News from KeyRing self advocacy service
We hope you enjoyed our first newsletter. Across
North Yorkshire, we support people at so manymeetings that we sometimes forget how muchpeople have done.
This year self advocates;
Have taken part in many consultations
In Harrogate a group trained other people with a
learning disability about keeping safe Have all raised awareness of hate and mate crime
Set up peer support groups in Whitby andKnaresborough
In Selby and in Scarborough groups have worked with
other groups to make an easy read list of activities intheir area
In Northallerton, a group helped to write a “Know you
are safe” leaflet Groups have all talked about employment
opportunities, health and well being and promotedChanging Places toilets
In Selby and Northallerton, self advocates have carriedout leisure centre audits
We have helped to make the Community Trigger leaflet
easier to read and understand
For the last three years, Kirsty Morgan has
managed the self advocacy team in NorthYorkshire. Now Kirsty is working with InclusionNorth for the next 12 months. We all signed a card
which we presented to Kirsty to say thank you and
to wish her good luck in the future.

News from Hambleton and Richmondshire
We held a hate crime awareness day at NorthallertonTown Hall in October. The people who came along to
this event were really interested in what we weredoing.
Members of our group also gave out leaflets abouthate crime along the High Street in Northallerton.
This was information about what hate crime is andhow to report it.
In November, our group went to look around the Police
station in Harrogate. We wanted to do this aftertalking about how the CCTV works in our area.Everyone enjoyed seeing the different rooms at
the police station and talking to the police abouthow to report a crime.
Celestino who is a member of our group, went to the localGateway club with Kim who supports this group.They talked about self advocacy and said how this
helps people be more confident. Self advocacy isabout having the chance to talk about things thatare important to you.
Our group recently celebrated with Julie. She hastravelled to York and back independently and she is
feeling very proud!

News from Harrogate and Craven
In October, the Craven group visited the Police stationin Skipton. PCSO Helen Montgomery arranged thisvisit and the group were shown the different rooms.
They also practiced reporting a crime and had toanswer questions about themselves over the phone.
In November the group invited Horton Cafe tocome to the Settle group. These cafes are for
people who need extra support and offer daytime activities, for example, independent livingskills and healthy cooking.
In August, the Harrogate group worked with HelpingHands of Harrogate to make their complaintsbooklet easier to read and understand. Joanne
Martin told us how this had really helped peopleto understand how to make a complaint.
Christine Batty, the senior dental nurse from aspecialist dental surgery visited the group inHarrogate in October. She told us that if you need
extra support when you visit your dentist, theymight refer you to this service.
Christine Boxall from Carers Time Off came to tell usabout their service in November. Their volunteerscan sit with people who are cared for so that family
carers have time to do things they want to do.

News from Selby and District
In Hate crime awareness week, our group held a mate
crime and hate crime awareness session at Open
Arms in Selby. Everyone promised to tell oneperson about hate crime and mate crime and how
to report it.
We met with people at Kingfisher place in Selby,which is the service for people with complexneeds. We talked to them about hate crime and
mate crime. This group also made banners withtheir handprints to represent the Stop Hate logo.
A meeting was arranged with students and staffat the personalised learning hub in Selby. We areplanning to set up self advocacy sessions with
them next year.
We had a visit from the Street Triage team in Selby.They work with the police to support people who arehaving a mental health crisis. People who have amental health crisis might be feeling confused, have
a panic attack, want to hurt themselves or feelsuicidal.
If someone is having a mental health crisis,the team will talk to them and make sure they
are safe. They can take them to a place of
safety where they can get the support theyneed.

News from Scarborough/Whitby/Ryedale
One Saturday morning in October, we handed out
leaflets, posters and wristbands to shoppers,
shops and businesses in Scarborough towncentre. This was to raise awareness of hate andmate crime and the Mayor came to give his
support.
At our Scarborough Open Door group, Mark told us
that he went to the Safe Places meeting inNorthallerton. He said that the Safe Places scheme
will now start in April 2016.
William read out a poem about mate crime which
everyone enjoyed. It helped people to talk andthink about what they would do if this happens to
them.
The Community Mapping group has made a flyerto show what activities are available in the
Scarborough area. Our group now need to thinkabout the best way to share this information. Thiswill be something the group will talk about at ournext local area group.
The Whitby group are looking forward tomeeting Whitby Street Angels who arecoming to our meeting in December.

Other News
In Scorton, Nathan from our Agree Together group,
organised a coffee morning and raised over £330
for Cancer research.
The self advocacy consulting group in Harrogate
were given some money from the Learning DisabilityPartnership Board. This is to make a leaflet to findout if people know their rights and know how to
make a complaint.
First they need to find out if people want this leafletso they have made a list of questions. If you wouldlike a copy of this questionnaire, please [email protected]
KeyRing is a member of the charity Housingand Support Alliance which is going throughsome exciting changes.
Housing and Support Alliance is coming togetherwith the self-advocacy group, People FirstEngland to create Learning DisabilityEngland. Learning Disability England will
bring together the power of people with learningdisabilities, their families and organisations.
The next steps will be a consultation which startsat the beginning of December and ends in March

I am really proud to have been part of the selfadvocacy service. The experience, skills andinfluence of the self advocates has been inspiring.
Positive changes have taken place, confidencehas grown and voices are stronger. I wisheveryone well and look forward to hearing more

Although Kirsty has moved on Belinda is stepping up intothe role of manager and Kath Heat will support Belinda andthe team over the next year.
