PERSONAL ESSAY

Discuss an accomplishment or event, formal or informal, that marked your transition from childhood to adulthoodwithin your culture, community, or family.

Tiny beads of sweat slowly trickled down my face. My eyes patrolled the terrace, shifting from side-to-siderevealing my obvious nervousness and confusion. Fatigue had set in and started to corrupt my muscles.Despite my rapid heartbeat, I could feel my body becoming increasingly sluggish and sore. With so muchwork yet ahead of me, the stress had already accumulated and I feared an eruption of uncontrollable, instinctual emotions was inevitable. What had I gotten myself into?

There are few moments in my life as painfully memorable as those from my first day of work this pastsummer. At the ripe age of 17 with the entire summer ahead of me, a new sense of maturity shaped mythoughts and emotions. Using this new found energy, I decided to apply for a bus boy position at The QuailInn, a world famous 5 diamond resort. I can still recall the anxiety I felt walking into the Human ResourcesOffice at the Inn. Wearing my savory navy blue jacket, a snow white Calvin Klein dress shirt, my favorite lightblue and black Kenneth Cole tie, and lightly pinstriped Brooks Brothers navy blue slacks, I sat nervouslywaiting for my scheduled interview. Although the questions I answered were simple and straightforward, I stillfound the interview slightly nerve-racking and was uncertain about the outcome. Apparently taken with mystyle of dress and intelligence, the manager invited me to start work the following week. Few words candescribe the sense of satisfaction and fulfillment I felt having been solely responsible for this achievement.Unlike my previous "employment" which had been aided or influenced by my parents, this bus boy positionwas all my own.

On the appointed day, a week later, dressed in an orange dress shirt the color of potato bisque, a whitemaid's apron and black slacks, I arrived at the restaurant. Juggling multiple platters and instructions from thehostess, waiters, and cooks, I still remember my first encounter with a guest which involved much mumbling, stuttering and the butchering of the pronunciation of Creme Brulee. Then carrying a metal pan of bread, freshly removed from a 400-degree oven, I clumsily slipped on a wet spot in the kitchen flinging hot breadbombs of sourdough rolls in every direction possible. With a loud crash from the metal pan, I futilely tried toavoid contact with what felt like a thousand eyes on me as I sat there embarrassed having just fallen. Themost unfortunate part of this incident involved the contact between this pan and the skin of my neck, effectively producing a second-degree burn, branding me forever as property of the Quail Inn.

As might be expected, things did go better as the summer progressed, and I became more experienced in theways of clearing tables and pronouncing French desserts. I never burned myself with a bread pan again, although I did miss a stair and spill an assortment of half empty wine glasses and beer bottles on my shirt.Looking back on that first day now, I laugh but that doesn't minimize its importance. Life in my little town ispretty sheltered and like most, my parents are naturally protective. So although nerve wracking, unpleasantand a bit dangerous, that was my own first hand experience with the real world; and I learned a lot about howto talk to customers, how to interact with co-workers, and how not to carry bread pans. Most importantly, theevents of that first day taught me how to learn from my mistakes.

Home grown in our little town of Glen Ellen, Kevin set a goal to attend Meadow at age eight - hisuncle is a graduate - and he arrived to campus four years ago.

Naturally talented, he dove right in, but admits that he was not as well prepared as many of hisclassmates. Still, Kevin did not falter, and by the start of sophomore year, he made his way into our advancedmath and science tracks. Kevin's performance steadily improved, which boosted his confidence. But thenKevin admits that having attained that solid "B" average actually stifled what he now recognizes as his bestacademic self. He shares, "With daily effort it was easy to get B's, but the real challenge was in achieving the"A" grade. That accomplishment required much more of me; it required me to push myself mentally andphysically in ways that were unfamiliar to me." His teachers agree. They saw moments of brilliance anddistinctively strong effort; but they were waiting for was the consistency that would help Kevin shift to thenext level.

The pivotal moment came in AP Biology junior year where Kevin earned a straight "A" grade in bothwinter and spring trimesters. Kevin was suddenly firing on all cylinders. Inspired by the course, he spent timethat summer shadowing doctors in County Hospital to gain real world experience. After this experience, Kevintold me, "All of a sudden I feel much wiser and fit to work to my full potential." True to his word, Kevinearned his most impressive set of grades this fall trimester (see grade sheet attached), and we have no doubtthat he will sustain this level of achievement.

In the midst of all this academic growth, as a non-boarder Kevin has also had to juggle his life in twocommunities - Meadow and Glen Ellen. This is not an easy feat, and my experience with students like Kevinis that they often feel compelled to sacrifice engagement in one community for the other. Yet probably becauseof his easy-going nature and athleticism he has been able to define his place here at Meadow while remainingconnected to his family and friends in town. Here are some great examples: (1) Although not a huge camperwhen he arrived, Kevin has excelled in this school requirement and contributed his good spirit and teamworkto a four-day backpacking trip to Yosemite, and (2) After our lead saxophonist graduated last year, Kevindecided to try out for Jazz Band; Kevin spent all summer practicing - he had not played his saxophone sinceenrolling at Meadow - and was determined to make a "come back," which he did.

