experimente#digital – a cultural initiative of the Aventis Foundation
Art and culture in the digital sphereIn March 2018, the Aventis Foundation nominated the participating projects for the sec-
ond round of its new funding programme “experimente#digital”. This time, the Foun-
dation granted a total of € 235,000 to eight cultural institutions from the Rhine-Main
area. All of them develop innovative projects at the intersection between the analog and
digital realms: a film festival featuring augmented reality technology, an app to explore
art in hidden places, an audio-visual installation on artificial intelligence and a virtual
platform for innovative concert formats.
The Foundation had initiated the new cultural sponsorship series in October 2016 to
celebrate its 20th anniversary. Each year, it promotes cultural institutions that develop
and realise unique digital projects to constructively engage with the challenges of an
increasingly networked world and use this output in their work with their respective
target groups.
The Foundation has also created a blog that provides information on the progress of the
15 projects sponsored so far. It intends to serve as a platform for the constructive discus-
sion on the use of digital experiments in culture.

Artists Rooms – art in hidden placesFrankfurt’s Museum of Modern Art has always acquired artworks that would seamlessly fit into the architectural design of its interior spaces. Many of these works have been created and installed by the artists themselves – but you may not always be able to spot them at first sight. Apart from that, the museum is only ever able to exhibit a small part of its entire collection, the majority of which is careful-ly stored in a depot. Which is why the Museum has expanded its existing online collection and linked it to an app called “Artists Room”. The app provides a digital visibility for all these hidden artworks and virtually connects them to relevant analog exhibits in the museum. It also enables users and visitors to catch an exclusive glimpse behind the scenes from outside of the museum.
A virtual platform for innovative concert formatsThe Radial Stiftung Berlin is currently developing the website “betterconcerts.org” as a virtual platform that showcases examples of innovative concert productions. It aims at providing a forum for the dynamic re-interpretation of classic concert formats and the re-distribution of roles between perform-ers, set design and audience. It will also feature a documentation database that will be continuously updated with innovative examples, indexed and meta-tagged so that users can easily use keywords to browse it and analyse specific artistic and concep-tional aspects.
experimente#digital – a cultural initiative of the Aventis Foundation
Rhizom Filmgeschichte – aufgeblendet!Supported by funds from the Aventis Founda-tion’s sponsorship series experimente#digital, the Deutsche Filmmuseum/Deutsche Filminstitut in Frankfurt developed a project called “Rhizom Film-geschichte” (“Rhizom Film History”). The project cre-ated an intuitive and easy-to-use web environment that collects the first scenes of more than 100 films from all eras of German cinematographic history. The web space connects these scenes based on stylistic and aesthetic similarities and invites users to explore the resulting collages as a form of digital meta-artwork. Numerous curated paths and digital tools provide additional information on the stylistic devices and narrative strategies of film.

kulturMut – a crowdfunding initiative of the Aventis Foundation
A fifth round and a new participation record In 2013, the Aventis Foundation and the crowdfunding platform Startnext jointly created
the “kulturMut” crowdfunding initiative. In February 2018, the fifth and final season
came to an end with a total of 28 projects sponsored entirely through the initiative. The
spectrum ranged from fine arts and music, theatre, dance and exhibitions to photogra-
phy and experimental documentary film. Throughout these five years, 265 projects filed
their applications, of which 113 could be supported with a total subsidy amount of € 1.8
million. The projects also mobilised over 17,000 supporters who transferred more than
€ 615,000 to the crowdfunding accounts. Another € 1.14 million were donated as grant
funds and prize money by the Aventis Foundation and, since 2016, by the Kulturfonds
Frankfurt RheinMain.
After five successful seasons, the “kulturMut” initiative has been evolved into a curat-
ed and permanent crowdfunding platform for the Rhine-Main area. Applications from
independent artists, professional cultural institutions, students and graduates will now
be accepted year-round. The jury of the Aventis Foundation will convene three times
per year to select the participating projects. In early November 2018, the first 18 projects
were given their chance to present their plans on the “kulturMut” crowdfunding plat-
form. The projects are then curated, and their campaigns supported through individual
consultation and free webinars held by Startnext. The Aventis Foundation and the Kul-
turfonds Frankfurt RheinMain will also help jump-start the participating projects with
an advance payment of 25 % of the final subsidy amount.

