KIDS TO THE RESCUE!
Everything starts out all right. Hundreds of thousands of adult puffins – seabirds recognized by their big, colorful beaks – gather each spring on the grassy cliffs of Vestmannaeyjar. This group of tiny islands is part of the larger island country of Iceland. The birds dig burrows into the cliffs, lay their eggs, and wait. So far so good.
About six weeks later, the young hatch. About six weeks after that, they seek open water. This is when the trouble starts. Still unable to fly well, many make it to the sea anyway. But others—hundreds each night for much of August—wander to the side of the cliffs away from open water, then head toward the bright lights of town.
No one is sure why the lights attract the pufflings, or young puffins. Perhaps they mistake the lights for starlight reflecting off water. Whatever the reason, the birds find themselves not in the Atlantic Ocean, but on pavement or grass, surrounded by houses and cars, dogs and cats, and people.
Not to worry. Nearly every child on Vestmannaeyjar is ready to help. In the nighttime, armed with flashlights and boxes, they round up the lost puffins. Sometimes children find them by following the sound of their flapping wings. “We find them in bushes, under cars – everywhere,” says Pall Rafnsson, 13.
Daylight finds the kids at the water’s edge, setting the birds free. “It’s why we do it,” says Asta Harfardottir, 10. “The sea is their home, and we want to help them get there.”
