Selections from the Museum's Collection: Modern and Contemporary Art is part of a series high-lighting the Museum’s exceptional holdings and showcasing works new to Houston audi-ences. This installation comprises major paint-ings and sculptures that span the early 20th cen-tury to the present. The fi rst gallery opens with the art of Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso, then moves to the Cubist avant-garde that fl owered in France, Germany, and the Czech Republic. Also featured are works by artists who pushed the limits of Abstraction, includ-ing Constantin Brancusi, Piet Mondrian, and Gerrit Rietveld.The second gallery is devoted to Surrealist masters working between the World Wars, such as Max Ernst, Joan Miró, and Yves Tan-guy. Postwar Abstraction is introduced with works by Anthony Caro, Lucio Fontana, Ells-worth Kelly, and others. The first check was presented to Scott Arthur representing Star of Hope Mission a check in the amount of $1000.00.

The second check was then presented to Miguel Cabrera - $5,000.00 to the Houston Concierge Association Endowment Scholarship Fund at the University of Houston Conrad N. Hilton School of Hotel & Restaurant Management. This check will be matched by the University and our total contribution since the fund was created is almost $25,000.00

HOUSTONThe Natural Science Museum has a lot of stuff. There are perma-nent collections of minerals,natural history exhibits, a plane-tarium with laser

shows and an Imax theater, a butterfly habitat, a paleon-tology exhibit with dinosaurs,and a new chemistry hall. This place is very crowded, especially on weekends, and you should call in advance for reservations for the Imax, planetarium and butterfly exhibit.

The Cockrell Butterfly Center at the Houston Museum of Natural Science is a stunning, living exhibit that showcases hundreds of live butterflies in a

naturalistic rainforest setting. The central conservatory is a dramatic three-story glass cone filled with tropical plants and exotic butterflies. During a typical visit, one can expect to see 50 to 60 different species of the world’s largest and most colorful butterfly species, flying through the balmy air, hovering over flowers or sipping fruit juice – and occasionally, landing on visitors!

Downtown Aquarium Sea creatures of every shape and size are on view at the Downtown Aquarium. The Sunken Temple exhibit reveals the wonders of ancient Mayan culture and the underwater world, while ajourney on the Shark Voyage gives you an intimate view of the ocean's most infamous predators.
