It wasn't untilyesterday that Inoticed some-thing specialhad happenedin my everydaylife.

It occurredwhen I pulledup to the gaspump at mylocal station. I approached, asalways, thinking to myself,“Which side of my car is thegas tank opening on?” That wayI would know which side of thepump I would need to drivetoward.

I have three vehicles. Two ofthem have gas tank openingson the left and one has anopening on the right. So eachgas station visit, depending onwhich vehicle I am driving, requires my attention to get itright or I could end up with ahose too short to reach thefiller.

I was always getting itwrong. I usually didn't find outmy error until I had gotten outof the vehicle and discovered Iwas on the on the side oppositeof where I needed to be.

All of my vehicle gas tankdoors are smooth with no pro-jections or hinges, so evenusing my mirrors I still couldn'ttell from inside my vehicleswhich side had the opening. Ishould add that at my age, my

memory is a little bit south ofnorth. As an example – I onlyoccasionally drive my big truckand I can never remember itsfiller location. Getting in andout of the truck isn't the easiesttrick in the world. I love drivingit, because I sit so high and cansee so well. However, climbinginto the cab is a mountaineer-ing feat, so I don't like doing ittwo or three times at every gasstation while I’m lining up atthe right pump.

But I digress. On this particu-lar day, as I searched my braintrying to remember which vehi-cle I was in and where the fillerdoor was, I suddenly realizedthat with the trade-in and mymost recent purchase of a newcar, all of my gas tank openingson all my vehicles were now onthe left side! That means that nolonger must I wrack my brainfor a decision.

Thusly, all I have to do iskeep the gas pumps to my leftand Eureka! I will always bewhere I should be. What a greatday.

Postscript. On the new carthe electric release buttons forthe trunk and the gas coversare next to each other on thedoor. Guess what?

Previews of new DVDs by DNA Smith

Released the week of Sept. 14:

PICKS OF THE WEEKYeah, I'll be taking this week off

from work. Three of my favorite TVshows are coming out on DVD thisweek, so I'll be holed up in TheFortress of Bad Posturewith crates of snackytreats, fizzy fluids and mythumb on the speed-dialto my local Chinese take-out, while I endure athree-season marathon.

"The Big BangTheory: The CompleteSecond Season" -- Theongoing saga of TV'smost hilarious geeks con-tinues. While Season 1devoted itself to mostlystand-alone episodes thatdid a great job of intro-ducing the characters ofLeonard, Sheldon, Wolowitz,Koothrappali and Penny, Season 2devotes itself to longer, multi-episode story arcs that do an amaz-ing job of fleshing out the charac-ters and making them more thansimply stereotypical, one-dimen-sional jokes.

Leonard and Penny's relationshipcontinues to be on and off, as bothof them find (and break up with) dif-ferent people; Wolowitz hooks up --somehow -- with Leslie Winkle; andSheldon gets the coolest Christmasgift ever: Leonard Nimoy's DNA.The DVD set has a few extras:Commentary tracks on eachepisode, a gag reel and a fewbehind-the-scenes shorts.

"The IT Crowd: The Complete

Couch Theater‘Big Bang’ season 2 out soon

By Cindy Elavsky

Q: I really liked the "Life onMars" drama that was on ABCthis past season. My friend toldme that the show was based ona U.K. series. If so, where can Isee episodes of that version? --Jonathan D., via e-mail

A: Unfortunately, "Life on Mars"did not quite catch on with Americanaudiences like the British version hasin the U.K. The time-travel policedrama aired for two seasons on BBCOne and BBC America, and "Life onMars, Series 1" was recently madeavailable on DVD.

To be quite honest, I likethe U.K. version betterthan the American. JohnSimm and Philip Glenister-- who play Sam Tyler andGene Hunt, respectively --have remarkable chem-istry, and the show itself isa fresh idea with a greatmix of drama and wit. Thefour-disc DVD set is avail-able at most retail stores,as well as online outletssuch as amazon.com.

***Q: I was shocked to hear

about the passing ofwriter/director John Hughes. How are his Hollywood friendsdealing with the news? -- GinnieF., Duluth, Minn.

A: I recently had the chance tocatch up with Joan Cusack, whostars in the new Lifetime Televisionmovie "Acceptance." Joan got herbig break in the ultimate teen flick,"Sixteen Candles," when she wasjust 21 years old. She was as sur-prised and as saddened as we allwere to hear that John Hughes haddied.

She recalls: "If he hadn't lived in

Chicago and been making teenmovies when I was a teenager, I'dnever be in this business, ever. There's just no way. John Hughescame along, and I got into a little partin the film ('Sixteen Candles') and gota break. I feel like I owe everything tohim. John was such an empoweringpresence. He said that teenagers arealive and thinking and feeling anddoing all sorts of interesting things."To read the interview in its entirety,go to www.celebrityextraonline.comand click on "Interviews."

