DiSciVery Day

Mathemagic Trail

Student Leadership Training

KCS held her 4th DiSciVery Day on 12 and 13 November. Besides interesting Science experiments, students also had fun learning about Computer Science and Environmental Science. Our STEAM booths intrigued our students in the applications of Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics skills in simple challenges. With the support our PSG and Alumni, Science was brought to life once again in KCS.

Student Leadership Training was conducted for our Key Student Leaders on 1 June. The P3 Trainee Prefects got to know their peers in the prefectorial board and participate in the leadership training. Besides learning about self-regulation of emotions, the students also learnt facilitation skills that later came in useful during their Learning for Life (LLP) projects.

As part of the school’s P2 English Language experiential learning programme, the students visited KidZania Singapore. They were engaged in a range of enriching and realistic role-play activities. As they did so, they were empowered to make decisions and attain life skills through play. The students had an enriching and fun experience.

The P2 students learnt about stamps and how they provide a window to the history of Singapore and the world at the Singapore Philatelic Museum. They had the chance to see actual stamps from around the world and understand the importance of the postal service in Singapore. This year, the students were given the rare opportunity to post their letters to their family, while they were at the museum. It was indeed a moment for them to remember.

P2 Learning Journeys

Girls’ Brigade Fast Food and Fuzz Camp

23 Cub Scouts from P3 to P5 participated in a 3-day camp at Sarimbun Scouts Camp from 1 to 3 September. It was a camp in the woods where the boys had to pitch tents and cook simple meals together with 3 other Cub Scout units, Special Needs scouts and secondary s c h o o l s c o u t s . T h e highlight of the camp was an Intermediate Challenge Rope course that led the boys to a “milo” pond upon completion. The boys also went into the nearby forest for a hike and spotted wild boars. It was indeed an eye-opener for our Cub Scouts.

The Primary 1 students visited the Jacob Ballas Children’s Garden. They had a great time learning about the diverse flora and fauna in Singapore. Through their interaction with the guides, the students were able to learn more about the importance of nature in their lives. The students left the children’s garden with deeper appreciation of their surroundings.

The Fast Food and Fuzz Camp was an experiential camp. The girls abstained from delicacies and experienced, through simulations, the harsh conditions children living in developing countries go through daily. The girls learnt to appreciate the things that they have and the people around them.

ERAS-APERA

Teachers’ Day

On 12 November, Miss Goh Ming Sze, Miss Priscilla Kek and Miss Alisa Chua were selected to present their paper on “Leveraging Thinking Routines to Enrich Classroom Discourse for a Deeper Understanding in Mathematics” at the ERAS – APERA International Conference 2018 at the National Institute of Education. The results from the research showed how thinking routines could provide a structure to help students scaffold their thinking and increase classroom discussions, as well as a deeper understanding of Mathematics.

The staff at KCS had a memorable Teachers’ Day Celebration. It began with an appreciation concert in school followed by a banquet lunch at Serangoon Garden Country Club. The vibrancy and camaraderie of the staff were evident in the elaborate and creative cartoon-themed costumes worn by all. These included The Incredibles, Ninja Turtles, Bob the Builder, Harry Potter and many more!

Adopting a fresh approach to Staff Learning Journey our teachers, including the Executive and Administrative Staff, embarked on Decentralised Staff Learning Journeys (DSLJ) on 22 June. Staff had the chance to visit their preferred organisation from a list of hosting organisations. Catering to the diverse needs and interests of the different staff segments, the DSLJ also provided staff with a platform to be cognisant of the skills and competencies required in different industries. This learning opportunity helped teachers to better prepare our students for the future workforce.

Decentralised Staff Learning Journeys

Staff Learning DayOn 19 November, KCS conducted our annual Staff Learning Day where teachers gathered to partake in rich professional learning and discourse with the aim to enhance staff capacity in teaching and learning. During the session, seven Professional Learning Teams presented their projects focusing largely on thinking routines. Our teachers also had an opportunity to be engaged in professional conversations on Singapore Teaching Practice, discussing how to increase our pupils’ motivation to learn and how to use questions to deepen our pupils’ learning.