A film coming right from the guts of theatreThe plot of the film “Frankfurter Dramen” (“Dramas of Frankfurt”) is set right in the theatre world of the Schauspiel Frankfurt. For the 2017/2018 theatre season, eight students of the Frankfurt University for Music and Performing Arts were given the chance to participate in a training cooperation, and to work at the Schauspiel Frankfurt. They made their first expe-riences in theatre and translated them into the mak-ing of this film. The idea, script and dialogues were all created and enacted by the students themselves. The result is a parody that gives interesting insights into the world on and off the theatre stage.
Session of cultureIn late August 2018, the intercultural music initia-tive “Bridges – Music Connects” was continued in Frankfurt with a public session that embraced and demonstrated the creative potential of cultural diversity and migration. The multi-ethnic ensemble “Sharqstan“, featuring musicians of Syrian, Iranian and German backgrounds, opened with an ener-getic blend of Oriental music played on traditional instruments. Later on, they opened the stage for an experimental jam session that prompted various musicians and instrumentalists to participate on stage.

Poetry in motionIn mid-September 2018, the Junior Ballett Frankfurt performed a dance production called “Poem” at the Gallus Theatre in Frankfurt. The show managed to merge poetry, music and dance choreography into one multi-sensory experience. The ensemble recited poems and songs in various languages and interpreted them in different styles of dancing. The performance involved a range of literary works spanning from Federico García Lorca to Charles Bukowski. It covered music ranging from Benny Goodman and Leonard Cohen to experimental pia-nist Hauschka, and dances ranging from classical to contemporary forms of expression.

Exhibition series at the AtelierfrankfurtIn early June 2018, the Atelierfrankfurt inaugurat-ed its new exhibition spaces at the Atelierhaus in Frankfurt Ostend with an installation called “Tiny Traces” by artist Nina Tobien. The show was the first of a three-part exhibition series that invites female artists to use the extraordinary space for custom-made large-scale works. With 130 ateliers for 220 artists and creatives, the Atelierfrankfurt is the biggest cultural centre in the state of Hesse. Many of the residing artists and artist collectives have participated in the “kulturMut” initiative over the last four years.
Speedy bumper cars and a digital parcoursFor the finale of the Lichter Filmfest 2018 in Frankfurt, the experimente#digital initiative helped finance the world’s first-ever bumber car track with virtually augmented reality surroundings: Illuminat-ed by thousands of light projections, visitors could race through a sea of virtual light and bump into each other along the track. The actual lights of the bumper cars and the projections of virtual objects merged into something entirely new, blurring the lines between real and digital artifacts. It was an impressive taste of what augmented reality will feel like.
Telemann’s long-forgotten masterpiecesIn early May 2018, the concert series “Die kleine Kammermusik” (“The small chamber music”) was inaugurated with the concert performance “Ein Fest für Telemann” at the lobby of the Main Forum Frankfurt. The series will be be comprised of eight performances and celebrate the stylistic diversity in the oeuvre of important German composer Georg Philipp Telemann (1681-1767). It will showcase Telemann’s work for solo and chamber music per-formances and honour his contribution to the local music scene during his Frankfurt years. After the events commemorating his 250th birthday in 2017, the concert series shall provide a platform for the perception and interpretation of his work.