***Q: I am so psyched for the

new Fox show "Glee" to startthis fall. I am won-dering if we'll get thechance to hear themultitalented JaneLynch sing. She wasa wonderful singerin "A Mighty Wind."-- Paul M. in NewJersey

A: While there are noimmediate plans for Ms.Lynch to wow us withher vocal chops, she isslated to dance theLindy Hop with co-starMatthew Morrison in

one of the first few episodes. I havethe feeling that the writers will useher vocal talents someday soon. Janetold me during an interview a fewyears back that her ideal role wouldinvolve singing, and she confided, "Ifsomeone handed me a script where Igot to sing, and it was funny, movingand smart, I'd do it in a second!"

Clarence Semonious, pastorPrince of Peace Lutheran Fellowship, Kernville

Jesus, talking before theadvent of our modern eco-nomics, advised “Takecare, and be on your guardagainst all covetousness, for one's life does not con-sist in the abundance of hispossessions.” Luke 12:15. Ihesitate to continuebecause He then explainedabout the problems of aparticular rich man. Centerattention on both thewealthy and the poor; the love of eitherthings or power is a direct line to anxiety.God looks at the desires of the heart. Isaiahwrote, “Say to those who have an anxiousheart, "Be strong; fear not! Behold, your Godwill come with vengeance, with the recom-pense of God.” (35:4). Regarding vengeance,God had said, “Vengeance is mine, and rec-ompense, for the time when their foot shallslip; for the day of their calamity is at hand, and their doom comes swiftly.” Deuteronomy32:35. Regarding recompense, understandrepayment; reimbursement; or compensationfor a loss.

Call it fearful, fretful, or concerned, bothsupplier and consumer are addressed withinGod’s economics. The supplier has the samefears and concerns as the consumer. Godblesses both. The consumer and the suppliershare the same temptation – to seek posses-sions and power. God has promisedvengeance and recompense to both. The epis-

tle of James teaches, “My brothers, show nopartiality as you hold the faith in our LordJesus Christ, the Lord of glory.” James 2:1.

Look up the phrase, “business is business,”in scripture. I looked in five translations withthe same results; “not found.” What one willfind is, “For if a man wearing a gold ring andfine clothing comes into your assembly, and apoor man in shabby clothing also comes in,and if you pay attention to the one whowears the fine clothing and say, ‘You sit herein a good place,’ while you say to the poorman, ‘You stand over there,’ or, ‘Sit down atmy feet,’ have you not then made distinctionsamong yourselves and become judges withevil thoughts?” James 2:2-4. These are notrules for ushering, but self-testing for one’sheart. “If you really fulfill the royal lawaccording to the Scripture, "You shall loveyour neighbor as yourself," you are doingwell.” James 2:8.

We are told, “…the desires of the flesh areagainst the Spirit, and the desires of theSpirit are against the flesh, for these areopposed to each other, to keep you fromdoing the things you want to do.” Galatians5:17. After listing eleven things to avoid, a listof the fruits of the Spirit, “…love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such thingsthere is no law.” Galatians 5:22-23. TrustGod’s promise in Matthew 6:9-13. “OurFather in heaven, hallowed be your name.Your kingdom come, your will be done, onearth as it is in heaven. Give us this day ourdaily bread, and forgive us our debts, as wealso have forgiven our debtors. And lead usnot into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

Harry P. ThalKern River Courier Columnist

The article Iwrote three weeksago has causedsome readers torespond to me inthe form of e-mails.(Being out of town,I haven't seen themail from the postoffice as yet. ) Theresponses I havereceived from my article concerningHR 3200, the health care legislationcurrently before Congress, are verymixed. The more conservative andmoderate readers favor my com-ments, while those who tend more tothe political left feel my analysis isinaccurate. I guess we will have toagree to disagree.

***

Our cabin in the woods has nocell phone, telephone, Internet nortelevision. So, we brought our ownTV/DVD player and have beenwatching the mini-series "JohnAdams." This dramatization ofAmerica's fight for independenceand the early struggles of our coun-try bring to light the basic founda-tion that America was built upon –freedom to choose, and a govern-ment by the people and for the peo-ple. I truly believe that our represen-tatives in Washington, DC need toreview what our founding fathersstood for.

Our country has come a very longway since the 1700s. The moviedramatized this by showing howThomas Jefferson lost his wife andchild to diphtheria.

Today, the cost of a physician hasrisen beyond a few pence or a chick-en. Many Americans cannot afford

the cost of health care at the levelavailable to the more affluent.

