The Art of ScienceDo you enjoy doodling, drawing, sketching or painting? Do you have a passion for science? Using mixed media, you will explore and learn about the contributions of artists in the science world. In addition to recreating masters’ paintings to acquire new art skills, you will gain outstanding background knowledge in a plethora of scientific fields including biology, chemistry, physics, earth, and space science. Every session’s work culminates into a finished art portfolio at the end of the course. **A list of possible or suggested supplies will be provided for parents at least one week prior to the start of class. Awesome ASL American Sign Language is used by many people in the US and has become a very popular language to study in schools. ASL is a language of the hands, face and body, and is fun and easy to learn! In this camp, you will spend five days learning the basics of American Sign Language, including gestures, facial expressions, and the basic components of a sign. We will cover vocabulary such as family, colors, animals, sports, numbers, and fingerspelling as well as basic aspects of Deaf culture. By the end of camp, you will be able to introduce yourself and hold basic conversations in sign language. No special supplies needed. Online instruction via Zoom. Instructor: Emily Mellgren

The films from Walt Disney Studios offer more than just simple entertainment; they offer teachable moments about social issues and personal development. Come join us and learn how to evaluate some of the most famous Disney movies. In doing so, you will begin to understand deeper meaning in film by examining elements of context, theme, and character analysis. Film Analysis for Beginners: Lights, Camera, LEARN! Are you a movie buff? Do you want to learn about the deeper meanings of how and why movies make us feel the way they do? Then come take a dive into the fundamentals of film analysis! Learn the basics in terminology, production techniques, film sound, and cinematography by examining movies that cross various decades and genres. Each week, you will watch a specific movie on your own time, which will be rated between G and PG-13. Then, join the class for an interactive online conversation. Required: access to the assigned films (all movies will be available on Netflix, so a subscription might be convenient). Online instruction via Zoom. Fridoodle Dandy: Makerspace DelightIt is F! Time to start the weekend off with some fun. Do you enjoy making things with your hands? In this safe and relaxing social setting, you will have the opportunity to use found items around the house and recycled materials to design and construct inventions. Come learn about the scientific process behind inventions and engage in the process to construct their inventions. From Paper to the Stage: An Introduction to PlaywritingAre you a playwright? Do you want to master your play writing skills to create the most epic play ever? Or perhaps the funniest play ever? The most tragic? Whatever genre you pick, you will learn techniques and skills for creating multi-dimensional characters, clever plot lines, dialogue, stage directions, and more. Hear your play read out loud by your fellow classmates and receive weekly feedback. By the end of this course, you will have a polished play, ready to submit to play festivals or perhaps performed at your very own school. Look Both Ways: An Upper Elementary Adventure with Jason ReynoldsSometimes, the most fun occurs after school lets out. In his elementary- friendly book "Look Both Ways", Jason Reynolds conjures ten tales (one per block) about what happens after the dismissal bell rings, like, well, skateboarding, wiping out, braving up, executing complicated handshakes, planning an escape, and, perhaps most importantly, making jokes. With all the information online, it is becoming more difficult to decipher what is meaningful and trustworthy. How do you know what is fact and what is fake news? Why does misinformation on the internet look so convincing? In this class, you will learn what reliable information is, and how to look for it via basic search engines and open-access resources. Web DesignThe worlds of Web and visual arts collide in this cutting-edge introductory course. Learn to make your own website and how to take professional pictures and import them to your site. Explore the basics of color theory and make your website pop with dynamic animations created in HTML5 and CSS. Create anything from a basic web page to an innovative, artistic site with interactive functions. Then publish your vision online to share with friends, family, our summer web camps and the world to see! In order to publish your projects on free web space, you will need an e-mail account prior to the first day of class. Please remember to keep your password in a safe place. Young Paleontologists: Prehistoric Time TravelersAre you a fan of dinosaurs and are you ready to take it to the next level? Join peers in a fun, safe, and social setting as we travel back in time to uncover the history of dinosaurs. This course culminates to the creation of a grand-scale timeline filled with facts and drawings about the prehistoric lizards we uncover during our “time travels.” This course is also a great introduction to Greek and Latin root/prefixes which are commonly found in science context and helpful in building the vocabulary of growing readers. Use shapes, colors and techniques to produce your own unique finished Animé characters and put it all together to write and illustrate a graphic novel.

