he days of having to choose between high per-formance and fuel efficiency are long gone. With the current peak in gas prices, automobile man-ufacturers saw a need to finally combine these once opposite features. Since the inception of the

automobile, its manufacturers have quickly adapted their ma-chines to accommodate the ever-changing needs of consum-ers to ensure that they best complement the average consum-er’s lifestyle and needs.

Let’s Take A Step Into The Past: Before the First World War, automobiles were considered a luxury – owned by only the prosperous. After the Vintage Car Era, which immediately fol-lowed World War I, cars had proven to be more affordable. As a result of an increased labor supply available to work in facto-ries and machinery to encourage pioneers to make great ad-vancements in car development and production, attainability gave way to necessity for all.

During the Vintage Car Era, there was an upsurge in vehicle production, which can be attributed to many factors. The econ-omy was at an all time high, roads were being paved and vehi-cles were becoming more practical, convenient and affordable. Because cars were in great demand, more and more manufac-turers began building cars during this time. Components were built by a variety of manufacturers, making automotives more affordable and attainable to the general public.

The Vintage Car Era is recognized as being a period of great technology and development. This era is noted in automobile history for having the most radical stylistic and mechanical changes. These improvements include greater luxury, more comfort, increased horsepower and increased efficiency. Dur-ing this era, enclosed automotive bodies afforded more weath-er protection with operable windows and the body style was more flowing and rounded to promote better aerodynamics.

Adapting Once Again: In light of the current state of the econ-omy, the automotive industry is once again modifying their products to fit the needs of their consumers. The combination of the struggling economy and rising gas prices have forced consumers to turn towards smaller and more fuel efficient

cars. Fortunately, you no longer have to sacrifice style and speed for practicality. Auto manufacturers are leading us to the next milestone: Fast and Frugal, where the style of the past meets the eco-friendly designs of the future – which are better for both the environment and our pocketbook.

The following cars are among the first in this revolution. They all have the capability of going 0-60 mph in less than seven seconds and get excellent gas mileage. You can see cars like these and from all automotive eras in the Car Club Corral at the Coronado Speed Festival:

The Karma is a plug-in hybrid luxury sports car that can reach top speeds of 125 mph and go to 60 mph from a standstill in under six seconds. After the charged batteries deplete, it converts to its hybrid engines, switching between the gasoline and electric motors. Fisker estimates that the average Karma driver will only have the refuel once a year, provided driving is kept to under 50 miles per day. What will set the Fisker Karma apart from other hybrids is the offer of an option of installing a solar panel on the roof of the buyer’s house to charge the car completely off the grid.

The battery-powered Tesla, based on a modified Lotus Elise chassis, will hustle to 60 mph in less than four seconds, race to 130 mph and spin the meter for up to 220

miles between charges. As the only fully electric sports car, the Tesla Roadster gets approximately 135 mpg on a lithium ion battery. Even though it requires charging, a full charge can be reached in less than four hours: a small time commitment for a zero emissions, high-performance sports car. The ultimate in green driving, the Tesla Roadster represents the future.

Based on the popular Boxter, the Cayman is a mid-engine, rear-wheel drive sports car with performance that rivals Porsche’s flagship car, the 911 Carrera priced at $12,400 higher. Its 2.7 liter flat-6 engine allows it to reach an impres-sive 0-60 mph speed of only 5.8 seconds. Cars with similar performance ratings get a measly 10 mpg, but the Cayman surprisingly receives 26 miles to the gallon. The Cayman is possibly the best bang for your buck: relatively low priced and fuel-efficient with outstanding performance.

Similar to its predecessor the Miata, the Mazda MX-5 is a two-seater sports car with a traditional front-engine, rear-wheel drive layout. Mazda implements new Power-plant Frame technology, which minimizes flex. Because of its enhanced handling properties, the Mazda MX-5 is popular for amateur and stock racing in the U.S. At a curb weight of only 2,410 pounds, it is able to accelerate from 0-60 mph in only 6.5 seconds. Its light weight not only contributes to superior performance but also helps to save at the pump as well.

The petite MINI Cooper S is the higher-per-formance variant of an instantly recognizable icon. Its unique styling stands out among cookie-cutter compact cars, and for less money the Mini Cooper S can keep up with more expensive sports cars. It comes pow-ered by a turbocharged version of an already peppy four-cylinder engine, with an “over-boost” function that temporarily raises the torque under hard acceleration. Despite a top speed of 140 mph and a 0-60 mph time of 6.7 seconds, the MINI Cooper S gets an impressive 34 miles to the gallon with new BMW Efficient Dynamics fuel-saving

TenThe Game's Best Player Looks Forward to His Second Decade on TourBy Bob Harig

Tiger'she hairline under his Nike cap is receding, and the aches and painsfrom years of pounding golf balls are more apparent. It used to benothing for Tiger Woods to rip off a training run of several miles, then

do it again the next day. Now, he jokes about having to take time off.

Ah, Tiger is getting old.

He just turned 31 ... as if it matters.

Woods is coming off his 10th full season on the PGA Tour, one that hardly sug-gested any dropoff is imminent. And Woods, who won eight times in 2006,including two major championships, knows all about golf history and how it sug-gests he is likely to get even better — scary as that sounds.

“If you look at most of the guys’ careers, it looks like their peak years are in their30s,” he said. “Hopefully that will be the case for me. Hopefully my 30s will bebetter than my 20s. That would be neat to have happen.”

And it would be pretty amazing. Because the run Woods put together in his 20s has been surpassed by only six players in PGA Tour history during theirentire careers.

During his historic ‘06 season, he surpassed two of them — Billy Casper and ByronNelson — climbing to fifth on the all-time list with 54 victories. Only Sam Snead(82), Jack Nicklaus (73), Ben Hogan (64) and Arnold Palmer (62) have more.

