In 2012, we will complete a collaboratively developed Monument Management Plan at the Giant Sequoia National Monument. This Plan will have an ecological restoration theme to counteract the effects of fire suppression and logging. It will also provide for visitor enjoyment and understanding in ways to protect the very objects President Obama so keenly iden- tified needing protection. I am also struck by the tremendous opportunities that abound outside the Monument: developed and dis- persed recreation; wildlife and fish habitat restoration; restoring the effects of fire sup- pression; the identification, protection, and interpretation of our cultural resources; and the need to maintain a viable vegetation man- agement program as a tool for ecological restoration. When I think about decisions we make in the short or long term, I frame my thinking around three elements. First and foremost, is the natural resource itself. I want to make sure we are making a difference on the ground. Second is connecting with the employees that accomplish the very things that make the Sequoia the successful Forest it is. And third, the reason we exist is you, the very people who so passionately care about and use this tremendous resource. The Sequoia has a reputation for being responsive to people’s needs and providing for multiple-uses in a manner that demon- strates good land stewardship. Natural resource management is not without controversy. There are many public interests, and often they are in conflict with each other. Not every- one likes what we are doing and that is okay. This time ofyear I get theChristmas spiritand like to thinkback to the firstChristmases that Ican remember.

Those would bethe ones I spent atBig Bear Lakewhen I was livingwith my GrandmaNonna and Grandpa Dodda (when Iwas 5 to 9 years old).

I remember going into the forestand cutting down our own tree. Iwould help saw it down (under thewatchful eye of Grandma Nonna). She would also collect fir boughs tomake wreaths for gifts.

We usually had a thermos of hotchocolate which always tasted ohso good!

We would take the tree homeand Grandpa Dodda would make astand and we would put the tree inthe living room just to the right ofthe fireplace. It brightened thehouse and we’d notice how good itsmelled.

Nonna showed me how to maketree decorations. She gave me aneedle and thread, and I strungpopcorn until I had a garland sever-al feet long which I placed aroundthe tree.

I also took magazine pageswhich had lots of colored ads andwould cut them in strips that Iglued in a circle around another cir-cle and so on, making a colorful

paper chain to be placed on the tree. Then, reaching as high as I could,

I helped hang the glass ornamentsand lots of tinfoil icicles.

About then, Dodda would hoistme high in the air and let me put theangel on the very top of the tree.

One year I received a present of atoy train that had Mickey Mouseand Donald Duck riding on a flat carcircling the tree. Of course, afterChristmas, I had that train runningall through the house. And accord-ing to Nonna, “always under foot!”

We lived some distance from ournearest neighbors, the Sturtevants, but during the holiday season wewould hike through the snow totake them cookies that Nonnamade. While we were there, we hadcider, and while Mrs. Sturtevantplayed the piano, we sangChristmas Carols and munched oncookies.

Later, each of us had to say aChristmas prayer (even me). Theyalways had a present for me too.Usually it was something home-made like the time I got knittedwool socks. (which I didn't like, hadto wear, and lasted forever).

Later we would go home acrossthe snow-covered field and some-times the moon was shining sobright, we didn’t need a flashlight.

It was a great time to be a boy liv-ing with folks who shared their loveand spirit of Christmas with me.

PICKS OF THE WEEK“Brighton Rock” — A hand-

some hoodlum murders a man atthe Brighton Boardwalk, and theonly loose end is a pretty youngwitnessing waitress who says shenever forgets a face. Pinkie (SamRiley) then seduces the naive Rose(Andrea Riseborough), figuringthat even if he has to murder ormarry her, it beats getting thedeath penalty in the last yearbefore it’s outlawed.

What follows is a smoldering —if a little slow and melodramatic —story of a good Catholic girl whofalls hard for the wrong bad boy.Riley’s brooding Brit feels a littletoo one-sided. He knows whatgame he’s playing and doesn’tseem all that conflicted about it.The themes from the source novelby Graham Greene are well-pre-served, and that adds the necessaryweight to the story. Is Rose’s faith-ful nature her secret strength, or isit leading her to the slaughter?

