CLUB WELCOME

I welcome our sponsors, fans and volunteers to the game today and the 2019 season generally.

At last, match day is here! It has been a long pre-season, having started in the gym in November 2018. After building a strength base for the players, we graduated onto the turf and built up stamina in the group. For the past 6 weeks, the emphasis has been on building combinations, match fitness and giving everyone the opportunity to show me how much they want to be in today’s starting line-up.

We have built a young and dynamic squad that is has experience in key positions. The spine of the team in Pasfield, Littler, Stojcevski and Scott are all experienced players and I will be looking to them to lead the team. They are complimented by real speed and attacking threats in Takeru Okada, Thomas James and Harry Callahan. The majority of our squad

were bred on the South Coast. I believe that we have the personnel to go deep into the finals series this season. However, today is all about winning and taking the three points on offer.

To our fans, please come out and support us every home game and to any away games you can get to. We need to turn our home games into a trip other teams dread. We need you to be our ‘12th man’ so to speak.

I have really enjoyed the start of my coaching career with this group of players. They are respectful, good listeners and learners and have worked hard. I believe they will be a credit to our club this season.

MATCH PREVIEW

This 2019 opening round fixture pits Manly United against the home team, Wollongong Wolves at Albert Butler Park. Today’s match will be the thirty-first league meeting between the two sides since 1987. In the 2004/05 initial match when the Wolves rejoined the NSW Premier League following the demise of the National Soccer League, it was a scoreless draw between the two sides, the only time that this result has eventuated. Incidentally, there have been a total of ninety-five goals scored in league matches between the two sides with goals per game ratio of 3.16. Sit back and view this contest. Which team will emerge victorious? Will the goals flow or maybe a nil - nil stalemate occur one more time?

THE OPPOSITION TODAY - MANLY UNITED

Manly have strengthened their rotation with the addition of new players, by coach Paul Dee, including Adam Parkhouse who has returned from Wellington Phoenix, Charles Mendy from Marconi and Sam Gallagher to replace the departing Sasa Macura and Leigh Egger.

One honour amongst others that Manly United has achieved is the Premiership in the 1995 Super League when the Warringah Dolphins, a forerunner club achieved sixty points from seventeen wins, four score draws, one draw and four defeats with forty-eight and seventeen goals being scored and conceded. The biggest winning margin was three, 3-0 scores in Rounds 6, 12, 16, 18 and 21 with a 4-1 result in Round 14.

Seven wins and seven draws were Manly United’s 2018 campaign achievements coupled with eight defeats. The team scored thirty-three goals and conceded thirty-two with a plus one goal difference. In Rounds 1-11 Manly scored and conceded 17 and 19 goals with the Rounds 12-22 outcome being 16 and 13 in the same. Fewer goals were conceded in the second half of the season but one less scored. The goals per game average was 1.5 and the converse was 1.45. The top scorer was Dylan Macallister with eight with another eleven players plus an own goal, were the scoring contributors. Macalister’s strike rate was 0.36. Thee the team posted nil scores and four clean sheets were attained. The quickest goal was in the fifth minute of Round 1 by Nicola Taneski and four clean sheets eventuated. The biggest winning margin was four, a 5-1 win in Round 22 and the biggest loss margin was three, 0-3 in Round 2. Players who were selected in ‘Team

Of The Week’ Keiran Paull with four occurrences, followed by Brendan Cholakian (3), Alessi (2), Macallister (2), Lobb (2), Travis Oughtred (2) with Sasa Macura, Shaun Catlin and Domenic Ferguson with one apiece. A multi scorer in a single match was Macallister with a treble in Round 22. Cholakian was also named as a substitute in the ‘Team Of The Year’. In Rounds 1-11 the goal difference was minus two and in Rounds 12 - 22 it was plus three, an improvement. In the second eleven games, Manly scored one less goal and conceded six less than in the first eleven games.

From 2014, Manly United has concluded the seasons in 10th, 8th, 3rd 4th and in 2018 in 8th position. The team has dropped down following the Championship success in 2017.