Its’s a Jungle Out There! Jump with us into this jungle adventure! Bring your best imagination and learn about the rainforest while you create animals, insects, reptiles, flowers, and much more! Learn new art techniques and create friendly sloths, toucans, snakes, and piranhas. Find inspiration in the rainforest habitat and its people while you hear about their customs and create a tree house collage. We will have a wild time creating fun art projects, making new friends and playing games! Note: this camp has an art kit needed, which is included in the price of the camp. The art kits are supplied by Abrakadoodle. Families will pick up the art kit the week before class begins at a central location to be determined.

Future ChefsAre you looking to develop, build upon and sharpen your culinary skills? Then Future Chefs is for you! Planned around a weekly theme, each class is an entirely new experience that incorporates culinary skills that build over time into more complex food preparation and presentation. Please note, if you participated in Future Chefs during our summer camps, there will be new recipes for this class. Middle School and High School Skills for Success with Don Milner

Don Milner returns with his very popular classes full of helpful hints and strategies to be a success in middle school and/or high school. Don Milner is a 18 year veteran Team Leader and Content Specialist. He has helped hundreds of students learn how to succeed in the SOS/Aggressive Learning Courses. Each class includes an optional parent’s session for free. His program has been awarded the Nancy Dworkin Award for Outstanding Service to Youth in Montgomery County.

SLAM the Exam If you are interested in applying to the Magnet middle or high school, then Students Learning to Achieve More (SLAM) on the Magnet is the course for you! This course is designed to give magnet school hopefuls a glimpse into the application process and ways to prep for the CogAT assessment. The application process is very competitive—approximately one out of nine students are accepted. You will learn what skills are needed to improve your performance, develop a study plan, including a test preparation calendar, leading up to the winter assessment and learn what to expect on exam day. registration link under the program area. Unless your student already has an M number and you have “claimed their account”, there will be a three–five business day delay as you must wait for an email with instructions. Check your spam/junk emails if you don’t see it within two business days or call 240-567-4151/4150. (Please check online for up-to-date registration information during COVID restrictions.)

3. Registrants will be enrolled in the order that registration and payments are received. Therefore, we urge you to register as early as possible to avoid disappointment. You will receive acknowledgment of registration. Please call Customer Service at 240-567-5188 if Registration Confirmation is NOT received at least five days before the start of classes. Classrooms and specific locations will be stated on this acknowledgement. Courses may be canceled due to low enrollment.

4. All students must register prior to attending class; do not attend class if you have not registered in advance. 5. Pending funding, partial scholarships may be available for Montgomery County students who demonstrate financial need or

Residency PolicyThe following are general guidelines taken from the College policy on residency for tuition purposes. A copy of the policy is available in the Montgomery College Catalog.A. Students attending Montgomery College will pay tuition according to their residency.B. To qualify for tuition purposes as a resident of the state of Maryland, legal domicile must have been maintained for a period not

less than three months prior to the first regularly scheduled class. Non-Maryland residents must pay an out-of-state fee ($25 per youth program course).

C. The domicile of a person registering in a noncredit course at Montgomery College shall be considered as a person’s permanent place of abode, where physical presence and possessions are maintained, and where he/she intends to remain indefinitely.

D. Non-U.S. citizens must submit copy of passport visa or permanent resident card.E. Non-Maryland residents and Non-U.S. citizens pay “Out-of-State” fees ($25 per youth program course).

Refund Policy: Youth Programs Only: Class Withdrawal/Drop Fees1. Youth Class withdrawal/drop request: Parents who wish to withdraw their child from a course will receive 100 percent refund if

written request is received at Montgomery College at least five business days prior to the start of the class. Requests to withdraw from a class received within the five business days prior to the start of class will be refunded 50% of the tuition and fees.

2. Requests for refunds may be completed by e-mailing the Youth Programs office at [email protected] or [email protected] or by calling 240-567-7264 or 240-567-7917. Please allow 3–4 weeks for refunds.

Contributions to the Youth Scholarship Fund You may take advantage of this easy way to make a tax-deductible contribution to the College’s Youth Scholarship Fund by writing an amount in the place provided on the Registration Form.