Schauspiel Frankfurt
Inspired by the people of this cityIn early May 2018, the Schauspiel Frankfurt showed the first performance of its three-
year monodrama series “Stimmen einer Stadt” (“Voices of a City”). For three consecu-
tive seasons, three playwrights will be invited to each compose a monodrama inspired
by a real Frankfurt-based biography. The long-term cooperation between the Literatur-
haus Frankfurt and the Schauspiel Frankfurt under its new director Anselm Weber will
be supported by the Aventis Foundation.
The first three monodramas performed in May were all majestic showpieces of how
single actors can enact the lives of other people.
In his piece “Im Dickicht der Einzelheiten” (“In the Thicket of Details”), Frankfurt-based
writer Wilhelm Genazino centered the plot around a young flâneur strolling through
the streets of the Main-metropolis, witnessing and observing every-day-life street
scenes and situations. In “Absturz“ (“Crash”), novelist Olga Grjasnowa told the story
of a 30-year-old airport worker who has to attend the relatives of a group of passengers
who just died in a plane crash. Vienna-based acclaimed and renowned visual artist and
writer Teresa Präauer wrote a piece called “Ein Hund namens Dollar” (“A Dog named
Dollar”) in which she portrayed the peculiar friendship between a stock broker and an
ugly dog who roam the streets of Frankfurt as an odd couple.

Frankfurt Opera
An opera of parting and loss
In early September 2018, the opera piece “Tri Sestry/Drei Schwestern” (“Three Sisters”)
by contemporary composer Péter Eötvös celebrated its first performance at the great
hall of the Frankfurt Opera. The melancholic work was based on the eponymous drama
by Anton Chekhov and, through its music, sensibly conveyed the overwhelming senti-
ments of losing people, dreams and desires. This beautiful season start was made possi-
ble through the support of the Aventis Foundation, which has continued its commitment
as main sponsor of the opera’s premiers and first performances since the 2015/2016
opera season. The plot evolves around three sisters and their brother who grow up in
the Russian countryside, dreaming of a more fulfilling life in their single place of long-
ing: Moscow. Their experiences are marked by their unhappiness and apathy – by loss,
parting and the constant feeling of emptiness. Eötvös masterfully managed to couple
these emotions with their very own and empathetic sounds by using repetitive sound
patterns, historic music references and particular harmonic structures. The peculiar cast-
ing of the three sisters and their sister-in-law – all portrayed by countertenors with their
masculine voices and corporealities – created a certain distance to the characters. Each of
them was accompanied by their own set of characteristic instruments, playing individu-
al musical strands to support the vocal scores.
The second music theatre production promoted for this season was premiered in Sep-
tember 2018: The work “Lost Highway” by contemporary composer Olga Neuwirth was
first performed in German at the Bockenheimer Depot in Frankfurt.

Frankfurt Opera
Music theatre between new music and baroque
In late February 2018, the Opera Frankfurt and the Ensemble Modern partnered for a
special double performance, featuring one first performance and one premier at the
Bockenheimer Depot. The double performance contrasted contemporary and classical
music, but established a thematic link through the contemporary and biblical referenc-
es to Middle Eastern history. The commission for the composition of “Ein winterlicher
Frühling” (“A Winterly Spring”) and “Die bronzene Schlange” (“The Bronze Snake”)
was made possible through the Foundation’s ongoing commitment as main sponsor for
the opera’s premiers and first performances.
The dramatic Lament “A Wintery Spring” created by Jordan-born and Germany-based
composer Said Haddad (*1972) deals with the suffering, the pain and the tears of the
people in Middle East. Haddad based his composition on the balance of physical and
meta-physical qualities and captured the dramatic energy in a virtuous and transcen-
dental musical language. “Il Serpente di bronzo”, a baroque cantata written by Bohemi-
an composer Jan Dimas Zelenka, tells the story of a snake plague sent by God to punish
and purify the doubting people of Israel. The dramatic soundscape of the work was
supported by the expressive and visually enacted arias. French conductor Franck Ollu,
whose artistic work has been closely linked to the Ensemble Modern for many years,
directed the music in both performances.