THE MATCH-UP

For the last five matches between the two clubs honours are even with one win apiece together with three draws. The last two matches played have been draws. Manly leads with seven goals to six with each team scoring in all five matches. Overall since 1987, Manly leads with twelve wins to the Wolves’ ten and also leads in the scoring, fifty-two goals to forty-eight. Manly has kept the Wolves scoreless on four occasions while the reverse is eight times. The northern beaches team ‘s biggest score was 5-1 in 2006 with Richie Williams scoring from the spot, James Monie with a treble and Joey Schirripa getting the fifth. Adam Casey got onto the scoresheet for the Wolves. The Wolves hit six in two matches. It was 6-0 in 1987 with Randall Easthorpe and Robert Giraldi achieving a hat trick each and 6-1 in 2014, with Jordan Murray with a brace, with Peter Simonoski, Ricky Zucco, Matthew Bailey and Sam Matthews with Brendan Cholakian converting a penalty kick for a consolation goal.

PLAYERS TO WATCH

Brendan Cholakian has been a stalwart of Manly for a number of years and his guile in midfield, prodding and setting up play, is a pleasure to behold. He crops on the scoresheet with regularity in addition. Adam Parkhouse will attempt to set things rolling on his return to the club and his A-League experience will stand him in good stead. The Wolves’ new English born striker Thomas James will want to get onto the score sheet early as a confidence builder and if he can produce like he did at Canberra FC the crowd

will be in for a treat. Goalkeeper and club captain Justin Pasfield will be a standout in the goal frame endeavouring to keep a clean sheet.

BLAST FROM THE PAST

On Saturday night in 2012 Round 2 at John Crehan Park, the two sides met with Trevor Morgan and Craig Midgley being the incumbent coaches.

The home team consisted of Daniel Collison, Jack Keating, Jacob Timpano (Capt.), Michael Robinson, Samuel Jacob, Nick Littler, Chris Nathaniel, Mark Picciolini, Sasho Petrovski, Peter Simonoski and Sean Robertson. Joseph Savor, and Fabien Iacovelli replaced Timpano and Simonoski.

Manly’s team comprised Dylan Mitchell, Sean Bowden, Marc Richards, Michael Daly, Scott Balderson, Matthew Sim, Colin Iley, Jordan Edwards, Chris Payne, Leigh Egger and Damir Prodanovic. Mitchell Macedo, Daniel Grant and Justin Hayward came on for Sim, Edwards and Prodanovic.

The Wolves started well scoring only after seven minutes had elapsed. Seven minutes on another goal occurred. The first goal came through Petrovski. Mitchell palmed a Littler cross out and it fortuitously travelled to where Petrovski was standing in a central position. He duly headed the ball past the custodian. Simonoski added the second meeting a Robertson cross to strike the ball into the goal. Earlier in the match the speedy Balderson nearly goaled but Collison was three, diving at his feet to deny. The

custodian also had to dive at Hayward’s bootlaces to see off the danger. Both Picciolini and Petrovski had opportunities but these were spurned though Payne had plenty of chances at the opposite end but could not convert any at this time. In the second half, Sim produced an effort that Collison touched onto the post and later his one handed save kept Sim out again. Morgan –‘a little bit of luck helps. I’m pleased with our efforts. Our team toughed it out and it helps our self-belief that we can do that. Manly were trying awfully hard to get back into the game.’ Collison - ‘The boys were fantastic tonight. We knew Manly were going to come out strongly… It is always good to get a clean sheet.’

best season haul being fourteen in 2008. Indeed, his initial goals against the Wolves emanated with a brace in 2008 in Round 5. He scored two in a three minute period. He eluded two players with his shot eluding the custodian’s outstretched hand. With space to spare, Cattanach turned sharply to rocket his shot into the goal. Cattanach nearly became a Wolves player after coach John Turner had made an offer, but it never came to fruition. Cattanach was an adept scorer with speed and guile. Currently he plays for Canberra Olympic after moving from Cooma FC. He had previously played one match for Sydney FC in the A-League before

SELECTED REPRESENTATIVE OF BOTH CLUBS – GARY VAN EGMOND

Van Egmond, a defender was at Manly-Warringah for the 1986 NSW State League season after being a junior at the club in the late 1970’s and early 1980’s. He was at the Wolves for the 1996/97 season making twenty-one starting appearances. Van Egmond’s debut was in Round 2 versus Adelaide City with his final appearance being in the Round 26 Collingwood Warriors match on 20th April 1997. From Wollongong he went to Bonnyrigg White Eagles, Blacktown City before concluding his playing career at Manly Dolphins. He has since

coached Newcastle Jets in the A-League and at present is the assistant coach for the Matlldas.

