‘Horrific’ dog attack kills petA family pet was killed in a savage attack by another dog in front of its owners.

Five-year-old pug Winston died after his windpipe was crushed during the mauling by a pitbull near the family’s home in Sheerwater Road, Beckton.

Mum-of-two Rachel Johnson said

the killer dog was “out of control” and had no lead or owner nearby, adding: “He was running around with Winston in his mouth, it was horrific.”

The 35-year-old, who has a second pug named Doobie, said the pitbull also injured her daughter, 18, when she tried to get Winston back.

Police are hunting the owner of the pitbull. Anyone with information should call the Met on 101.

Copper Box worker is top apprenticeA 21-year-old trainee working at the Copper Box has been named Apprentice of the Year by the Lon-don Legacy Development Corpora-tion (LLDC).

As part of the National Appren-ticeship Week celebrations, the success of more than 50 Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park apprentic-es was recognised with an awards ceremony at City Hall.

Since the London 2012 Games, more than 110 young people have worked as apprentices at the park, with jobs ranging from construc-tion and business administration at the stadium, to poolside and lei-sure roles at the Aquatics Centre, to maintaining the parklands land-scaping.

Steven Condon, 21, from Tower Hamlets, began working as a full-time arena assistant at the Copper Box in June 2013 before a promo-tion to venue duty manager within 10 months.

He said: “This award means a great deal to me and it is fantastic to share this experience with my mum and dad.”

Other successes on the night included Apprentice of the Year runners-up Gintare Butkute from Newham, a business adminis-tration trainee, and Mohammed Mohammed, from Barking and Dagenham, an electro-technical apprentice at the stadium.

Companies were also honoured for their support of young people with Employer of the Year award-ed to international infrastructure group Balfour Beatty.

Be paid to learn a trade and Three apprentices explain how scheme is helping them follow their dreams

What do Sir Alex Ferguson, Eric Clapton and Michael Caine all have in common?

Believe it or not, they all started out their careers as apprentices, learning a trade on the job.

The number of new apprentices starting across the borough each year has increased by 1,130 be-tween 2009/10 and 2013/14 – despite a drop of 80 over the last financial year.

That drop corresponds with Eng-land-wide figures, with 70,000 fewer people across the country starting an apprenticeship over the same period.

In a bid to address the fall, the eighth National Apprenticeship Week runs until Friday, with hun-dreds of events across the country highlighting the importance of the apprentices to individuals, busi-nesses and the wider economy.

One of the institutions champi-oning the cause is Newham Col-lege. It has delivered more than 5,000 apprenticeships.

Jennifer Miah, 22, of Waterside Road, Plaistow, works four days a week at the college’s Business Lab in the Stratford Centre.

Designed as an alternative office environment for SMEs (small and medium-sized enterprises) from across the borough, the centre of-fers free hotdesking and profes-sional business advice.

After a brief stint working for an estate agent, Jennifer began volun-

teering at the college before enroll-ing on a business administration apprenticeship with the Lab when it opened earlier this year.

“It’s an amazing project to be a part of, because it’s ultimately all about helping people,” she said. “It’s been amazing to see this place go from nothing to the facility it is now as well.

“I’d recommend looking into ap-prenticeships 100 per cent – doing this has really opened my eyes.

“There’s no knowing where it might lead and it could open a lot of doors in the future.”

College principal and chief ex-ecutive Di Gowland insists the ap-prenticeships are good for employ-ers and youngsters alike.

“We are currently delivering more than 1,500 apprenticeships into and across a wide variety of industries – child and social care, bespoke tailoring and fashion de-signers, restaurants, bookshops to name but a few.

“We are helping employers meet their skills gaps and recruitment difficulties in a cost-effective way whilst meeting the employment aims of young people and adults.

“Employers appreciate that they can work closely with their appren-tices and create bespoke personnel to meet their company needs.”

Cooking up footballing treatsThe past-faced environment of a professional kitchen is the only place to learn the tricks of the res-turant trade, according to appren-tice chef Kyle Churchman.

Kyle, 17, of Keller Crescent, Manor Park, began working at Stratford’s Cafe Football five days a week from January.

Supplemented by a weekly half-day at Newham College, he said: “It’s a brilliant environment be-cause you’re able to learn so much.

“You’re working with some of the best people in the business, which is really exciting.

“I really wouldn’t be given an op-portunity like this outside of an ap-prenticeship.

“For me it’s a much better op-tion than college full-time because

I never feel like I’m moving that quick.

“Here you’re constantly improv-ing on the job

A big Leyton Orient fan, the weekend work has decreased his Brisbane Road attendances of late, but the job has been supplying his dose of vitamin football.

“I don’t get to see as many Sat-urday afternoon games as I would like, but there is a great atmos-phere here on matchdays,” he said. “You get to meet fans of teams from all over the country, which is cool.”

Maltese head chef Giovann At-tard, 25, added: “Apprentices are crucial in this industry.

“Everybody starts from zero, which is important for youngsters to remember.”

Theatre gives ‘head-start’Among those currently earn-ing and learning with the col-lege is social media apprentice Andrew Kingston.

Working at Theatre Royal Stratford East, the 17-year-old is responsible for editing and maintaining the website, pro-moting marketing campaigns and co-ordinating the theatre’s social media channels.