In this 21st Century, our govern-ment has taken on a role as caretak-er for America. While there is aneed to provide health service andbenefits to all, in my opinion, there isno need to create “one size fits all”plans. Granted, some people needmore help than others, but I person-ally believe that our founding fathersdid not intend for government todictate to those who can help them-selves. I commend and encouragelegislation that expands benefits toall Americans. Some of my readerscommented that this would be sounder the proposed legislation. Isuggest they read the bill, and notthe analysis by special interestgroups.

***I shall be back in the office in a

few days. I will begin preparationfor the Medicare open enrollmentthat starts Nov. 15. It takes severalmonths to get certified with all thehealth plans that will be available in2010.

To the reader who commentedabout my "self interest" in seeing thelegislation defeated, all I can say isthat the current MedicareAdvantage commission schedule isno reason to keep me employed.

If the legislation were to pass, allAmericans would be required tohave insurance, and I would be verybusy accommodating them.

According to the Wall StreetJournal, doctors are turning away62% of patients at OneWorld HealthCenters in Omaha. They’re unin-sured. Doctors are turning away 500patients a month. They’re losinghealth cover-age during thisrecession.

The clinicsin Omaha can’tafford enoughdentists.Doctors arecalling infavors to friendswho are special-ists to performprocedures such as treatments forwomen who show signs of develop-ing cervical cancer. “I think we’reeven seeing the tip of the iceberg interms of who we turn away,” saidone executive. “We really wantsome kind of reform.” Meanwhile, inNebraska, Senator Nelson is encour-aged that lawmakers could passsome of the less controversialaspects of the health overhaul, suchas increasing funding for preventioninitiatives and training more nursesand doctors. But he thinks the heartof the legislation, a governmentexpansion to cover the uninsured, will be more difficult to pass than hehas anticipated.

He also concedes that Democratsfailed to win the support of peoplewho already have insurance by not

convincing them the plan wouldlower their health costs.

Speak for yourself, SenatorNelson and all you fat cats who can’tgive up a few dollars to help out oth-ers less fortunate than yourself.

***I’ve spent the last few days watch-

ing the next saga in the Kennedysaga as it unfolded on TV. Talk aboutfamilies that have had their fairshare of “sturm and drang.” I cameto California in 1960 and havewatched the fortunes of theKennedys rise and fall ever since. Ireally felt badly when Jack Kennedywas assassinated and even more sowhen Robert Kennedy was later alsoassassinated.

And now the untimely death ofTed Kennedy. Well, the three of themare finally united at ArlingtonCemetery.

Ted Kennedy did noble work inthe last years of his life. Did his workpay off? Well, we’ll just have to waitand see if there’s a future payoff. This health care bill was going to behis big payoff for 47 years of dedica-tion to the public good.

But he did receive a grand send-off for his next great adventure!

Our Valley, Our Earth

California sites prominentRon BolyardKern River Courier Columnist

Continuingfrom last week.

It is veryimportant thatthe readerunderstand thesignificance oflast week’s dia-gram, especiallythe node ofbasement rockthat juts south-westward into present dayCalifornia. This node, which ispartly in Death Valley and partlyexposed throughout the easternMojave Desert of southeasternCalifornia, is made up of rocksthat were the original exposedrocks 2 to 2.3 billion years ago. These rocks can beviewed today inthe "Turtleback"formations atBadwater,Morman Point,Copper Canyonand other loca-tions in the Black Mountains ofDeath Valley National Park.Incidentally, the rocks are verydark, ultra-mafic type rocks, thusthe name Black Mountains.

The Badwater Turtleback isespecially prominent. AtBadwater, the highway widensinto a parking area for viewingthe panorama westward acrossthe valley "pan" to the PanamintMountains and Telescope Peak.

The very close, vertical mountainface to the east is the BadwaterTurtleback (with the Sea Levelsign on it). The rocks making upthis vertical wall are some of theoldest rocks found on earth, approx. 2 billion years old ormore.

To a geologist, this site is verysignificant to the understandingof the overall genesis of theNorth American continent andits relationship with the remain-der of this planet.

The Badwater site offers othergeological evidence that a non-geologist would appreciate ifthey knew what they were look-ing at! Grab your geological dic-tionaries and I will list a few.

There are Slickinsides; Ultra-mafic rocks; very hard and com-petent metamorphic and igneous

rocks; and salt panjust to name a few.Did you find thedefinitions? Goodwork! You nowhave a much bet-ter understandingof the significance

of these features.I will continue next week with

a similar diagram that shows theNorth American continent some1.5 billion years later!

Until next week...

Ron Bolyard is a retired geolo-gist and has developed an “acuteinterest” in the geology of thesouthern Sierra Nevada since hemoved here in 1999.

Have you ever thought youmay wish to paint and thenfound all kinds of excuses tonot? New territory can bescary. You maythink youhaven’t any tal-ent, or don’tknow where tobegin. Severalrequests haveencouraged meto offer anopportunity tothe communityto take a begin-ning painting class while keep-ing down the cost.

