Cornwall Council has updated its brand and design guidelines, aiming to get greater consistency in how the Council presents itself to the community.

As part of this process, the Council has agreed a new design for signs at sites owned by the Council. The site name signs are now bilingual and sites will use the new format as signs are replaced, with the first signs having been

installed at Cornwall Council-owned cemeteries.

This is a welcome move as the Cornish language text is integral to the design, thus removing the need for Cornish speakers to argue the case for the language in each individual case. All place names are being provided by the Akademi Kernewek.

This year’s Skians conference will be at the University of Exeter’s Penryn Campus on Saturday 13 October.

This is the annual conference for Cornish language research, with a range of speakers including Phillippa Mills on links between Cornish speaking families in 19th Century, Pol Hodge on registers of speech, and Siarl Ferdinand on attitudes to Cornish. The keynote speaker will be Professor Robert Dunbar from the University of Edinburgh, an expert on Celtic language policy.

Bude-based company, Triangular Pixels, has launched their new virtual reality game on PlayStation.

The game is called Smash Hit Plunder and has been made available in various languages in order to be sold across the EU market. In ‘localising’ their game, Triangular Pixels also wanted to offer it in their local language – Kernewek.

This is the first time a VR game has been made available in Cornish. Katie Goode, Creative Director of Triangular Pixels says “Being based in Cornwall, we saw that it was important to support local culture. Cornwall is a magical place and was of great inspiration while making the game.”

It is one of the longest translations done by the Translation Service and one of the most complex translations due to the non-linear nature of the video game script. Digital apps are increasingly designed to be ‘localised’ so that they can be made to work in a range of languages. This reduces the cost of adding a language, so creates new opportunities for smaller languages like Cornish.

Smash Hit Plunder is available now on PlayStation.

There will be even more for Cornish speakers this year, with gin-tasting, shanty singing and our first wikithon – as well as all the music and dancing from the six Celtic nations. Last year’s festival was full of Kernewek so do come along to experience some fantastic Celtic culture. Book tickets on the Lowender Peran website.

The Translation Service reached another milestone in September with its 7,500th translation.

The translation was for Chloe Phillips at Kresen Kernow for a forthcoming exhibition. The Service was started formally on 11 September 2006 and since then has played an essential role in developing the use and visibility of Cornish.

Thanks to the translators for all their hard work - to Jori Ansell, the head translator, and to Tony Hak, Roger Courtenay, Rod Sheaff, Elizabeth Ellis, Dan Prohaska, Rod Lyon, Neil Kennedy, Jan Edmondson and Pol Hodge.

Pellwolok an Gernewegva recently ran a successful Crowdfunding campaign to raise more money to enable both the radio and online video programming to continue in Cornish.

However, this still relies too heavily on Matthi Clarke. Mike Tresidder is therefore hoping to run a video editing course so that more of us can make short films in Cornish on our phones and improve their quality by editing. These could be interviews, conversations or songs.

If we can get a minimum of eight people, then CN4C can fund a NVQ unit at level 3 in video editing. This will probably be on a weekday after work in the Camborne/Redruth area.

If you are interested, please register your interest and check whether you qualify for a free place by contacting either Mike at CN4C or the Cornish Language Office.

Agan Tavas will publish the first full edition of the Camborne Play — Bewnans Meriasek — since Whitley Stokes' version was published in 1872.

This edition will be in Unified Cornish with the English translation in the adjacent column. Agan Tavas contacted the town of Pontivy in Brittany in order to seek permission to use pictures of the murals in the church of St Meriadoc de Stival. So there are 12 illustrations of them in the book likewise three illustrations of artwork around the town of Camborne associated with St Meriadoc.

The official launch of the book will take place on Friday 12th October in Camborne Parish Church at 7.00 in the evening. All are welcome.
