Kevin Borland Masonry Award 2017 Design Competition Brief

Message from the CEO of CMAA

TheThinkBrickAwardsremaintherichestdesignawardsinAustraliaandhavebecomeafocalpointforinnovativebrickdesign.Fornearlyadecade,ThinkBrickhascelebratedarchitecturalbrickprojects.IncollaborationwiththeConcreteMasonryAssociationofAustralia,theCommercialMasonryAwardforbuiltprojectswasintroducedin2013torecogniseconcretemasonryindesign.

In2014,theinauguralMasonryAwardwasexpandedtoincluderesidentialprojects.Thisprovidesagreaterstageforconcretemasonrytobeshowcased,andrewardsarchitectswhohavediscoveredthedesignpotentialofconcretemasonryineithercommercialorresidentialbuiltprojects.

Theprizeforthiscategoryis$10,000pluscomplimentaryentrytotheAwardsGalaDinner.

In2015,thiscategorywaswonbyafamilycentreproject,whichtooktheversatilityandbeautyofconcretemasonrytoaninspiringnewlevelandpurpose.

Welookforwardtoreceivingyourentriesandseeinghowyourprojectshavetranscendedtheirconcretemasonrybeginnings.

Who is Concrete Masonry Association of Australia?

TheConcreteMasonryAssociationofAustralia(CMAA)representstheconcretemasonrymanufacturersofAustralia.

TheCMAApublishestechnicalmanuals,datasheetsandsoftwarepackages,relatingtoconcreteblockwalling,concretepaving,permeablepavingandconcretemasonryretainingwalls,whicharefreetodownloadfromtheCMAAwebsite.TheAssociationalsoconductsworkshopsandcoursesandprovidesatechnicaladvisoryservicefortheconstructionindustryandotherusesofconcretemasonryproducts.

TheCMAAsupportstheconcretemasonryindustrybyprovidingtechnicalinformationandadvicetoarchitects,engineers,specifiersandeducators.TheCMAApublishestechnicalmanuals,datasheetsandsoftwarepackages,relatingtoconcreteblockwalling,concretepaving,permeablepavingandconcretemasonryretainingwalls,whicharepubliclyavailablefromtheirwebsite.TheAssociationalsoconductsworkshopcoursesandprovidesatechnicaladvisoryserviceformasonrydesignqueries.

Competition overview

TheKevinBorlandMasonryAwardwillrewardandshowcaseconcretemasonryincommercialandresidentialarchitecturaldesign.

Projectsinthiscategorymustbebuiltprimarilyforcommercialorresidentialpurposes.Commercialprojectscanincludegovernment,public,health,educationandmulti-residentialconstructions.Residentialprojectscanincludesingle-dwellinghouses.Concretemasonrymustbeafeatureofthedesignprocess.Renderedmasonryisnotconsideredadesignfeature.

TheawardisnamedafterKevinBorland,whowasborninWestMelbourneon28October1926.Borland’sdesigns,morethanthoseofanyotherarchitect,haveshapedthetrajectoryofMelbournearchitecture.HisworksincludetheMelbourneswimminganddivingstadiumforthe1956SummerOlympicsaswellastheHaroldHoltMemorialSwimmingCentreinMelbourne’sGlenIrisin1968to1969.Aswellasaninnovativearchitect,Borlandwasagenerouspatronofyoungerarchitectsandaninspiringandmuch-loveddesignstudioteacher.

Nominatedprojectmustmeetthefollowingcriteria:

• CommercialprojectscompletedsinceJanuary2015andlocatedinAustralia.

• ResidentialprojectscompletedsinceJanuary2015andlocatedinAustralia.

• NotenteredintopreviousThinkBrickawards.

• Mustexemplifyarchitecturalinnovation,collaborationbetweenprojectteam,andshowahighlevelofskillandcraftsmanship.

• Entrymustbesubmittedbytheclosingdateof28th April, 2017.

• Onlyentriesthataresubmittedinfullandonline through our websitewillbeaccepted.

