely wine and painting) for all on August 26, 2018. The fundraiser at the May meeting will be an “Attitool” and “Pursenality” (you know, like Attitude and Personality ) silent auction. There will be toolboxes and purses up for auction. I hope you

can all come and enjoy this fun evening.

Kerak Shrine Golf Club

A Social Club That Plays Golf

Into our second month of the 2018 golf season with a breakfast meeting at the Eagle Valley club house.

Thursday, April 12th, was a rather chilly and windy day, but the 12 club members braved the elements and had

fun with a golf tournament on the East course. Winner was Joe Crowdis with a net 67 followed by Ed Smith,

Jim Walsh and Todd Williams. Closest-to-the-Hole winners were John Reed and Mike Healey.

The Club would like to thank Joe and Carolynn Crowdis for hosting a party after play at their home. It was

their 54th wedding anniversary complete with food and champagne.

On Thursday, April 19th, our official monthly tournament was played at Wolf Run, again on a not-so-perfect

weather day for golf, but on a golf course in great shape. The 12 players, including Todd’s guest, Tony Lee, had

a challenging day with Arnold Etcheberry winning the tournament. Jim Walsh, John Reed and Bob Yturiaga

were in the next three places, with Jim Walsh and Todd Williams getting Closest-to-the-Hole honors.

At the meeting John again emphasized bringing a guest to the tournaments (one point) and that the Club

website has changed (see below). Check it out.