Ensemble Modern
The audience as artist
With its project “Connect”, first-performed in April 2018 at the Frankfurt LAB, the En-
semble Modern explored new territories in the musical communication between artists
and audience, questioning the conventional hierarchies between performers and listen-
ers. The metaphorical fourth wall between stage and auditorium was literally dissolved.
The audience was encouraged to co-perform two new and interactive compositions by
Philip Venables and Oscar Bianchi in an extraordinary performance-experience spon-
sored by the Aventis Foundation.
The project had started with a commission for two works that would explore the tradi-
tional relationship between artist and audience. The night was opened by Swiss-Italian
composer Oscar Bianchi and his piece “Orango”. Bianchi invited the listeners to actively
engage as sound producers: He encouraged them to use their voices, every-day-objects
and modified instruments and enter into a dynamic and reciprocal dialogue with the
Ensemble Modern. He was supported by conductor Jonathan Stockhammer who repeat-
edly incited the audience to engage through onomatopoeic cheers and sounds.
In the second part of the night, British composer Philip Venables transformed the
Frankfurt LAB into a TV game show, and made the listeners become its candidates. His
provocative piece “The Gender Agenda” dissolved the barrier between audience and
artists in a satirical exploration that reversed the conventional concepts of gender.

Young German Philharmonics
The future elite of Berlin Philharmonics
In early 2018, the Young German Philharmonics embarked on a European tour entitled
“Wahn und Wirklichkeit” (“Delusion and Reality”) with a repertoire of classical French
compositions. One of the highlights of the tour through Germany, Italy, Slovenia and
Poland was the concert at the Berliner Philharmonie, which was also broadcasted live
on the internet as part of the house’s “Digital Concert Hall” online programme. The
performance and the entire one-week-tour were sponsored and promoted by the Aventis
Foundation.
The youth orchestra presented a programme of works oscillating between delusion and
reality, between the transcendent and the utterly human. Among these works were Oliv-
ier Messiaens’ “Les Offrandes oubliées”, conceived by the composer as a sort of musical
altar triptych, and Henri Dutilleux’s cello concerto “Tout un monde lointain”, inspired
by Baudelaire’s epic “Les Fleurs du Mal” and performed by distinguished British star
cellist Steven Isserlis. The second half of the performance featured the “Symphonie fan-
tastique” by composer Hector Belioz, in which he retraced the sentiments of his initially
unrequited affection for an actress. The work’s emotional plot and innovative deploy-
ment of formerly unheard instrumental techniques made it a pioneering piece of art and
one of the first pieces of programme music ever to be created.

Tanzplattform Rhein-Main
A borderline experience between dance and visual arts
In her hypnotic performance “Celestial Sorrow”, first performed in Germany at the
Künstlerhaus Mousonturm Frankfurt in mid-September 2018, choreographer Meg
Stuart explored the intersections of dance and visual arts. She guided her audience into
a vibrant and yet fragile world of light, movement and sound, creating imaginary and
invisible spaces of experience.
The performance was part of the third annual “Tanzfestival Rhein-Main”, that went
back to staging extraordinary contemporary dance productions in the cities of Darm-
stadt, Frankfurt and Wiesbaden. The programme elegantly bridged the gaps between
the local dance scene and internationally renowned choreographers, between profes-
sional dancers and amateur dance enthusiasts. The festival was hosted by the Tanzplat-
tform Rhein-Main in a long-term cooperation between the Mousonturm Frankfurt and
the Hessisches Staatsballett. The initiative is co-sponsored through a joint long-term
commitment of the Aventis Foundation and other Frankfurt-based foundations.
The Tanzplattform Rhein-Main was created to provide training in contemporary dance
and choreography, dance education, dance in schools and artistic research. It was
designed to promote the art of dance as a form of artistic expression and strengthen its
visibility in the entire Rhine-Main area.

Historisches Museum Frankfurt
Places of the youth
Where can you go out to dance in Frankfurt? Where do you really get to live adven-
tures? What’s the perfect spot for a first kiss? Inquisitions like these have provided the
material for the exhibition “Stadtlabor. Orte der Jugend” (“City Laboratory. Places of the
youth”), which was inaugurated in October 2018 at the Historic Museum in Frankfurt.
The exhibition serves as an analog complement to the museum’s online project “Stadtla-
bor Digital” – a web platform that collects audio features, films and photo series to doc-
ument the living environment of the Frankfurt youth. “Stadtlabor Digital” forms part
of the concept “Digitale Museumspraxis”, promoted through the Aventis Foundation’s
three-year-partnership with the museum, initiated in 2016.
Until April 2019, the exposition will continue to investigate where and how young peo-
ple in Frankfurt find and use their spaces. It encourages visitors of all ages to remember
their own adolescence and share their memories. There will also be workshops on how
to use digital technologies to portray these places of youth. Participants can contribute
their own experiences while being introduced to digital storytelling formats. Their con-
tributions will be included in the collective memory of the museum’s online platform.
This way, the exposition will be constantly updated while it lasts.