The extracurricular activity that most defines Kevin is basketball. He plays varsity basketball forMeadow, and he also commits a huge amount of time to playing club ball with a premier team in SanFrancisco. Kevin has been told his whole life that "basketball is [his] ticket to college." However, I assure youthat he has not gone through high school, nor will he go through college, on some sort of blind, Gatsby-likequest. He is firmly planted in reality, and has worked tireless both on and off the court. As a testament to this,Kevin hustled to find a real job as a bus boy at a five-star hotel in our neighboring city this past summer.

Kevin knows that wherever he finds himself, he'll be happy. I recommend him to you with deepaffection, warmth and respect.

TE Short Evaluation

Letter of Recommendation for Kevin Matthews

The best way that I can describe Kevin is "quietly thoughtful." He has the rare ability to process theinformation that he is learning, integrate it into his current knowledge, and then apply it to newsituations. Having known Kevin for just over a year, 1 have been impressed by his intellect, his workhabits, and his sense of humor. I know him both as a student and as a person, having had him as astudent in Advanced Placement Biology and having backpacked with him as part of our school'soutdoor adventure program to Yosemite. His considerable ability as well as his subtle andunderstated sense of humor make him a quiet leader among his classmates. Kevin is not the type ofperson that you notice because he is always raising his hand and sharing his knowledge in class, butwhen he does, it is quite obvious that he has the attention of his peers. What he lacks in quantity ofsharing he more than makes up in quality. When Kevin speaks, his classmates listen!

During the first trimester of AP Biology Kevin was extremely steady. 1 could always count on himto do consistently good work. He caught on to concepts easily, and he was able to express himselfwell on both assignments and exams. Where he really showed his understanding was in regard tocarrying out and reporting on the required AP Labs. While the concepts didn't always come easily tohim at first, he was able to come to a thorough understanding of the concepts and wasn't satisfied byjust knowing the correct answers.

It was during the second and third trimesters of biology Kevin was really able to shine. His steadyinginfluence in a class where some of the students took their learning just a little too seriously made mylife as a teacher much easier. His easy smile and solid work habits served him well. His consistentlystrong effort translated into a score on the AP Exam that indicates that he is well qualified to receivecredit or advanced standing in college level biology. In the post-AP Exam part of the course, Kevinseemed to thrive in our dissection work. He and his partner really seemed to enjoy the study ofmammalian anatomy in these hands-on activities. His oral presentation on mercury in fish showed athorough understanding of this environmental issue as well.

At Meadow, we accompany the students on two week-long backpacking trips each year. I was luckyenough to have Kevin on my trip this last August. His steady "leadership by example" made my lifea lot easier. He was always willing to take more than his share of "group gear," and although hisbackpack was one of the biggest and heaviest, he never complained and was usually one of thestudents out in the front of the pack as we hiked. In the evenings when we prepared and cleaned upour dinner, most times he would be organizing his cooking group before I asked, and he was neveradverse to cleaning up more than his share of the meal and of the camp when we moved on to ournext destination.

Kevin's interest in science and medicine extends to his involvement in many volunteer activities aswell. This past summer he spent time shadowing surgeons in the local hospital to see what theirpractice was all about. This academic year, he is spending time as an intern in the local veterinaryhospital, where he can get more hands-on experiences with "patients."

It has been truly a pleasure getting to know Kevin over this last year, and I give him my highestrecommendation and wish him luck in all of his future pursuits.

Sincerely,

John Applegate

Dear Coach Paulson:

My name is Kevin Matthews, and I am a rising senior at Meadows High School. I visitedJefferson in February, and I had a chance to watch the men's basketball team play.

I hope to meet you at Jefferson's basketball camp this summer.

I've had a pretty decent basketball career. (I've attached my resume.) I play for myschool's varsity team, as well as the San Francisco Rebels (club team).

While I'm not sure my talent is at the level of other Jefferson players, I would love to bea "walk-on" to the team if I am lucky enough to be admitted. I am also good with theclock and consider myself a sports statistician. I would be honored to help in thatcapacity, too.

Sincerely,Kevin Matthews

MEMO

To: Admission Sports LiaisonFrom: Coach Paulson, Men's Basketball Coach

Kevin Matthews (Glen Ellen, CA - Meadow High School) attended our summerbasketball camp, prior to which he visited Jefferson with his family.

Our star point guard is graduating in 2014, and I would like to work with Kevin next yearto get ready to start for Jefferson in the 2014-2015 academic year. He has a lot of growthpotential and he'll make an immediate impact on the court. He's also highly coachable, mature, thoughtful and smart.

I have been in touch with both his high school and club coaches. According to them,Jefferson is his first choice.

Sincerely,Coach Paulson