“Apollo 18” — It’s found-footagemadness from the dark side of themoon! It turns out that there wasone more top-secret moon missionin 1974, and the classified footagecollected by the astronauts tells thereal story of why we never wentback. Budgetary concerns and shift-ing policies had little to do with it —creepy crawlies hiding under moonrocks is what scared mankind awayfrom our greatest symbolic achieve-ment.

All the parts are in place — isola-tion, unfamiliar terrain, claustropho-bic settings and a premise that sus-pends enough disbelief — but thesecond-phase rockets never kick in,so this not-so-scary dud nevermakes it into orbit. What’s missingfrom the mission checklist is sus-pense, characters we care about, sufficient thrills and a script. Thisone shoots for the moon and some-how lands among the “Blair Witch”sequels.

“Final Destination 5” — Like somany decent horror franchisesbefore it, “Final Destination”embraces repetition, and it works.Once again, a lone nobody gets aclairvoyant glimpse of massive freakaccident (this time it’s a bridge col-lapse) just in time to save a few peo-ple, forming a diverse cast of folkswho will die one by one in theirown, personalized freak accidents. No monster, no psychopath, just theraw malice of fate and gruesomeoccupational hazards.

Mike MencariniKern River Courier columnist

As Christmasquicklyapproaches --with the shop-ping and the dec-orating andcleaning to do --thoughts ofgoing fishing areput on the backburner. Thisleaves me a littleshort on information, probablyfor the next couple of issues.

The Fish and Game websiteshows only the Bakersfield lakesand Brite Lake in Tehachapi beingstocked this week.

The bass fishermen who havebraved the weather conditionsare catching and releasing somenice largemouths. Most of thesefish were reported to be in thesix- to nine-pound class. The toss-ing of medium to large jigs seemsto be the ticket. The crappie thisyear are very nice but a lot harder

to catch and fewer in numbers. For you shore anglers, Boulder

Gulch, B.S. Beach and Tillie Creekareas are good places to catchrainbows. Garlic, rainbow, andegg-scented Power Bait work well.

I have been asked what thedeal with the crappie is. This isonly my best guess, but I believethe loss of habitat could be a rea-son. With the lake now being 58years old, a lot of the standingtimber has rotted and eitherwashed over or just fallen down.

During a walk around the lakein the South Fork, I saw a ton ofsmall to medium cottonwood treehulks hugging the last high watermark. This loss of structure yearafter year has to have an effect onschool fish that depend on thistype of cover.

Wood is agreat renewableheating option. Itis widely availableand clean burning(in EPA-certifiedstoves).

But for some ofus, handling thefirewood andtending the firerequire toomuch time. If a wood stove isn’tright for you, you might want tocheck out pellet stoves, whichburn pellets made of compressedwood by-products and other bio-mass. Easy to run, a pellet stovecan run for more than a day andkeep the temperature controlledby a thermostat. Google “turnwaste wood into home heat: buy apellet stove” for a great detailedarticle http://goo.gl/ 6x0sb.

Another reason to considerswitching from fossil-fueled heatsources to a pellet stove: it canreduce your carbon footprint.Wood pellets produce almost nonet climate-changing carbon diox-ide if they are used as fuel(although some fossil fuels typical-ly are used in the manufactureand transportation of pellets).

When I moved to the KernRiver Valley in 2004, my housewas heated by 220v electric resist-ance wall heaters and had two

hearths, one for a wood -burningstove and one for a propanestove.

I put in a fancy Canadian pelletstove (enviro.com) I bought on-line. These stoves are now avail-able locally. If I were buying a pel-let stove now, I suspect I’d opt foran American-made stove. If youbuy/install one before Jan. 1, 2012,you might get a $300 federalincome tax credit. The tax credit is10 percent (up to $300) for thepurchase and installation of a 75percent efficient heating appliancein 2011 (see http://goo.gl/xemje).

One drawback of a pellet stoveis that they need electricity to run(fans, feeder mechanisms). So,when the power goes out, thestove stops working and can leaksmoke into your house. So, Iadded an efficient Lennox wood-burning stove I bought on close-out sale from Fireside Stoves onLake Isabella Blvd.

In winter, I alternate betweenthe wood stove and pellet stove. Iuse mica-panel electric heaters forspot heating in my bathroom andcomputer/TV room. And I use anelectric mattress pad heater towarm up my bed before my dog-gies and I retire for a good win-ter’s night sleep.