Jewish Museum Frankfurt
Open House in the new Jewish Museum
To celebrate its 30th anniversary in mid-November 2018, the Jewish Museum Frankfurt
invited the public to catch a glimpse into its future – right at its current museum con-
struction site. The creative and multi-faceted programme of the night, featuring exhibi-
tions of contemporary art, performances and guided tours through the construction site,
was sponsored by the Aventis Foundation. Visitors had the chance to explore the mod-
ern architecture, the plans for the future exhibition programme and many other interest-
ing topics evolving around the new Jewish Museum.
The Open House programme was designed as a reflection on the current transitional
state of the Jewish Museum, contextualising it in the Jewish history and present. The
event at the construction site was complemented by an exhibition of contemporary art
at the prestigious Rothschild Palais. The restored interiors of the historic palace accom-
modated an installation of enclosed fragments of memory and a sculpture that brought
old pieces of furniture into a fragile state of suspense. Both works addressed the topic
of personal memory and the fragility of the present. In several “Artist Talks”, visitors
could get in close contact with the artists and curators and engage with the architect of
the new museum building. The social media campaign “30 Jahre – 30 Geschichten” (“30
Years – 30 Stories”) was presented during a full-day symposium. The presentation of the
campaign initiated a dynamic discussion on the three decades of Jewish museology in
Europe and its future potentials and challenges.

Museum für Moderne Kunst Frankfurt
Students as artists and artists as cultural ambassadors
In early February 2018, the MMK Museum für Moderne Kunst Frankfurt presented a
performance staged in a pneumatic room installation at the TaunusTurm, developed in
an exciting collaboration between the students of a public high school in Frankfurt and
the Berlin-based artist collective “Plastique Fantastique”. The project was financed by
the Aventis Foundation as part of the art education programme “MMK Young Collabo-
rations”.
The performance was realised on the backdrop of the current exhibition “I am a prob-
lem” at MMK 2, which showcased international projects realised by the “Plastique
Fantastique” collective, such as spatial interventions at public places and a large-scale
sculpture custom-designed for the exhibition at TaunusTurm. The performance encour-
aged the students to reflect on the perception, use and design of public spaces and on
life in their city in general. In cooperation with the two founders of the collective, they
developed their very own spatial installation. They ended up creating a gigantic spatial
bubble and 40 meters of walkable tubes, occupying the entire floor of the TaunusTurm.
The artifacts were built in a five-day workshop instructed by the architects. In coopera-

Mahler Chamber Orchestra with George Benjamin
During the Musikfest Berlin in mid-September 2018, the Mahler Chamber Orchestra
performed the lyrical novella “Into the Little Hill” by George Benjamin at the chamber
music hall of the Berliner Philharmonie. Both the performance of the novella and the
semi-staged presentation of Benjamin’s opera “Written on Skin” in November 2018 were
sponsored by the Aventis Foundation. Benjamin had composed the opera for the Mahler
Chamber Orchestra in 2012 and joined the ensemble as director in both performances.
The performances are part of a project initiative by the Stiftung Berliner Philharmoniker,
which will organize seven concerts in 2018/19 to finally introduce the audiences in Ber-
lin to the broad artistic range of this contemporary British composer and director. Some
of the performances will be presented in cooperation with the Berliner Festspiele and
the Mahler Chamber Orchestra.
George Benjamin is one of the most important composers of our time. His outstanding
qualities as director are in high demand at renowned festivals and concert houses all
across Europe, and yet, until recently, his work has not been present in Berlin. These
performances will bring his extraordinary contemporary music to an audience that so
far has had little exposure to modern classical music.

