Grade 2 Seva project

This year the grade two’s participated in a “seva”, (community service) project. The students created Valentine’s Day cards as a thank you to the veterans for their service. By providing this community service students cultivated community involvement and a sense of pride in their community. This was a great oppor-tunity for students to get involved in, by growing a healthy, car-ing and responsible environment. Students were also able to gain knowledge on the important role that the veterans have played in our community.

February has gone by so quickly as kindergarten has been a very busy place of learning and enrichment!

In Literacy and Language Arts, kindergarten has continued to work in their letter booklets and sight words. The kin-dergartners are focusing on letter sounds J, Z,, W and V this month. The students are making progress in applying their knowledge of letter sounds to start sounding out words, setting the foundation of reading.

In science, the Kindergarten classes have continued learning about our five senses of sight, smell, taste, touch and hearing. The students have done many exciting experiments as they learn further about this topic.

In social studies, both kindergarten classes have continued to focus on their community. In celebrating Valentine’s Day, kindergarten focused on love and friendship within their school community and home community.

Color words, number words to ten and continuing with patterns have been the focus of kindergarten mathematics in February.

For 7 Habits, we concentrated on learning Habit 4: Think win-win in the month of February. The next habit of the month is Habit 5: Seek First to Understand, Then to Be Understood, which means you ask other people for help, learn from them, value their ideas, work well in a group and understand that working together is better than working lone.

The Kindergarten Team: Ms. Chidley and Ms. Kaur

For Literacy, we are going to focus on Narrative texts. This writing genre tells the reader a story or describes and comments on

life. These texts can be fictional, such as stories or nonfiction such as journals or diaries.

For Math, we are focusing on our Linear Measurement unit. We will be focusing on estimating, measuring, comparing, and describing height using multiple non –

standard units. Students will recognize that the measurements of a given dimension stays constant regardless of orientation. Students will learn that changing the

orientation of an object does not alter the measurements of its attributes.

For science, we are looking at Exploring Liquids. Students will learn how to compare water with one or more other liquids, such as cooking oil, glycerin or water

mixed with liquid detergent. Students will recognize different liquids based on characteristics, such as color, ease of flow, tendency of drops to form a ball shape

(bead), interactions with other liquids and interactions with solid materials.

Our concentration for Social Studies has been on looking at various communities within Canada. Students were to demonstrate an understanding of cultures in

Meteghan, Saskatoon and Iqaluit. In class, we focused on how these communities have evolved over time. We are looking at our second unit which is based on

looking at people. Students will learn to appreciate the diversity and vastness of Canada’s land and people.

Literacy: For the month of February, students worked on retelling important facts and ideas in a variety of texts. We also learned how to identify or catego-rize information according to sequence, similarities or differences. Long Vowel word lists will be sent home, please make sure to practice these words at

home. Math: Students will learn how to describe the characteristics of 3-D objects and 2-D shapes. We will be starting our measurement unit and students will be

using direct and indirect measurement to solve problems. We will continue on with addition and subtraction from 1-18 and solving word problems. Science: We will continue to work on the five senses. The grade one classes will be going on a field trip to the Telus Spark during the month of March. Next,

students will start to learn about the needs of plants and animals. Social: Our students are having an interesting time learning about how stories and events of the past connect their families and communities to the present.

In Literacy, we are continuing to work on our writing skills. Our sentences are becoming much more interesting

and creative. We are doing our best to include lots of details and colorful words. We are also learning how to describe set-

tings and characters. We are sharpening our skills in grammar and focusing on punctuation, different types of sentences, as

well as common, proper, singular and plural nouns. We will be starting on Narrative Texts. Narrative texts tell the reader a

story or describe and comment on life. The stories can be fictional accounts, such as stories and tales, or they can be non-

fictional, such as diaries and journals.

In math, we are focusing on our multiplication and division unit. In this unit students will be able to develop number sense

and represent algebraic expressions in multiple ways. Students will demonstrate an understanding by using personal strate-

gies for multiplying and dividing with and without the support of manipulatives.

In social studies, we will continue to explore Tunisia. Students are starting to appreciate similarities and differences among

people and communities and examine the social, cultural and linguistic characteristics that affect quality of life in communities

in Tunisia. We hope to experience the tastes and sounds of Tunisia on our travels, as well as explore its many different

landscapes.

In science, we will continue to work on testing materials and design unit. Students will be evaluating the suitability of different

materials and designs for their use in a building task as a company. We have already received many letters asking for help.

We will be asking parents to save building materials for the second half of the unit (i.e. toilet paper rolls, shoe boxes, con-

tainers, etc.)