WOLVES’ PAST PLAYER OF NOTE - CHAD BISHOP

The skilful Bishop played two short stints at the Wolves with two appearances initially in the 1998/99 National Soccer League with a further more five starting appearances with one as a replacement coming in the 2004/05 NSW Premier league season. Bishop’s initial game was in Round 19 versus Canberra Cosmos at Bruce Stadium on 8th February 1999 with his final game being in the Round 9 Sydney United encounter in 2005. In this match, he produced a sterling left footed shot in the ninth minute after exchanging passes with Craig Morton and provided an assist for Michael Clare to shoot only to strike the cross bar. Bishop was an adept crosser of the ball, with an early one in Round 28 Marconi game was threatening. He possessed a natural left foot, which provided power with his shots on goal.

THE WAY THEY PLAYED2018 CONTINUED

This is a continuation and completion detailing the 2018 players who had been selected into the Mens 1 ‘Team Of The Week ‘ for their performances on the field of play during the campaign.

ROUND 22 - NICK MONTGOMERY V MARCONI STALLIONS AT MARCONI STADIUM, BOSSLEY PARK.

Montgomery was an immense influence on the team’s performance in this encounter with all his vast experience coming to the fore. He harried the opposition, he set up attacks with great vision and had an impact with the goals that were scored. He was energetic with a high work rate, solid in the tackle and showed persistence in his display.

ROUND 22 – PETER SIMONOSKI V MARCONI STALLIONS AT MARCONI STADIUM, BOSSLEY PARK

Simonoski was very mobile in this game and explored the space when the opposition team threw men forward to leave holes in the defensive

set-up. He achieved a hat trick of goals with the first emanating in the fifteenth minute. At the far post (the one to the left of the custodian), Simonoski headed in following the prior work by Steve Hayes and Nick Montgomery. His second came on seventy-seven minutes. Following Chris Price and Brendan Griffin earlier involvement, Montgomery chipped the ball to Simonoski and he slotted the ball in. His treble was brought up four minutes later when Montgomery lifted the ball into Simonoski’s path and he subsequently played the ball over the head of Marconi custodian. Simonoski was extremely mobile and gave his supports options.

Simonoski stated post match - ‘It turned out well and I got lucky…towards the back of end of play they started to push players forward and gave me more space…. It was a good way to finish.’

BRING IT ON HOME2018 CONTINUED

These are the goals that were scored in the Round 22 match to complete the goals that were scored in the league and cup during 2018.

GOAL 25 – PETER SIMONOSKI - 15’ - IN ROUND 22 V MARCONI STALLIONS AT MARCONI STADIUM

Midfielder player Steve Hayes was to the right and forward of the penalty area to collect an attempted clearance from a central defender. He chested the ball down and controlled it with his foot before curling his right footed effort over to the far post. A defender tried to get it away by could not connect. The ball fell to Simonoski, who was behind the defender and he also chested it down and proceeded to slot the ball home with his right foot.

GOAL 26 – PETER SIMONOSKI - 77’ - IN ROUND 22 V MARCONI STALLIONS AT MARCONI STADIUM

An enterprising saunter down the left sideline by Brendan Griffin saw him propping to consider his

options momentarily. He quickly moved the ball inward for Simonoski, threading the ball in between two attendant defenders. Simonoski played off a square pass for Nick Montgomery, as the striker continued a forward run into the box. Montgomery lifted the ball into Simonoski’s path, subsequently chipping over the on rushing custodian from close vicinity for the ball to lodge high into the left side of the goal.

GOAL 27 - PETER SIMONOSKI - 83’ IN ROUND 22 V MARCONI STALLIONS AT MARCONI STALLIONS

Nick Montgomery was near the left sideline just inside the Marconi half after receiving the ball from Michael Stojanovski. With his right foot curled effort landing fortuitously for Simonoski. He allowed the ball to bounce a couple of times before he lifted over the head of the ‘keeper for the ball to project into the goal at the left side of the Marconi goalkeeper’s domain.

NEW BOYS IN TOWN

A number of new signings including returnees have been added to the squad for the Wollongong Wolves’ sixteenth campaign in NPL NSW competition. These players will add quality to the team in the club’s quest for honours.

HARRY CALLAHAN

Callahan has signed from the Illawarra Premier premiership-winning club Bulli and has followed his coach from the same club to the Wolves

eleven years after his 2018 coach, Matt Bailey did likewise as a player for the 2008 season. He is a quick player providing quality from wide positions. He also played in the match

against Central Coast Mariners on 5th October 2018 coming on in the forty-fifth minute for Brendan Griffin.