Currentzis at the Berliner Philharmonie
In late October 2018, the Stiftung Berliner Philharmoniker presented the contemporary
choral opera “Trista” by Philippe Hersant at the chamber music hall. The work was
performed by the MusicAeterna orchestra and choir of the Perm State Opera under the
direction of charismatic star conductor Teodor Currentzis. The special concert was spon-
sored by the Aventis Foundation, just like another performance in early December 2018
in which the MusicAeterna ensemble and choir interpreted works by Gustav Mahler at
the great hall of the Philharmonie. With both these performances, the Stiftung Berliner
Philharmoniker wanted to present bold and daring musical interpretations and contrib-
ute to the current discussion on music formats. For several years now, Teodor Currentzis
has been representing a young and passionate type of artist who reaches and attracts
new audiences. With his unconditional, unaltered and very expressive way of interpret-
ing music, the Greak-Russian conductor, musician and actor stands for a classical music
genre that is evolving and constantly looking for ways to reinvent itself.
“Trista” goes back to a collaboration between Hersant and Currentzis and was first per-
formed in 2016 at the Ballett and Opera House in Perm, Russia, where the MusicAeterna
ensemble and choir reside. Now, in the almost intimate atmosphere and brilliant acous-
tic of the chamber music hall, Currentzis managed to create and sustain a captivating
suspense through a minimalistic deploy of instruments and the full vocal dynamic and
range of the choir.

When life meets itself
In mid-September 2018, the Berliner Ensemble and the Schauspiel Dortmund inaugurat-
ed the new theatre season with their ambitious synchronic performance of “Die Parallel-
welt” (“The Parallel World”). The piece was performed at the same time in two loca-
tions, on two identically designed sets, and connected through a live video broadcast
that enabled real-time interaction. The Aventis Foundation promoted this fascinating
project as the main sponsor for first performances and premiers at the Berliner Ensem-
ble.
The work was created by Kay Voges and Alexander Kerlin, the intendant and drama-
turg at Schauspiel Dortmund. It tells the story of a life that meets itself. Birth and death,
youth and age, love and loss faced each other in alienation in two settings in Berlin and
Dortmund, and where still deeply and inevitably connected.
In December 2018, the Berliner Ensemble also presented the premier of the work
“Wheeler” by Tracy Letts at the Kleine Haus. The Aventis Foundation promoted this
first German performance of the writer, actor and Pulitzer laureate who has a record of
dissecting modern American reality with his sharp and incorruptible perspective.

A festival for the young classical music scene
Two years ago, the Young North German Philharmonic Orchestra celebrated the first
edition of its summer festival at the prestigious premises of the former GDR radio sta-
tion at Funkhaus Nalepastrasse in Berlin. Now, in early 2018, the orchestra presented its
third summer festival under the new name of “Detect Classic Festival”, broadening its
approach to include numerous new ensembles and individual artists from classic and
electronic music, dance and performance. The Aventis Foundation has been supporting
the development of the format from the very beginning. By extending the duration of
the event from one to three festival days, the organisers tried to go beyond the confines
of established concert halls to win young audiences for classical music formats. This
approach challenged the participating musicians to reflect on their roles as modern
ambassadors of classical music and venture beyond the traditional limits of space, time,
audience and genre.
With two impressive studios, a beautiful ballet hall and the retro-stylish hobby, the
nostalgic premises of Berlin’s Funkhaus Nalepastrasse once again provided ideal condi-
tions for a diverse programme with over 400 artists. The Young North German Philhar-
monic Orchestra and other ensembles performed symphonies by Mahler, Beethoven and
Shostakovich. The interpretations playfully defied the traditional relationship between
orchestra and audience. Contemporary electro-acoustic music and experimental techno
and ambient acts created a vibrant connection between classical music and modern club
culture.

