This book of interviews is conceived as an introductory text to the field of Science andTechnology Studies (STS). Pinch guides readers through their first, but still in-depth,exploration of the fundamental concepts and debates in the field of STS, from its originsto its most recent developments. The text is aimed to students closer to the discipline, aswell as to researchers and scholars in all fields of study strongly influenced nowadays bySTS. The theoretical parts of the book are complemented by more historical andnarrative sections, which delineate the academic and intellectual context in which thefield took form, and what took place behind the scenes: from the death threats receivedupon publication of the book The Golem (in which the authors frontally attacked thetraditional notion of scientific truth and the theory of evolution), to the “science wars”with physicians and scientists.

Bainite in Steels (3rd edition)Theory and Practice By Harshad Kumar Dharamshi Hansraj Bhadeshia
A comprehensive treatise on the atomic mechanism of the bainite transformationin steels and how that affects its properties. Includes the story of the design ofsteels in which bainite plays a seminal role together with modern innovations thatwould not be possible without the structure.
Key Features:• Thorough survey about all aspects of bainite, including more than a thousand
references. Well-researched and consistent interpretation of the knowledge ofbainitic transformations and their consequences. Includes some of the mostexciting metallurgy of generic importance.
This is the third edition of the book, much expanded to include and incorporate importantdevelopments in the subject over the last fifteen years. The book represents acomprehensive treatise on all aspects of the bainite transformation, from thechoreography of atoms during the phase change to length scales that are typical ofengineering applications. The alloy design that emerges from this explains the role ofsolute additions, and the pernicious effects of impurities such as hydrogen. The picturepresented is self-consistent and therefore is able to guide the reader on the exploitation oftheory to the design of some of the most exciting steels, including the world’s first bulknanostructured metal.

Europe and CapitalismOpening Up the FutureBy Diego Fusaro
The current European Union is too often presented as the perfect realisation of aEurope of the people and freedom. The present essay overturns the common wayto understand this reality.
The current European Union is too often presented as the perfect realisation of a Europeof the people and freedom. The present essay overturns the common way to understandthis reality. A triumph of capitalism, which has now become absolute, the creation of theEuropean Union has in fact proceeded to destabilise the hegemony of the political. It haspaved the road to an irresistible cycle of privatisations and cuts to public spending, toforced precarisation of labour and to an ever-more sharp reduction of social rights, inflicting economic violence upon the subaltern and the most economically deprived. Forthis reason, the only way to re-imagine the future, to vindicate the people and work, andto continue the struggle that was Marx’s and Gramsci’s, is to move from a radicalcritique of finance and the Euro.

Prison Area, Independence ValleyAmerican Paradoxes in Political Life and Popular CultureBy Rob Kroes
A major voice in transnational American studies addresses politics and culture inpost-9/11 America
The study of prisons brought Tocqueville to America. For Rob Kroes, one of Europe'smost distinguished authorities on contemporary American culture, it was rather the otherway around. For Kroes, it was deep knowledge of American culture that brought himback to America and face to face with a couple of highway signs, Tocquevillian in theirportent, that invited motorists to exit from Interstate 80 in Nevada toward a place calledIndependence Valley and to keep their eyes open for a "Prison Area." In this collectionof essays, Kroes invites us to take these two signs seriously for their capacity to deepenour insights into America's cultural contradictions, especially how, after the September11, 2001, attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon, the US government'sresponse altered the meaning of America for Americans and Europeans alike. The author's fascination with the myriad ways in which America changes face, from hardpower to soft, from uses of force to the power of entertainment, but always holding theattention of publics across the globe, is what ties his work together. The essays heretouch on diverse topics such as photography ("Falling Man" and Holocaust imagery),music (in Broadway and Hollywood musicals), film (Django Unchained), Americanexceptionalism (in an interesting counter to dog-eared dogma), and the difficulties of thefirst "white president of color." Like his predecessors, Tocqueville and Johan Huizinga,Kroes offers a clear-eyed assessment of America on the ground, love it or hate it.
Rob Kroes is professor emeritus of American studies at the University of Amsterdam, now also honorary professor at the University of Utrecht. One of Europe’s leadingAmerican studies scholars, he is the author of numerous books and articles, includingPhotographic Memories: Private Pictures, Public Images, and American History.
This readable and sharp-penned critique of America and American culture and powerwill appeal to Americanists across a broad swath of disciplines.
