Eastern ChicClassic, elegant and effortlessly cool. A kimono is the best

investment you’ll make this year!@ELLEFASHIONTEAM imonos are known for their chic style, loose

fit and versatility. Last summer, floaty, fringed styles proved so popular that New Look were selling 40000 a week, but this season it’s about tradi-tional tailoring, with Marni, Gucci and Céline show-casing a more classically Japanese silhouette.

Marni showcased the natural and raw; linen and cotton billowing out from a wide black judo belt ac-centuates the waist, stylishly defining the female figure – a look that’s flattering for every body shape. Neutral tones of white and cream, with the occasional pastel thrown in, contrasted the dramatic black belt creating an edgy, modern look. Kimono jackets were paired with wide leg trousers, dresses, skirts... everything, marking the piece as truly versatile. It felt effortless.

Céline also opted for a tailored kimono jacket, with wide, full-length sleeves and collars, gathered at the waist by a wide navy belt. Graphic and modern, the minimalistic approach has taken over from the heavy prints of last summer. Gucci followed suit with a deep crimson suede kimono, belted with woven brown leather. Pairing earthy tones worked powerfully against soft blue denim trousers, but it remained feminine.

With sharp, clean lines cinched with a wide belt, the kimono takes on modern in a powerful way.

For workA kimono can be a great option for work. As a tailored style is on trend this season, pairing it with a pair of smart black office trousers and a simple white blouse creates the perfect blend of fashion forward office smart, effortlessly adding a statement edge to your work wardrobe. We love this navy option from Topshop , which would work equally well with jeans, t-shirt and trainers for a casual day time look!

For partyAny soiree or night out is made glamorous in a kimono. Choosing a jewel coloured print in silky fabric and pairing with black skinnies or a midi skirt and strappy heels is the best way to go - on trend and so classy. Add a simple clutch for effortless elegance and belt the kimono if the night calls for a dressier look. This Oasis printed number is the perfect pop of colour to wear with all black everything.

For playSo versatile, the kimono even covers day to day styling. To combat unpredictable British weather, a lightweight knitted kimono is perfect for every day. Zara have a few to choose from, but we love this one, the shorter sleeves don’t get in the way and it could be belted for an easy “I’ve put in sooo much effort” look. Wear over anything; the neutral tone will go with blue jeans, black jeans, tees, dresses, skirts... the list is endless.

So with a huge range of great options on the high street, you really can’t go wrong investing in a kimono (or two!) this season. They’re perfect for layering, go with everything and look so chic you don’t even have to try!
