Pauwel Kwak 8.4% A full-bodied Belgian Speciality Ale. Amber in colour with a slightly sweet, rich, seductive malt character. Kwak comes with its own branded glass – history has it that travellers would often stop at an inn for refreshment. However, the coachmen were required to stay with the coach and horses. Standard handled mugs were impractical for gloved coachmen sitting high up, so one enterprising innkeeper, Pauwel Kwak, had a special glass created for his beer. The eye-catching round bottomed shape enabled it to be hung on the coach and be easily held in a thick glove. We have 2 Kwak glasses available, and in keeping with tradition, if you would like to use one with your Kwak, one of your shoes must be left at the bar as a deposit on its safe return! However, if your feet are a bit smelly, a £20 deposit will suffice!

Bacchus Frambozenbier 5.8%

An Honsebrouck is a family owned brewery in West Flanders, Belgium. It makes a range if beers including Bacchus, a beer brewed with wild yeast in the local style of the region. It is on this beer that the framboise is based, a premium fruit beer for which Belgium is well known. Hand wrapped and presented in half champagne bottles. This is a remarkable beer, more sweet than sour.

375ml £4.95 58

Cantillon Rose De Gambrinus (Raspberry) 5%

"It has the colour of onion skin", said a voice behind me. It was Raymond Coumans. He was admiring the colour of the raspberry lambic reflecting in the red copper of the buckets used to empty the barrels. At that time (1986), "Raspberry-Lambic" already was synonymous with a sweet, artificially flavoured beer. This is why we decided to distinguish our beer from the other raspberry beers. Raymond proposed to call it a rosé, dedicated not to Bacchus but to Gambrinus. The lambic taste is dominant over the fruit, giving a sour raspberry flavour that is refreshing and moreish.

375ml £6.70 98

Lindemans Apple 3.5% Long before hops were common in most beers, various fruits and herbs were used to flavour beers. The clean, bright aroma and flavour of apples melds beautifully with the complex tartness of lambic. It has a smooth, light body and a fresh flavour of real apples and a light green-apple tartness.

250ml £3.20 55

Lindemans Cassis 3.5% A classic Belgian favourite. Blackcurrants have been used for centuries as an ingredient in beers and liquors in Belgium and Northern Europe. Moor So’Hop 4.3% Homebrewer (future pro?) Casey Letellier provided the inspiration for this New World beer. After a day of brewing with me he kindly brought several bottles of homebrew. One of them was a pale ale hopped with a variety I had never had before – Riwaka from New Zealand. From the first mouthful I knew I had to brew with that hop. I was on the phone the next day with the hop merchants, but it would not be coming to the UK for another 10 months. I checked back often, even tracking the progress of the boat as it approached (delayed, of course!). My memory of the power of that hop was so vivid. I did not want to have it compete for flavour with coloured malts, but there needed to be a balancing malt flavour to enhance drinkability. I managed to source a low coloured cara malt – difficult to malt, difficult to crush and very inefficient to work with, but adding good body and some honeyed sweetness. Rather than use traditional pale malt I went with a lighter lager malt to both lighten the colour and alter the malt profile. The resultant beer still remains one of the favourites of many people.

Moor Illusion 4.7% Illusion was inspired by the awesome new beer style created in the States known as Imperial Black Ale. We sourced the special malt required from Germany and the hops from America to create a beer of stunning depth and complexity. The beer is black in appearance but lacks the acrid flavours associated with all other dark beers. This is achieved through use of the special German malt. The hop aromas and flavours are very intense, which we achieve through a major dose of dry-hopping in the cask. The result is a beer that wraps all the wonderful hop profiles of a pale ale inside a silky black exterior. It is truly an Illusion that deceives your eyes and dazzles your taste buds. Due to the rare nature of these special ingredients it is a limited release beer, but we are looking at making it more regularly available if possible.

Little is known about this except it was high in alcohol, brewed with cereals and, most probably, honey. Thornbridge’s Bracia has been infused with a generous amount of dark and bitter Chestnut Honey. This was sourced by Head Brewer Stefano Cossi from Beekeeper Onelia Pin in the Alpine foothills of North East Italy. Aromas are of chestnut, honey, cappuccino, white chocolate, dark fruits, and vibrant fresh peel. The mouthfeel is velvety and rich, with notes of coffee, chocolate, liquorice and hazelnuts with warming alcohol, cocoa and a little peat in the finish. Samuel Smiths Oatmeal Stout 5%

Originally a drink for lactating mothers, oatmeal stout was described as nutritional on early labels. Oats are in the same family as barley, and a small addition yields great flavour. Popular in the late 1800’s, the last oatmeal stout was brewed before the First World War until Samuel Smith reintroduced this style in 1980. Almost opaque, with an unusually silky texture and complex, medium-dry velvet palate. Bittersweet finish.

Ola Dubh (or ‘Black Oil’) is a collaboration between Harviestoun Brewery and Highland Park, Distiller of the Year. It is based on Harviestoun’s award-winning Old Engine Oil. With more than a stylistic nod to the classic Imperial Porters (and Stouts) of the nineteenth century, this deliciously rich, dark, 8% abv beer is the first ale to be aged in malt whisky casks from a named distillery and, with traceable casks and numbered bottles. This version has been aged in casks formerly used to mature Highland Park 12 year old. Ola Dubh is, in the words of beer aficionado Owen D.L. Barstow: “The most interesting new British beer I have tried in years.”

The Paulaner Salvator with its strong, typically malty taste is the original Paulaner. The bottom-fermented Doppelbock-Bier unites the finest hops and dark barley malt. The Paulaner monks served Salvator as a replacement for food at Lent. Their most famous brewer was Brother Barnabas, who was the head of the Paulaner monastery brewery starting from 1773. Its original recipe is today almost the same as it was in Barnabas' time. In order to protect the original recipe, Paulaner had the trade mark "Salvator" patented in 1896. Eisbock

Schneider Aventinus Eisbock 12%

Aventinus, the Wheat Doppelbock of Bavaria was always known to be the most intense and complex wheat beer in the world. Up until the 1940’s, Aventinus was shipped all over Bavaria in containers lacking temperature control. Consequently, the precious drink partially froze during transportation. Unaware that the brew was concentrated by the separation of water from the liquid, people were baffled by this unique version of Aventinus. By chance, the first Aventinus Eisbock was created. Well aware of this story, Hans Peter Drexler, brewmaster of the Schneider brewery, decided to recreate this classic "mistake" in a modern controlled facility. Thus, the Aventinus Eisbock is reborn sixty years later. Prost!

This Weizen is a somewhat hazy copper colour with a visibly active carbonation. It’s big and creamy off white head lasts forever. The nose is delicate but complex. A light banana character greets first, with rich caramel malt notes quick on the heels. Slowly it opens up into a big malty aroma accentuated by cloves, cinnamon and pepper. A creamy but not overpowering body and clean mild flavour make this a very drinkable beer. Rich dry maltiness comes through and there is the slightest hop bitterness.

Black Hole is what Mikkeller is all about. Daring, vulgar and extreme. From the very beginning Mikkeller’s goal has been to push the limit and with this warming, intense imperial stout, a new chapter in the Danish beer history has been written. The high bitterness from the hops and the sweetness from the malt and alcohol, creates a good balance which makes Black Hole an explosion of nuances, but also leaves a feeling of a perfect and complex beer – in the heavyweight category.