• Aprojectmaybeenteredinmultiplecategories,providingthatprojectmeetsthecriteriaofthespecificcategoryasoutlinedbelow.EachprojectmayonlybeenteredonceinthesameCommercialandResidentialMasonryCategory.

Residential Category

Projectsinthiscategorymustbeindividualandresidentialinnatureandincludedwellingswithalterationsandadditions.

ThefinalistsandwinnersoftheKevinBorlandMasonryAwardcategory2017willbeannouncedandpresentedattheAwardsGalaDinner,whichwillbeheldinMelbourneonThursday, 10th August 2017.Allsubmissionswillreceiveaninvitationfortwoforeachpartyinvolvedinthesubmission.Additionalticketstoattendtheeventareavailableforpurchase.

TheAwardsGalaDinnerincorporatestheHorburyHuntResidential,HorburyHuntCommercial,KevinBorlandMasonry-CommercialandResidential,BruceMackenzieLandscape,andRobinDodsRoofTileExcellencecategories.

Post Competition Promotion

TheprojectswillbefeaturedontheThinkBrickAustralia,ConcreteMasonryAssociationofAustraliaandRoofingTileAssociationofAustraliawebsites,socialmedia,publications,industrypresentations,roadshowsandTBA/CMAA/RTAAevents.

Media Demands

Participantsshouldbepreparedtomakethemselvesavailableforallmediaandpublicityrequestsontheirsubmittedprojects,includingbutnotlimitedtophone,emailorface-to-faceinterviewsforbroadcast,online,socialmedia,orprintpublication.

Terms and conditions

Photographssubmittedaspartofthisnominationmaybeexhibited,publishedandusedinmarketingactivitiesinthepromotionoftheAwardsandasacasestudyontheThinkBrickAustralia,ConcreteMasonryAssociationofAustraliaandRoofingTileAssociationofAustraliawebsites.

ThewinningprojectandanyreceivingcommendationswillalsobepublishedinThinkBrickAustralia,ConcreteMasonryAssociationofAustraliaandRoofingTileAssociationofAustralia’spublications.

ThinkBrickAustralia,ConcreteMasonryAssociationofAustraliaandRoofingTileAssociationofAustraliarespectyourprivacyandwillnotshareyourcontactinformationwithanythirdparty.

Assessment

Jury

AjuryconsistingofeminentarchitectsandindustryprofessionalswillbeappointedbyThinkBrickAustraliatojudgethesubmissionsandannounceawinner.The2016jurywillbeannouncedontheThinkBrickAustraliawebsite.

Eachjurorwillberequiredtoacknowledgepersonalorprofessionalconnectionswithanyoftheparticipantsortheiremployees.Inthecaseofsuchconflicts,theCompetitionAdvisorwilloverseeatransparentprocesswherebytheseconflictsarealleviated.AtthediscretionoftheCompetitionAdvisor,jurorswillbeaskedtotakenopartintheassessmentofaffectedentries.Aphotographerwillalsobepresentduringthejudgingtodocumenttheevent.

Eachjurorwillberequiredtoacknowledgepersonalorprofessionalconnectionswithanyoftheparticipantsortheiremployees.Inthecaseofsuchconflicts,theCompetitionAdvisorwilloverseeatransparentprocesswherebytheseconflictsarealleviated.AtthediscretionoftheCompetitionAdvisor,jurorswillbeaskedtotakenopartintheassessmentofaffectedentries.

• PROJECT STATEMENT:ThisisasummaryoftheprojectthatwewillincludeinourAwardsBook.Pleaseincluderelevantbackgroundinformationabouttheproject,whatbricks/paverswereused,andtheteaminvolved(includingarchitect,masonrycontractor,brickmanufacturerandbuilder).Minimum of 50 and maximum of 200 words.

• IMAGES:Pleaseuploadaminimum of 2 and maximum of three (3) images at high resolution thatbestrepresentyourproject.Werequirethehighresolutionimagestobeaminimum of 3500 pixels (w) at 300 dpi.Pleasesupplyallimagesineitherjpeg, tif or PDF format.
