From our time with Robert Pereira earlier in the year we know that bullying is a complex social issue that does at times affect all schools in some way or another. We also know that the term bullying is often overused or used in the wrong context and that the nature of girl bullying and boy bullying is quite different. As a school we are committed to ensuring any issues that adversely affect students learning or wellbeing are managed effectively and as with so many other things e.g. reading, we are so much more effective when we work together with you at home. Encourage your child to report issues to you or to a trusted adult but also encourage them to be up standers. To not be part of the crowd and to be strong in their sense of right and wrong. Robert Pereira was clear in the parent session that a common mistake to make is that a whole lot of effort goes into shaping the behavior of the bully when we should be focusing just as much energy on those surrounding the situation and effectively supporting it with their lack of action. As I have stated before, as parents you can be proud of your children. When I compare our student population to other schools and places I know they are kind, thoughtful and caring. Our shared goal must now be to make them courageous. To instill a sense of social justice and fairness and as the adults in their life to model the acceptance of diversity in our ever changing world. The weather at this stage is looking poor, however it takes quite a bit to cancel cross country so keep an eye on the school app for an alert on the day in case of cancellation. A rather wet week, I am sure we are all looking forward to some sunshine. As you may be aware this week is National Anti-bullying week culminating in Pink Shirt day today.

Robert Pereira was clear in the parent session that a common mistake to make is that a whole lot of effort goes into shaping the behavior of the bully when we should be focusing just as much energy on those surrounding the situation and effectively supporting it with their

lack of action.

Thanks to the team for a long weekend at school and the creation of 3 entries into the 48 Hour Film Challenge. I look forward to the annual trip to Hoyts to see them on the big screen. I would like to particularly mention Ms Judson for her organisation and efforts with this.

Next Wednesday afternoon is our annual cross country event starting just after lunch break. The weather at this stage is looking poor, however it takes quite a bit to cancel cross country so keep an eye on the school app for an alert on the day in case of cancellation.

This week in assembly I awarded two Principals awards. The first to Catherine Paragas who flawlessly delivered a Mihi (introduction) in Te Reo Maori. This is a young lady who came to New Zealand speaking Tagalog making Maori her THIRD language! My second went to Tomas Mones-Cazon. Looking after yourself over the winter months is incredibly important for health, mood and wellbeing. We are going to identify FIVE tips in this Newsletter over the next coming weeks which can help keep you well.

#TIP 1.Keep HydratedOur bodies are largely made up of water, so it is important to drink enough for our body to function at its best. Remember to drink at least 8 glasses of water each day. Minimise drinking Tea and Coffee or drinks high in Sugar. Hot drinks such as warm milk or warm water flavoured with a small amount of honey and/or lemon are also a good way to warm up over winter, while keeping hydrated.

Another busy week for many of our senior students – the Year 13 Classics class spent time in Christchurch at the Teece Museum of Classical Antiquities on Monday where they had the rare opportunity to look at real Greek vases over 2500 years old , a group of Year 12 students this week successfully completed a 2 day Workplace Health and Safety Course held at Hurunui College which is a real benefit as they look toward full time employment and the 48 Hour Film Festival participants are reflecting on their weekend’s work.

Last Friday we took our available Year 12 & 13 students to the Careers Expo at Horncastle Arena – this is an opportunity for students to talk about and compare tertiary and/or other career options. The importance of prior research for careers or jobs can never be overstated - ongoing education is an investment and like investing money it needs to be done in a considered and well researched way. While there is a multitude of advice that can be given to students, one successful young NZ person’s comments have always sounded sensible to me “Don’t underestimate what you are capable of when you are young. If you see a problem, believe in yourself to be part of the solution. As to your career, don’t put too much pressure on yourself to make the right decision. Some people are lucky to know what they want to do at 15, while others still don’t know at 30, and others make numerous career changes

throughout their lives. Whichever path you choose, as long as you are challenging yourself and opening yourself to new experiences, you will be heading in the right direction”. I think that is very insightful advice that applies to learning at school and beyond.

Term 2 also has a busy assessment calender for students. The key to being well prepared for assessments is by focusing on time management which in all honesty is a challenge for most of us. We are recommending the use of personal study timetables, of which templates have been given to students, to plan out workload and to ensure the idea of ‘so much to do and so little time’ does not become a reality.

Next Wednesday beginning at 2.00pm we have our school cross country – all students are strongly encouraged to enter unless they are medically unable to. House points are on offer and the willingness to give it a go is a quality we want all our students to display.

The Year 10 & 11 Technology students are looking forward to their trip to Roden Cars up the Inland Road on Thursday. Mr Anink has established this valuable opportunity with Roden Cars to give the technology students a real insight into cutting edge technology in action, no doubt it will be one of the highlights of the programme for many of the students.