All painters will be welcomeand there will be plenty ofindividual attention to goaround. Beginners will learn, step by step, how to take ablank canvas and a few sup-plies and complete a work ofart. Learn a simple grid toadjust the size of your chosensubject to a different size can-vas. (You don’t even need anydrawing experience!) Discoverproper perspectives. Becomefamiliar with various brushtypes and techniques to getdesired effects. Find out aboutcolor relationships, how to mixcolors both on a palette and onyour painting; blending, too.Develop an underpainting andlearn to build a painting fromstart to finish. And voila – you

become a painter. Find yourpace and style.

Evening class will be avail-able Mondays at 5:30 at thebeautiful, inspirational IndianCultural Center for those ofyou who work, yet hunger tocreate. If response demands adaytime class, then we willchoose a day and start a sec-ond class. Each class will becomprised of six weekly ses-sions.

Acrylics, a wonderful begin-ning medium, are my choicefor this class. It dries fast, allowing you to move rightalong, the color is vibrant, they can be less expensivethan other mediums, no odorsto contend with, but best of allis it is a forgiving medium.

If you wish to work with“water-soluble” oils, that’s finetoo. It does not need to beexpensive to get started. Fivecolors, a few brushes, aneasel, and a canvas get youstarted.

My hope is to see you blos-som, grow in confidence andhave a lot of fun. $20 per ses-sion should make art lessonsaffordable and available tothose who otherwise might notbe able to take a class. Giveme a call at (760) 378-1090.

All of us have heard the statis-tics time and time again. "TheInternet is the key to selling yourhouse." "87% of all real estatesales originateon the Internet.""Most peoplewho look on theinternet forhomes find theiragent on theinternet as well."The list goes onand on concern-ing how impor-tant the Internetis when it comes to buying orselling a house. And it is true, allof the statistics are true and mostpeople dooriginatetheirsearch forpropertyonline.

Sohere is thecatch ifyou aretrying tobuy or sella home. Isthe agent you are using maximiz-ing the Internet? Most real estateagents have some kind ofInternet presence, be it an e-mailaccount or even a Web site. Veryfew really know what they aredoing. Just having a Web site

that has a list of homes for saledoes not mean that you are usingthe Internet as the huge salestool that it is.

Here is the key with theInternet: does the Web site havewhat people are looking for?Simple as that. If a Realtor has anInternet site that does not quicklysolve the buyer's immediatewants and needs in terms ofwhat they are looking for on thenet, that Web site is useless. Ifthat Web site cannot be found inthe three main search engines inthis country (which are Google,Yahoo and MSN), that Web siteis useless.

So when hiring an agent, make sure they are not just onthe net, make sure they are reallymaximizing the Internet. The

good onesdo, becausethey knowit helpsthem earn aliving, andmost of allit helpsyou, theclient, getwhat youneed andthat is the

most important thing.

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) It might not be wiseto pursue goals involving others, unless you can stopimpulsively rejecting new ideas. Either open yourmind or wait until next week, when this "ornery"mood passes.

TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) It's a good time forthe Bovine to be creative and practical for yourself andyour surroundings. Shop wisely, not impulsively, andkeep your Bull's eye focused on quality, not quantity.

GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) You should feel moreconfident about moving ahead with plans that had tobe delayed by an unexpected turn of events. Also, fam-ily matters might need more time than first anticipated.

CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Be considerate of oth-ers as you move into a new area in your professionallife. Take time to meet people and discuss mutual goals.

LEO (July 23 to August 22) Creating a fuss couldget your ideas noticed quickly. But it would be best topresent your case, and then wait for a reaction to fol-low in due course, rather than try to force it to happen.

VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Unkeptpromises might cause plans to go awry this week. Youcan either grumble about people "letting you down"or find a way to make the best of it and move on. Thechoice is yours.

LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Putting off

making a commitment early in the week could be agood move. Best to act when you know you're mak-ing an informed decision. Expect more facts toemerge by the week's end.

SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) A recentact of kindness on your part could take on special mean-ing this week. Also, look for signs of upcoming changesin your personal and professional relationships.

SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21)Many of the tougher communication barriersbetween you and others in the workplace or at homecould begin breaking down this week. Expect somesurprises to emerge.

CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Your"tough love" attitude toward someone you care forcould be misunderstood. Try to be less judgmentaland show more consideration.

AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) An unex-pected workplace challenge could be daunting. Buttake what you know (and you know more than yourealize) and apply it to the problem, and you shouldsee positive results.

PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Recent relation-ship changes for both single and paired Pisces contin-ue to influence much of your week. Keep your focuson developing the positive aspects as you move along.

BORN THIS WEEK: You set your goals withassurance and influence others to follow suit. Youwould be an excellent philosopher and teacher.