GUY KNIGHT

Knight is a defender that also played for Bulli in the Illawarra Premier League in 2018 and emerged as a premiership winner. He initially

played for his new club in the Central Coast Mariners friendly match coming on for Chris Price on fifty-four minutes to showcase his ability. Knight played as a junior at the club

and indeed played against the Wolves in the 2016 Round 6 FFA Cup match. He is not averse to taking the opportunity to shoot if in a favourable position and he just that when he latched onto the ball in the final two minutes, only for his attempt on this occasion to skirt wide.

THOMAS JAMES

A striker from Canberra continues the tradition of the well-known path that took past players such as

Steve Hayes, Dustin Wells and Ian Waldon from the nation’s capital

to the Wolves. James comes from the Canberra FC and he was the Golden Boot winner in the Capital Football competition amassing

nineteen goals from seventeen appearances.

Originally from England’s Boston United, James payed for his new club against the Central Coast Mariners in the late 2018 season friendly game, producing some shots on target that unfortunately did not bring any more kudos. James against Belconnen United FC scored a fantastic volley from distance in July 2018, and if he can emulate that for the Wolves, he will certainly take other teams by surprise.

NICK LITTLER

Littler is playing his second stint with the club in 2019 after first playing for the club from 2009 to 2012. From 2013 to 2018 he plied his trade with

Sutherland Sharks. In between he was in the Central Coast Mariners Youth squads in the 2011/12 and to 2012/13 seasons. Littler has been known to get on the score

sheet at times with the last league goal coming in the 2018 Round 22 Blacktown City match with the Sharks, after scoring six in the 2016 season and one each in 2015 and 2014. His last goal for the Wolves was in 2012, which was the third in his Wolves’ tally. He is a left sided defender or central defender which a solid clearance, with good aerial ability being strong in the tackle and a slick passer of the ball. While at the Sharks, in 2016, Littler made the NSW NPL ‘Team Of The Year’ and being his club’s second top scorer as a measure of his ability.

TAKERU OKADA

The Japanese midfielder played for Corrimal Rangers in 2018 before also playing against the Mariners, in a successful trial with the Wolves. A

shot from the attacking midfielder struck the post twenty-six minutes in and he won the ball many times in the midfield tussles. In his home country, he

turned out for Cerezo Osaka, a team that was also former Wolves’ striker of two seasons standing, Yuzo Tashiro’s J-League club. Okada is a slick player with a high work rate and will add his quality to the team.

LACHLAN SCOTT

This striker has returned to the club after plying his

NEW BOYS IN TOWN

trade with Western Sydney Wanderers for the past three seasons. While in Parramatta, Scott scored a total of five goals in the A-League competition and his experience should shine out for the Wolves. He has been the Wanderers Youth Player Of The Year and in the NSW NPL 2, he achieved a tally of fifteen goals from thirteen matches played. In the fixture against Wellington Phoenix, in the 2016 FFA Cup Round of 32 start, he garnered two goals. This was his first A-League appearance at this level. His initial A-League goal was versus Newcastle Jets was in his tenth game. With his penchant for scoring, he should get amongst the goals at his new club.

JAMES STOJCEVSKI

Stojcevski has returned to the Wolves after playing in Germany for FC Astoria Waldorff and Karlsruher and while in Europe turned out for a Macedonia Under 17’s national

team. The midfielder has a high work rate and has the ability

to get on the score sheet, which will greatly assist the team.

BEN TOSI

This is Tosi’s second Wolves stint after first playing in the 2017 season. He played six league games with one Cup appearance before a season

defining injury kept him out for the completion of the season. In

2018, he was at Bonnyrigg White Eagles who were ultimately relegated. He is midfielder with a high work

ethic, sets up supports with precision and is a

U20’S MATCH PREVIEW

Wollongong Wolves finished fifth in 2018, scraping into the finals ahead of Hakoah Sydney City East after an indifferent run of form at the end of the regular season. They were eliminated in the first week of the finals series, going down 3-0 to a Sydney United 58 side that finished just two points ahead of them on the ladder.

Their Round 1 match against Manly United is an opportunity for immediate improvement, after

losing 1-0 to the visitors in this fixture last year. Adam Griffith is tasked with improving Manly’s fortunes in 2019, after a ninth-placed finish in the previous season. Manly struggled to get off the ground early in 2018, and will be looking to start the new year with a bang in order to avoid slipping out of finals contention before the business end of the season.

