Preparation• Year 10 students have FOUR HOURS per week for English
lessons. The vast majority of groups have two teachers, with a 2/2 split in terms of teacher time.
• The final SLD of this year will involve a mock exam under full exam conditions – either in the Sports Hall or in those rooms used by students with access arrangements.
• After school sessions will be run by individual teachers closer to the exams.
• Intervention groups and sessions will be in place for those felt to be in need of extra support, where possible.
• There will be a dedicated day of revision during the Spring Bank half-term (date tbc).

Vocabulary and Key Word Learning
Text Passages Problem Solving Skills
Fact Learning Motor Skills & Practical Skills
The Gummi Bear TheoryBlocked Learning:
Involves studying one topic very thoroughly before moving to
another topic.
Interleaved Learning: Students mix, or interleave, multiple subjects or topics while they study in
order to improve their learning. Compliments Spaced Practice
Music Maths(compliments mastery)
Problem Solving Skills(medical training)
Motor Skills Learning The Arts
Vocabulary and Key Word Learning
Concrete words are recalled better than abstractwords
Example: “button” v “bound”
This happens when controlling factors such as word frequency, length and meaningfulness
Students sometimes struggle to grasp overarching ideas in lessons
This could be helped by providing a greater number of concrete examples and explaining how they are linked to the idea
Scarcity Abstract concept in Geography
Difficult to understand
4 Months in Advance• Many seats available• No scarcity• Cheaper tickets!
Close to Departure:• Most seats sold• Scarcity!• Expensive tickets!
“Garfield, what is Antiar Poison?”
Lethal
Upas
Links to the concept that humans process verbal and non-verbal information in separate, related systems
Example: Something verbal can trigger a thought of something non-verbal and vice versa
Diagrams
A diagram may work well in the sciences or computing
Cartoon Strips
An storyboard or cartoon strip works well in performing arts or graphic design subjects
Students ask “how” and “why” questions Students then try to answer those questions This is compared to passive re-reading The process of trying to figure out the answer can
help learning
Self-explanation during study
Studying in groups with friends
Preparing as if to teach
Writing to consolidate
The practice of bringing information to mind
No revision aids!
Scaffold ideas and mind map first
Group 1:Create flash cards
Group 2:Use Group 1’s flash cards to help with information retrieval
