Kevin P. Kearns, Ph.D.

Kevin P. Kearns is the Associate Vice President for Graduate Studies and Research and Profes-sor of Communication Disorders and Sciences at SUNY Fredonia. He is the President of the SUNY Fredonia Technology Incubator, Inc., and a Senior Research Associate for the Children’s Hospital of Boston Autism Program. Kearns has published extensively in the area of neurogenic communication disorders, research, and clinical outcomes. He is an editorial reviewer for numer-ous professional journals and he serves on the ASHA Publications Board. Dr. Kearns received the Honors of the Academy of Neurologic Com-munication Sciences and Disorders (ANCDS) and he is an ASHA Fellow.

Due to the fair market value of benefits provided, registration fees are not considered charitable contributions. Net proceeds from the conference will be used to benefit the annual James L. Case Scholarship in the ASU Foundation.

Cancellations received at least seven working days before the workshop are refundable less a $35 administrative charge per registrant. Pay-ment is nonrefundable for cancellations made after October 1, 2011.

Evidence-Based Practice in Neurogenic Communication Disorders: Lessons From a

Single-Subject Research Perspective

Evidence based practice and the availability of sys-tematic reviews and practice guidelines (ANCDS; ASHA) have accelerated interest in intervention re-search that can be readily adopted into clinical prac-tice. Interdisciplinary research teams have devel-oped and tested a wide range of neurological and, other interventions for aphasia. It is imperative that clinicians have the ability to critically evaluate the treatment and determine the strength of evidence that supports new research developments and trans-lates into clinical practice. The predominant meth-odology for investigating neurogenic interventions is single- subject designs. Clinicians, must develop the skills necessary to become competent research consumers and accountable practitioners.

Learning Outcomes

At the completion of this workshop you will: 1. Become aware of recent findings in the aphasia

intervention literature that can be incorporated into clinical practice.

2. Be familiar with basic single-subject research design principles that are important for critically appraising the intervention literature and which may help improve clinical accountability.

3. Understand the strengths and shortcomings of the evidence based practice (EBP) movement and be able to access relevant EBP resources for aphasia and related disorders.

CEUs This course is offered for 0.6 ASHA CEUs (Intermediate Level, Professional Area). Approved for six (6) CEUs by AZ Department of Health Services. Certificate of Attendance available at end of Workshop.