Festspiele Mecklenburg-Vorpommern
Time to listen
In late July 2018, the two-day music festival “2x Hören” (“Listen Twice”) was hosted at
Schloss Ulrischshusen as part of the Festspiele Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, sponsored
by the Aventis Foundation. The festival invited its listeners to really listen closely. The
innovative concert format focused on the act of listening and experiencing music itself.
It was based on the following hypothesis: listening to a piece of music twice makes you
experience it more intensively. A complementary moderation sensitised the listeners for
the attentive approach and carefully familiarised them with the individual works.
The programme focused on six concerts in two days, which, compared to regular fes-
tival formats, represents a rather small number of performances. However, this focus
made it possible to perform each piece of music in two very different interpretations.
Visitors could experience Shostakovich’s String Quartet No. 8 in a consecutive double
concert by two different ensembles. They first heard Bach’s “Kunst der Fuge” played on
a single piano and then performed by an entire ensemble spread across the room. They
listened to Mendelssohn’s last string quartet in a conventional concert setting, meticu-
lously studied and analysed the work in a listening workshop and then experienced it in
a completely different type of performance.

Experimental Concert Research
Measuring the experience of music
In late May 2018, the public was introduced to a new and innovative cultural research
project, aimed at converting the concert space into a research lab. Its main goal will be to
make a well-founded, scientific contribution to the ongoing and often heated debate on
the future of classical music concerts: The idea is to present identical classical music pro-
grammes under varying concert conditions, and to use scientific methods to analyse the
aesthetic experience of the audience. The project will be mainly sponsored by the Volk-
swagenstiftung, but the Aventis Foundation will sponsor the artistic part – the twelve
concert performances at the Radialsystem V and the Konzerthaus Berlin.
In each of these concerts, the exact same musical programme will be performed twice by
the exact same musicians. However, each of these performances will alter with regard
to certain formal and artistic aspects of presentation. Before and after each of these
performances, the listeners will be asked to answer detailed questions. To analyse their
aesthetic experience of the music, the researchers will measure their heart rate and skin
conductance and closely monitor their movements and emotional states. The measure-
ments from each night will be compared to the other results to explore the following and
many other questions: Which aspects of the performance affect the experience? What are
the different types of concert listeners? Which aspects of the performance predispose the
act of listening itself? How and to what extent do the artists and their audience interact?

Hoechst Award for University Teachers
Transport vessels for medically active ions
In 2018, the Hoechst Award for University Teachers was given to Max von Delius. The
annual research award is granted through a collaboration of the Aventis Foundation
and the German Chemical Industry Fund to support the academic work of outstanding
researchers.
Professor Max von Delius has been chairing the University of Ulm’s Institute for Organ-
ic Chemistry since May 2016. His research group studies complex chemical networks,
supramolecular architectures and the synthesis of organic functional materials. Among
his many achievements is the synthesis of infinitesimal transport cages for ions. To
produce them, he successfully created orthoester bonds in one single chemical step.
The vessels can structurally adapt to receive different types of “guests” and biodegrade
completely in water. This gives them the potential to transport ions through biological
membranes. Delius is determined to use them to produce secure transport vessels for
medically active, but toxic pharmaceutical substances that can be used in cancer treat-
ment.
The Hoechst Award for University Teachers focuses on projects in chemistry and bio-
chemistry. The financial resources are provided by the Aventis Foundation. The schol-
arship fund of the Chemical Industry Association will be responsible for selecting the
winners and hosting the award ceremonies.

Hoechst Scholarship for PhD Students
Synthesis of new cyclic peptides
The 2018 Hoechst scholarship for PhD students was given to Adrian Krzyzanowski for
his outstanding academic achievements in the fields of biology and chemistry. The an-
nual research scholarship is granted through a collaboration of the Aventis Foundation
and the scholarship fund of the Chemical Industry Association to support the academic
work of outstanding junior researchers.
In his doctoral thesis, supervised at the Max Planck Institute of Molecular Physiology
in Dortmund, Adrian Krzyzanowski works on the synthesis of new cyclic peptides. His
goal is to use them as modulators of protein-protein interactions, since common mod-
ulators are not suitable to cover the wide range of possible protein interactions. Cyclic
peptides, if cleverly designed, can combine the advantages of small molecules and
larger polypeptides to satisfy the requirements for strong and potent modulators. Recent
developments in the areas of organic synthesis and chemical informatics have made it
possible to further improve the membrane permeability and bio-stability of cyclic pep-
tides without compromising their high affinity and specificity. These new cyclic peptides
could be used to influence the epigenetic regulation of essential cell processes. Epigene-
tic regulation controls the transcription of genes and thus plays an important role in the
development of cancer and other pathogenic processes.

