P07002: Project Background

• Currently deaf students use two methods of communication during office hours with professors or meetings with tutors

– Hand-written (20-30 words per minute)*

– Typing conversation (40-60 words per minute)*

P07002: Project Description

• Project goal is to develop device that will increase communication efficiency between deaf students, professors and tutors during office hours/tutoring sessions

• Market: Universities and Colleges that have a student body that encompasses deaf students

• Customers: Dr. DeBartolo and NTID

P07002: Risk Assessment

• Risk: Software– Need cross-platform programming language

• Solution: Use C++ along with QT design environment to develop GUI

– Saving conversations in format that is cross-platform• Solution: Use .pdf file format to store conversations

• Risk: Components– Is memory and storage adequate for device?

• Solution: Benchmark Linux specs on PC in lab to determine proper amount needed - 256Mb RAM, 1Gb Flash Memory

P07002: Risk Assessment

• Risk: Heat Dissipation– What is the required air circulation for the

device?• Solution: Experiments and analysis of device

components need air circulation of 1.205 ft3/min

• Risk: Power Supply– Internal power supply will result with large

case design• Solution: Must find external power supply that can

provide 5V/12V @ 10A

P07002: Current State of Design

• Software being developed

• Solidworks being used to model case design

• All components besides casing materials ordered– Only long lead item is LCD screen

(ETA 12/10/2006)

P07002: Current State of Design

• Test plan developed to ensure specs are met once design is complete

• Spent $979.00 of budget which leaves $221.00 for casing materials

• Design meets all engineering specs and customer needs except:– Internal power supply increases dimensions of casing

2.5in x 7in x 9.43in
