Selecting Teams ● Teams were selected depending on:
○ skill level (attempt to have at least one member of every skill level on each
team)
○ whether they were a leader or a follower (there should not be a team of leaders
or followers, at least 1 leader on each team)
○ whether they were absent often (team members need to be present especially
during the postseason)
○ who they were friends (the season should involve new friendships being made,
not a whole group of friends to avoid off task behavior)
● Teacher will be selecting teams based on these variables
● Teacher will also select which roles the students will hold based on their personalities
in past PE experiences
● Once teams are selected and assembled, the students will choose what country they
want to be for the season

NitroBall Learning from Scratch
At the beginning of January, one of the school’s Physical Education teachers decided
to try something new with a group of lucky sophomores at CHS. Mr. Mirando, in the middle of
his fourth year teaching Physical and Health Education at Cheshire, decide to implement an
extensive unit focusing on the sport: NitroBall.
Now what is NitroBall? “If I can put into simple terms, it’s inverted volleyball. So
instead of hitting the ball before in lands on the ground, you must let it bounce before you can
set, bump spike, or simply hit the ball over the net,” said Mr. Mirando, when asked about the
sport that his class was never exposed to prior to this year. He stated that planning this unit
37
took a lot of time, using professional development hours and late nights to ensure that the unit
went smoothly and everyone in the class had a worthwhile experience.
Teams were selected by Mr. Mirando, given roles such as captain and scorekeeper to
give different responsibilities to different students. The teams were given a choice of countries
to represent themselves as. The students began learning the history and simple skills of the
sport such as bumps and sets. After the first couple class practices the class progressed to
more advanced skills such as a spike and drop shot. The class then progressed to unofficial
preseason games to get familiar with gameplay.
“I wanted the students to get comfortable with strategies and techniques of the game.
it wouldn’t be right if the season started the day after they learned the skills. You need a
preseason to prosper in the regular season and postseason,” Mirando added.
Once the regular season was over, the postseason begin. A bracket with a consolation
bracket for more gameplay for teams that lose out of the tournament early was made to
ensure every team places at least six (6) official games. When the final game was over,
Germany was victorious. Captain and award winner of most valuable offensive player,
Amanda Palladino, commented on her experience in the unit, “I had an amazing time, the
teams had people with all different skill sets and it was great to see everyone be involved in
the game and on the sidelines with commentators, statisticians, and referees.” Other awards
were given out such Most Improved to Team Russia player, Liz Solesky, and Best Team
PLayer to Team Italy player, Lauren Arpino.
The roles caused everyone to be involved as Palladino said earlier, Jamie Nichols, the
manager of Team Brazil had positive things to say about the diverse roles, “I was the
manager of Team Brazil, so I had to make sure everyone had equipment and that it all got
back in one piece. It felt nice to know that I was helping things go smoothly and that my role
was important, we all worked together and everyone just kind of fell into place, it was
necessarily about winning or losing.”
When asked about the outcome of the “Sport Education Model,” focusing on NitroBall
went, Mr. Mirando said, “I am incredibly proud of my students. They took this opportunity to
grow as skilled individuals and become better teammates. It’s not about the wins and losses,
it was about growing as an individual.”
Mr. Mirando says that planning for another Sport Education Model is in the making. He
would not reveal what he would focus this on, but we are excited to see where the next
38
extensive and indepth unit takes his students. Maybe you will be lucky enough to be a part of
it!