His 12 major championships trail only Nicklaus’ 18.

“If I play the way I know I can play, I think I can get there,” Woods said. “But Ihave a lot of work ahead of me, and a lot of things I need to do to make myselfpeak at the right times and get all the things coming together.”

Home to one of the world’s greatest concentrations of automobilemanufacturer design studios, Los Angeles is consistently ahead of thenext trend, spawning ideas to help solve tomorrow’s challenges today. This century’s more eco-friendly vehicles are only the beginning oftransforming the future of driving into an environmental experience. For the third consecutive year, the Design Challenge has LosAngeles design studios shaping their vision of the future by creating avehicle that is environmentally aware of its global footprint. Nine par-ticipating studios are exploring this new futuristic frontier by imagininga time when all vehicles have technology allowing the public to enjoythe distinctive Southern California lifestyle and unique environmentwithout harming it.

Environmental Sustainability These multi-purpose, environmentally sustainable design entriesare as diverse as the beach, mountains and deserts that represent thegeographic diversity of LA. They include such design visions as thevehicle with interchangeable, fully recyclable body coverings, anotherwhich runs on pedal power and a vehicle with algae-filled panels thattransform harmful CO2 into pure oxygen.

Designers thrive on participating in the Design Challenge becauseit enables them to explore far-reaching, creative ideas in automotivedesign without any restrictions on them. The two-dimensional renderings were judged by a panel consistingof multi-discipline design professionals who selected a winner basedupon the following criteria: originality of creative concept, contributionto the environment, degree of safety and reflection of a unique, spiritedSouthern California “green” lifestyle. Bill Van Amburg of Calstart, Tom Matano of San Francisco’sAcademy of Art University, Imre Molner of Detroit’s College for CreativeStudies and Stewart Reed of Pasadena’s Art Center College of Designjudged the entries this year. “The environmental theme is very appropriate in creating aware-ness with consumers on automotive issues that are prevalent today,”says Chuck Pelly, director of Design Los Angeles and partner in TheDesign Academy, Inc. “We are happy to see that the LA-area studiosare using design as the tool to communicate unique and innovative ap-proaches to this challenge.” •••

Designers Envision Recyclable Components and Body Panels that Clean the Air

Volkswagen designers Patrick Faulwet-ter, Daniel Simon, and Ian Hilton have fastforwarded into the future with its space-age-looking Nanospyder concept, which isalso on the cutting edge of recyclability. TheNanospyder uses nanotechnology, creatinga vehicle capable of being assembled, disas-sembled and reassembled on a microscopiclevel. Billions of tiny nano-machines, nolarger than a half a millimeter in diameter, attach to one another in a large assemblytank. This method creates vehicles that areoptimized for strength, weight and safety toan unprecedented degree. The ability to vary the density of theframe allows designers to engineer safety“crumple zones.” Using sensor data, thenano-machines are able to sense impend-ing collisions and strengthen or weakentheir connection to each other to ensure thesurvival of its passengers.

Designers Andre Frey, Gorden Wagener,Nick Garfias, Jeffrey Aneiros and ChristopherRhoades combined wood, alloys, glass and rub-ber to create the ultimate recyclable Californiaroadster of the future. Powered by a four-cylinderBlu-Tec bio-diesel motor, the RECY’s open-airdesign helps take advantage of Los Angeles’weather and lifestyle. Constantly “recycling itself,” this high-strength frame and laminated wood shell allowsowners to easily replace damaged panels. TheRECY is 100 percent recyclable and after fiveyears can be taken to a recycling center to bereduced to its elemental materials. Fast, fun and fully recyclable, the RECY fromMercedes-Benz is for the ecologically mindedconsumer who demands a smart, elegant alter-native to the traditional roadster

Designers Leon Paz, Joe De Natale, andDavid Cheng felt that the Acura FCX 2020 LeMans was the perfect test bed for new materialdevelopment and clean energy that is ready toperform under the most extreme conditions. By utilizing molecular nanotechnology,a compact fuel cell can be made possible, thereby making vehicle packaging efficient.New strong, lightweight materials derived fromvarious sources are 100 percent recyclable. Thehydrogen fuel cell power plant tests its perfor-mance in the most grueling endurance race inthe world – the 24 Hours of Le Mans. The FCX is a notion of Acura’s commit-ment to a cleaner environment.

Designer Kevin J. Chun felt pedal poweris the solution to heavily congested LA trafficand designed Toyota’s Renewable LifestyleVehicle concept. This lightweight, aluminumbodied, two-seat tandem vehicle features aninnovative collapsible track system and a splitpowertrain solution that identifies with LA’smost used speeds – 5 or 75 mph. The manual/pedal mode used in heavy,stop-and-go traffic is also suitable forboardwalk, sidewalk and beach producingzero emissions while promoting LA’s fitnesslifestyle. The automatic/electric mode is usedat higher speeds with the track widening formore stability via a unique telescopic axle. The Toyota RLV is a specialized vehiclesolution improving the quality of life, whilepreserving the environment.

Designer Gary Shiu took recycling seriouslyand looked to the three “R’s” for inspiration onhis Mini Biomoke.

REUSE: From the hot-rodding culture to theresurgence of pre-fabricated homes, So. Cal’sinfluence encourages the BioMoke kit carformat, promoting interactivity with customiz-able body panels, alternative fuel powertrainsand the reuse of mechanical components fromprevious vehicles.

RECYCLE: The BioMoke’s body is constructedfrom a single sheet of biodegradable sandwichpaneling impregnated with palm tree seeds. As the BioMoke ends its five year lifecycle, itsbody composts to promote tree growth andclean the air.
