HAIRDRESSING COURSE (ETK58)

IntroductionAre you a creative person with a flair for working with your hands and an eye for style, colour and fashion? If so, have you considered a career in hairdressing? If you also enjoy working with others and dealing with the general public this may be the career and course for you. This course offers participants the opportunity to develop the knowledge and skills to cut, shampoo, condition, pin curl, finger wave, blow dry, set, style, perm and colour hair. They will also learn many of the other competencies required in commercial hair salon work. The learning outcomes are firmly focused on enabling participants to gain employment in the hairdressing sector.

What you’ll study – Course Modules:• Induction - State the planned outcomes and conditions attached

to the course; apply good safety, health and hygiene practices; state the basic principles involved in environmental issues; and explain the meaning of equal opportunities.

• Hairdressing Theory and Practice - 5N3345. Provide effective salon services within a work environment, operating independently while under general supervision.

• Hairdressing Science - 5N3346. Apply a knowledge of the scientific principles underlying hairdressing so as to develop safe and hygienic salon work practices.

• Creative Styling - 5N3349. Provide an upstyle, wig, hairpiece or hair extension service for a client using relevant equipment and styling products.

• Barbering Techniques - 5N3348. Use various barbering techniques, tools and equipment to create men’s hairstyles.

• Safety and Health at Work - 5N1794. Describe the requirements relevant to safety & health at work. Explain the regulations, including Acts, legislation and responsibilities. Describe the role of the H&S Authority and the need for personal safety & health awareness. Identify and complete documentation relating to safety & health at work. Identify risks and hazards in the control of infection & contamination. Describe first aid, safety & fire awareness, manual handling, VDUs, workstations & signage. Demonstrate practical activities relating to the promotion of safety and health at work.

• Customer Service - 5N0972. Provide effective customer service within a range of environments.

• Career Planning and Work Experience - 5N1356. Participate in the workplace for a limited time carrying out work-related tasks independently while under general direction.

Certification. • FETAC Level 5 Major Award in Hairdressing (5M3351). Participants must pass the module assessments for each of the above

modules in order to achieve the FETAC Level 5 Major Award.

Course Delivery Methods.A combination of training methods is used to deliver this course.

This includes practical demonstrations, tutorials, supervised

practice, simulated work environment practice, practical

workplace training and role playing. On average, the course

is made up of 4 days practical and 1 day of classroom based

training per week. Participants are required to actively participate

in the learning process and to engage in course work outside of

normal course hours. They must complete a number of written

exercises and assignments throughout the course. Assessment

methods include practical exams, written assignments, portfolios

and theory exams.

Entry Requirements.• Reached the statutory school leaving age.

• FETAC Level 4 Major Award or equivalent. A science subject at Junior Cert level or equivalent is recommended.

• Demonstrate evidence of an interest in and knowledge of the industry.

• Good hand-eye co-ordination and good finger dexterity, i.e. the ability to use hairdressing tools and equipment safely when working on customers’ hair.

• Ability to identify basic shapes and to visualise the end result of a hairstyle.

• Excellent colour vision – Must pass the Isihara Colour Vision Test.

• Outgoing personality and good communication skills.

• Previous full-time or part-time work experience in a commercial hair salon is desirable.

• A letter from the owner or manager of a hairdressing salon offering work experience is an advantage.

Typical Employment Opportunities.Hairdressers cut, shampoo, condition, style, perm and colour

ladies and gents hair. They also advise customers about hair

products and carry out reception duties. Graduates from this

course seek employment as junior hairdressers, where they

work alongside and under the direct supervision of a qualified

hairdresser. Typically, graduates from this course will require a

further 2 years of on-the-job training to become fully qualified

hairdressers.
