Read the part of speech and its definition from the Poster, then ask students to identify all the words in the sentences that are that part of speech. Provide students with the following simple abbreviations as a student correctly identifies each part of speech: n = noun v = verb pron = pronoun art = article conj = conjunction prep = preposition adj = adjective adv = adverb int = interjection After completing this exercise, be sure to explain that the same word may be a different part of speech in a different sentence, depending on how it is used. For example, rewrite the first sentence to read Cass and Joseph went to a play after school. Have students look at the word play in both sentences to identify one as a verb and one as a noun. Remind students to read the entire sentence to understand the meaning of the words before they begin to identify any of the parts of speech. For nouns, verbs, adjectives, or adverbs—of which there can be many—you can limit the discussion to a category of word, such as animals or food for nouns, or colors for adjectives, or to a unit of study. Post the charts around your room so that students can refer to the many words they know for the different parts of speech. Parts of Speech Hunt Have students use text around the classroom to learn to identify different parts of speech: Write the following simple abbreviations for the parts of speech on the classroom whiteboard: adj = adjective adv = adverb art = article conj = conjunction int = interjection n = noun prep = preposition pron = pronoun v = verb Students each take a sheet of paper and pencil and look for 10 different sentences that are displayed somewhere in the classroom. They write down each sentence on the paper, along with where in the room they saw the text. Read the firstsentence aloud while you hold up the sentence strip. Then choosea word from the sentence and ask the first students in line toidentify its part of speech. For example, if you read the sentenceKathy sauntered into the library to choose a good book, you mightask what part of speech is sauntered? The first student to givethe correct answer gets to move the ball one ball-length towardhis team’s goal. If neither student gives the correct answer, theyreturn to the end of their lines and it is the next two players turnas you read a new sentence strip. Play continues until one teamscores a goal.