Arts Fest

Prize-giving Day

KCS students took to the stage at the Singapore Conference Hall on 30 June. Six promising young artistic talents acted out a riveting story full of intrigue and adventure to introduce the various concert items. Our P1 and P2 students performed a variety of dances and our Performing Arts CCAs lived up to expectations with their wonderful performances. The evening ended with a rousing student rock band performance.

The theme for this year’s Prize-giving Day was ‘Making our dreams a reality’. As we recognised students for their excellent performance, we also congratulated both staff and parents who had walked the journey together to support them in their various endeavours.

ENHANCING OUR COMMUNITY

Values-in-ActionThe infusion of student voice into school activities in KCS has allowed for an integration of ideas and social action beyond the class and age groups. Many of our students have chosen to help the needy by organising donation drives within the school. Others chose to work with external agencies like orphanages and welfare homes. We look forward to seeing more of our students contributing to the community in future!

Children’s Day Celebrations

PSG Appreciation DayP1 Orientation

National Day CelebrationsChildren’s Day at KCS was a celebration of activities based on the theme of ‘Cartoon’. On 4 October, our teachers and PSG came together and organised a number of activities for the kids. The P5 and P6 students were treated to a LJ out of school to play futsal and bowl. In line with the celebration’s theme, our teachers, parent volunteers and students also came to school in their cartoon-themed costumes. It was indeed an exhilarating day for our students!

The morning of 10 November saw about 45 members of the PSG and their families striking a pose before they sent the bowling balls knocking the pins down in the games. The event was a hit and many smiles were seen on the faces of both parents and their children as they took part in friendly matches. We are truly thankful to the PSG for their selfless contributions to make the partnership journey possible in our school. The bowling cum appreciation lunch session was just a small way for us to show our gratitude for their unstinting support for our students in KCS. We thank you!

English Week

Innovation Day

EL Week was carried out in Term 3. This year’s theme was ‘English Attack’. The students were immersed in the English Language with fun-filled activities such as the inter-class Spelling Bee competition, Tongue Twister challenge and Grammar Quizzes on Kahoot. Adding colour and cheer to the week, the P1 and P2 students came dressed in costumes depicting their favourite book characters.

On 1 October, our students were introduced to the importance of empathy in Design Thinking at booths featuring makerspaces and getting inspired by projects from a Design Contest. During the school-based CCE lessons, students also interacted with various stakeholders in the school to come up with ideas for school improvement.

The annual Cyber Wellness Day was held on 31 July and 1 August. The theme for this year was ‘I’m a STARR - Safe and Responsible use of the Internet through Sense, Think and Act’. There were fun-filled activities for the P1 to P5 students. For the first time, the P4 students were given the opportunity to be Cyber Wellness Student Ambassadors leading in a discussion with P3 students about case studies related to cyberbullying. The P5 students participated in a Cyber Wellness Trail using iPads to heighten their awareness of various cyber wellness issues, mainly netiquette and cyberbullying.

Cyber Wellness Day

KCS Idol The 9th edition of the KCS Idol singing competition was held on the 13 November. 128 P6 students turned up for auditions and 7 were chosen to compete in the semi-finals. 4 of them were selected for the finals instead of 2. It was an intense competition as all the finalists were very talented. The KCS Idol title went to Loise Demonteverde from P6.4 who displayed strong vocal prowess throughout.

He acts on feedback constructively and takes steps to improve on his weaknesses. He has learnt to seek help when he is faced with any difficulty. He has overcome challenges that are obstructing his progress and has made remarkable improvement in his academic studies, especially English Language.

ENRICHING OUR CURRICULUM

Music Day Prefects’ InvestitureThe school prefects had their Prefects’ Investiture on 30 July. This was a day of pride and commitment for the student leaders. The newly appointed Head and Vice-Head Prefects led the Prefectorial EXCO team in the Investiture. It also gave them the opportunity to introduce the junior prefects-in-training as they joined their seniors in the recitation of the Prefects’ Pledge.

We commemorated Racial Harmony Day on 16 July. Many of our staff and students came dressed in various ethnic costumes. One of the highlights was the chapteh contest where our students, parents and teachers had the opportunity to show off their chapteh skills.