Last Christmas he designed the programme for the panto, Beauty and the Beast, and insists the earn-while-you-learn style of development is something other young people should look into.

“I always thought I’d go to uni but through this I’ve al-ready got a job and effectively a three-year head-start in the real world,” he said.

“I’m working in the indus-try I want to be in, and I’m still only 17 – it’s great to have a foot already on the ladder.

“Ultimately I’d like to go into corporate marketing, but if someone gives me an opportu-nity like this I was always go-ing to take it.

“You never know how many other people in the world will be given that opportunity – it’s all about experience.”

Owner aiming for Shoreditch spirit in Green Street

Confectionary quirks bid for vegan marketLuxury confectioner Urban Choc-olatier has branched out from its Whitechapel roots to set up shop in Upton Park’s Green Street.

The newly-opened East Shop-ping Centre welcomed the new store to its retailers at an opening on Thursday.

Owner Ali Sadaqat, 25, said the business has already established a reputation in Newham with a strong start since the opening.

He put it down to the unique service Urban Chocolatier offers.

“There’s not really anything else like us in east London, which is partly why we wanted to get in-volved with the shopping centre,” he said. “We wanted to be part of something new – this centre is the only one of its kind Europe and Green Street is the perfect loca-tion.”

The shop provides halal prod-ucts but also vegan-friendly food, avoiding gelatine and alcohol in ingredients as a rule.

“More and more people want ha-lal and vegan-friendly food these

days – so we’re very popular,” he said.

Ali Sadaqat has said that part of his aim is to bring the spirit of Shoreditch to Upton Park.

“The location gives us a really ex-citing mixture of old and new, with some of the most established eth-

nic restaurants on one side and the West Ham football ground on the other,” he said. “We’re hoping to bring the quirkiness of Shoreditch to Green Street.”

The firm is less than two years old and employs 15 people at the Green Street shop.

Urban Chocolatier’s second store is in the East Shopping Centre

Networking evening at business labThe launch of an innovative busi-ness centre is set to attract compa-nies from across the borough for an exclusive networking event to-morrow (Thursday) night.

Newham Chamber of Com-merce will host their first evening reception this year from 5.30pm at the opening of Newham College’s Stratford Business Lab.

The new venture is designed to help the local enterprising com-munity with on-the-spot guidance and information and as a place to hold business meetings or social gatherings and a quiet place to complete paperwork.

Lab manager Glen Addis will give a brief breakdown on how the venue will benefit the borough’s existing businesses.

George Brown, owner of Crea-ductive UK, will also give a short presentation on the youth-led Peace 100 Network – involving teenagers in alternative approach-es to leadership, enterprise and sustainable communities.

Enterprises from across Strat-ford have been invited with plenty of chances to meet new contacts.

Charity boostat business launch eventA national property claims man-agement company is supporting the launch of a local branch.

New local business Aspray London East is hosting a launch event at 6pm tonight at Fox Con-naught.

The event is also an opportunity to raise money for the Richard House Children’s Hospice.

Aspray will be donating £1 for each person who attends on the night.

The evening will consist of a short presentation from an As-pray representative with a charity cheque presentation also planned towards the end of the evening.,

Aspray are leaders in managing property damage insurance claims

The launch raised money for Richard House Children’s Hospice

Claims co charitable launch A national property claims man-agement company launched a new east London hub with a fundrais-ing evening at the Royal Docks.

Aspray London East hosted a special evening at Fox Connaught, in Lynx Way, on Wednesday, Febru-ary 18, to introduce the company while also raising money for a local children’s charity.

For every person who attended the launch, £1 was donated to Richard House Children’s Hospice, while a £100 cheque was also pre-sented to the nearby trust.

Satinder Grewal, event organis-er and director of Aspray London East, hopes to ensure the local community enjoys the benefits of his company’s service.

“It was great to launch and meet and engage with different people, and introduce them to our servic-es,” he said. “We hope to continue working with Richard House and support the fantastic work they do.” For more information, visit aspray.com.

Young people getting jobs with mentoringA mentoring scheme tackling youth joblessness across the borough has been praised by the Shadow Employment Minister.

East Ham MP Stephen Timms recently congratulated CIPD, a professional body for HR and peo-ple development, for its work with youth employment initiative Steps Ahead Mentoring.

As the CIPD’s first “MP cham-pion” for the scheme, Mr Timms joined mentors and young people at West Ham United Football Club last month to celebrate its success

and to encourage more people to sign up.

“Young people are often at a dis-advantage when it comes to finding work,” he said. “Those that have never had access to good-quality careers advice can find it very dif-ficult to bridge the gap into the workplace.

“Just a few hours of mentoring is often all it takes to give young people the direction and support they need to move confidently into working life.

“The Steps Ahead mentors are fantastic role models to help young

people unlock their true potential.”The programme, which cur-

rently boasts more than 2,200 vol-unteers, is aimed at jobseekers aged 18-24 – many who have never worked before.

Open to members of the CIPD and supported by Nesta and the Cabinet Office, the scheme is com-pletely free and matches volun-teers with jobseekers by referral from Jobcentre Plus Work Coach-es.
