Grade 2 Field Trip to Fort Calgary

Our grade 2’s got to learn more about Calgary’s past and enjoyed dressing up in costumes, learning new languages, and handling artifacts as they learned about what makes different cultures unique. Students also got to work together to build a child-sized log cabin and then travel through the museum to further explore buildings and their materials.

February has gone by so quickly as kindergarten has been a very busy place of learning and enrichment! In Literacy and Language Arts, kindergarteners have continued to work in their letter booklets and on sight words. Students are focusing on letter sounds J, Z, W and V this month. Students are making progress in applying their knowledge of letter sounds to start sounding out words, setting the foundation of read-ing. In science, the Kindergarten classes have continued learning about our five senses of sight, smell, taste, touch and hearing. The students have done many exciting experi-ments as they learn further about this topic. In social studies, both kindergarten classes have continued to focus on their community. In celebrating Valentine’s Day, kinder-gartners focused on love and friendship within their school community and home community. Color words, number words to ten and measurement have been the focus of kindergarten mathematics in February. For 7 Habits, we concentrated on learning Habit 5: Seek First to Understand, Then to Be Understood in the month of February. The next habit of the month is Habit 6: Syner-gize, which means working together is better than working alone. The Kindergarten Team: Ms. Chidley and Ms. Kaur

For Literacy, we will be working on our third genre of writing. We will be looking at Narrative texts. Narrative texts either tell the reader a story or describes and comments on life, they

are usually fictional accounts.

For math, we will be focusing on our Number Sense unit. In this unit we will be focusing on money, fractions, multiplication and division strategies. With money students will learn how

to add and subtract money amounts up to 100 cents using skip counting strategies. In fractions, students will recognize equal parts of a whole as a fraction. Students will also learn

how to name fractions using words and numbers. In multiplication students will learn how to multiply by adding long sequences of the same number by skip counting. In division

students will learn how to divide items into equal groups.

For science, we will be focusing on our Exploring Liquids unit. In this unit students will be able to describe properties of water and other liquids and recognizing the importance of

water to living and nonliving things. As well, we will describe the interaction of water with different materials and apply that knowledge to practical problems.

For social studies, we are continuing to learn more about the people that live in Meteghan, Saskatoon and Iqaluit. We have expanded on a various traditions and celebrations that are

significant in each community. This term, students are to demonstrate an in depth understanding of traditions and the way of life in each community.

Literacy: For the month of February, students will be working on retelling important facts and ideas in a variety of texts. We will also be learning how to identify or categorize information according to sequence, similarities or differences. Long Vowel word lists will be sent home, please make sure to practice these words at home. Math: Students will continue to learn addition from 1-20. Students will refine their number sense from 1-100. We will be continuing on with word problems. Students will learn how to demonstrate their knowledge of word problems by using numbers, pictures and words. Science: We will continue to work on the five senses. The grade one classes will be going on a field trip to the Telus Spark during the month of March. Next, students will start to learn about the needs of plants and animals. Social: Our students have been very interested in learning about how stories and events of the past connect their families and communities to the present. Ms. Raeewal & Mrs. Kaur

In Literacy, we have done a wonderful job on our procedural writing including instructions, recipes and the scientific method. Now, we are busy

learning about the purpose and features of persuasive texts. We are enjoying coming up with creative ideas to convince and persuade! Next

month, we will focus on descriptive writing. We are continuing to engage in weekly spelling tests, text-talk vocabulary lessons, grammar les-

sons, working-with-word exercises and journal writing. We are reminded to read every day for at least 30 minutes and to practice our FRY

words. Keep up the wonderful efforts, grade threes.

In Math, we are working hard to finish our unit on Addition and Subtraction. We have learned a variety of helpful strategies to help us add and sub-

tract 2-digit and 3-digit numbers. We have worked with base-ten blocks to regroup. Our next unit will be Measurement.

In Social Studies, we have travelled to the exotic and interesting country of Tunisia. We are learning all about its geography, culture, religion, life-

style, goods, services and natural resources. We enjoyed a special presentation from Teacher’s Pet to introduce the unit.

In Science, we are having a lot of fun investigating materials and design. We are the Junior Khalsa Engineers and we are completing important

missions in order to learn about best methods of design. We have learned all about the strongest shapes, arches, pillars, cube constructions, con-

tainers and more. In a few weeks, we will begin our construction of bridges, animals and our very own playground. We cannot wait to get started!

Learning through hand-on exploration is the best. Please begin to collect empty cardboard containers at home.