FOOTBALL NSW ANNOUNCEMENTLANDMARK LIVE STREAMING SCHEDULE FOR NPL NSW

In a major boost for football fans, Football NSW today announced a landmark broadcast schedule for National Premier Leagues (NPL) competitions in NSW.

As part of a three-year production arrangement, NPL NSW fans will see an astonishing 445 matches broadcast, live and free across various platforms in 2019.

This will include all NPL NSW Men’s top tier matches, all NPL NSW Women’s and all NPL NSW Men’s U20 matches.

A “match of the round” from the NPL 2 NSW Men’s competition will also be shown.

Football NSW’s centrepiece matches including both the NPL NSW Men’s and Women’s Finals Series as well as the historic Waratah Cup Final will also be broadcast live for fans.

Fans will also be able to watch highlights and games on-demand via Football NSW’s NPL social media channels.

In addition to the live coverage, participating clubs, coaches and referees will also have access to vision both live and on-demand throughout the year for ongoing development and analysis.

Football NSW CEO Stuart Hodge was thrilled to announce the plans.

“This is fantastic news for football and our fans,” Hodge said.

“Over the past two seasons, we have seen the impact and growth of our live streamed matches and we are delighted to be able to further extend on that success in 2019”

“The broadcast of 445 NPL NSW live matches will be a game-changer for the sporting and commercial profile of the NPL competitions and our clubs.”

“Football NSW has continued to enhance our streaming capabilities over the past couple of years. Further growth in this area will harness the growing interest in the NPL competitions.”

“Never before has football viewing been more accessible. I’m excited that our top-tier competitions will be available to a worldwide audience.”

The live broadcast will commence with the Match of the Round in the opening NPL 2 NSW Men’s competition round as Blacktown Spartans take on Bonnyrigg White Eagles on Saturday 2nd of March while all 6 NPL NSW Men’s top tier and 20s matches will be streamed live on the 10th of March.

NPL SEASON LAUNCHEXCITING SEASON AHEAD

The National Premier Leagues NSW 2019 Season was launched by Football NSW at Ultra Football in Alexandria on Saturday where media and representatives from the NPL community attended.

A cocktail function for 120 guests with Master of Ceremonies and Fox Sports’ very own Adam Peacock took control of proceedings which also included representatives from all Football NSW National Premier League Clubs, FFA, Football NSW Board Members and Major Sponsors.

A player’s panel representing both top tier National Premier Leagues NSW Men’s and Women’s competitions took shape as Marconi Stallions coach Peter Tsekenis, Sydney FC’s rising young gun Luke Ivanovic, Sydney Olympic’s Spanish sensation Alejandro Sanchez, Football NSW Institute coach Leah Blayney, Sydney University’s W-League star Taren King and former Socceroo ace Scott Chipperfield who is now the Illawarra Stingrays coach all promoted the key role the NPL has played with the continual development of the world game in NSW.

The launch also played way to Football NSW announcing its landmark three-year live stream deal that will see all six NPL NSW Men’s and Women’s matches live streamed as well as a match of the round for the NPL 2 NSW Men’s competition on top of each of the NPL NSW Men’s 20’s matches.

Football NSW Chief Executive Officer Stuart Hodge stated that the event accomplished its intention in celebrating the launch of all National Premier Leagues NSW competitions.

“I’m thrilled to be able to enjoy the launch of this season with so many of those that champion this competition.

“The NPL in New South Wales is a very important part of the football landscape and player pathway in Australia and I know it will continue to strengthen with what will be a solid 2019 football season for all involved.

“Season launches are wonderful occasions to come together socially and catch up with old friends, and even adversaries, but in football terms they are a time for optimism, for positivity, for anticipation, for expectation and hopefulness for the coming season.

“It’s a great way to launch the year with our blockbuster live stream deal that will see us watch a plethora of football action each and every NPL weekend from both top tiers of our NPL as well as a match of the round in the NPL 2 NSW Men’s.

“I would like to wish all the clubs the best of luck as I know we will be treated to some fantastic football this year.”

Both the National Premier Leagues NSW Men’s and Women’s competitions commence on Sunday the 10th of March with some huge clashes that are sure to light up both leagues to kick off round 1 proceedings.

Sportswear giant MITRE will once again support the competition as the Official Ball of the NPL NSW Men’s and Women’s Competitions using the Delta Max for each of the respective matches this season.