Raymond Barre Visiting Chair
Research on politics and economy
In 2018, Professor Dr. Jean-Philippe Platteau from the University of Namur, Belgium,
was appointed Raymond Barre Visiting Professor by the Economics department at
Goethe University Frankfurt. The Aventis Foundation has been sponsoring this academ-
ic exchange programme since 2011.
In 1994, Jean-Philippe Platteau founded the Centre de Recherche en Economie du Dével-
oppement (CRED) to research the relationship between political institutions and eco-
nomic development, focusing particularly on the development and influence of informal
institutions. HIs main goal is to study the relevance of factors like altering family struc-
tures, clan structures, the development of norms and traditions and their interaction
with official laws, as well as the interplay of religion and politics.
Thanks to the joint sponsoring efforts of the Aventis Foundation and the Franco-German
Society (DFG), the Goethe University can invite one renowned French scientist per year
to hold seminars and lectures at the campus in Frankfurt. Both students and teachers
are given the opportunity to gain insight on important current research projects, while
improving their skills in French technical terminology.

Goethe University Frankfurt
Complexity Fellowships
In 2018, the Forschungskolleg Humanwissenschaften at Frankfurt’s Goethe University
could finally start an international tender for its first series of “Complexity Fellowships”.
33 renowned scientists from in- and outside of Germany filed their applications. The
jury selected and invited five fellows from institutes and universities in Dusseldorf,
Washington, Montreal and Tel Aviv to participate in the interdisciplinary research
project “Complexity in science, culture and society”, initiated by the Forschungskolleg
Humanwissenschaften and sponsored by the Aventis Foundation through a sustainable
three-year-partnership.
Between April and October 2019, the fellows will spend three to seven months in
Frankfurt. Together with researchers from various scientific departments at Frankfurt’s
Goethe University, they will work at the Forschungskolleg Humanwissenschaften to de-
velop new ways to deal with the increasing complexity of life and to develop innovative
viable solutions. The project aims at establishing a theoretical foundation for the anal-
ysis of different concepts of complexity – to provide patterns for a pragmatic approach
to complexity and to gain new insight for academic research itself. The interdisciplinary
project represents a fruitful effort to connect natural and life sciences with humanities
and social sciences. The collaboration of all these researchers and additional guest
fellows aims at developing the project far enough to apply for substantial sponsorship
from a major research funding institution, so as to continue the work on a significantly
larger scale.

Deutschlandstipendien
Supporting scientific talent
In January 2018, the Provadis School of International Management and Technology
officially announced the new Deutschlandstipendium scholars in a festive ceremony at
Frankfurt Höchst industrial park. As one of the programme’s long-term partners, the
Aventis Foundation renewed its commitment to sponsor five scholarships per academic
year.
The Deutschlandstipendium scholarship programme was created by the German gov-
ernment in 2011 to support talented and high-achieving university students, honour
outstanding academic achievements and foster a new scholarship culture at the intersec-
tion of civic social involvement and government support. The programme encourages
alumni, businesses and foundations to support students by providing for half of their
monthly scholarship costs, the other half being borne by the German state. The scholar-
ships provides substantial support, appreciation and motivation to young researchers
from all over the world during their time at their respective university in Germany.
The Aventis Foundation supports the talents selected by the Provadis School so that they
can fully concentrate on their academic education. The selection process does of course
consider talent and outstanding academic achievements, but also rewards a strong social
and political commitment and the successful overcoming of social, familiar or personal
barriers. By collaborating with ambitious local projects and partners, the programme
also helps build solid professional networks that strengthen the Rhine-Main area as a
business location.
