A great day....

....or evening out for all the family! Overlooking thebeautiful Whitmore Bay, Barry Island Leisure Park has over30 rides and attractions for all ages.

Barry Island's Leisure Park, which featured in the BBCcomedy Gavin and Stacey, has been taken over by well-known funfair family, the Studts. Vernon Studt has spentthe last couple of months replacing old equipment andrides with new and exciting attractions for the whole family.

The Studt family came over from Bavaria in the 1800s andestablished themselves as horse dealers before movinginto the showground business. Jacob Studt came to Barryand opened a small fairground in Holton Road Barry. Latein the 1880s he opened one of the first fairgrounds on the

sands at Barry Island, which comprised of two smallroundabouts and a miniature railway. With such animpressive pedigree I am sure that Vernon Studt will makeBarry Island Leisure Park a worthy family attraction oncemore.

Many people now know about Barry Island, thanks to Gavinand Stacey, and this huge TV show has already attractedvisitors far and wide. With the Leisure Park now re-openedit’s set to be the place to be seen this summer.

The Leisure Park will be open everyday 12.30-8pm duringthe school holidays and weekends, weather permitting, and with easy access via road and rail and a lovely sandybeach just a minute away, you are guaranteed a fun filledday for the whole family!

‘What's Occurin’ in BarryIn Roman times farmsteads existed onthe site of Barry Castle and Biglis andthere were verbal reports of discoveryof a cemetery including lead coffinswith scallop-shell decoration. Both St.Baruc's Chapel and St. NicholasChurch have re-used Roman bricksand tiles incorporated in their buildingfabric. A Roman villa was discoveredin Llandough and in 1980 a Romanbuilding consisting of 22 rooms andcellars in four ranges around a centralcourtyard was excavated at Glan-y-môr and is believed to be a thirdcentury building associated with navalactivity.

The Vikings launched raids in the areaand Barry Island was known to be araider base in 1087. Flat Holm andSteep Holm islands in the BristolChannel have their name ‘Holm’ namederived from a Scandinavian word foran island in an estuary.

In recent years Barry has gained asomewhat dubious reputation, buthopefully with new developments andmany visitors, people will realise thatBarry has much to offer. Barry enjoyspanoramic views of the BristolChannel, and is close to the rural Vale.It is close enough to Cardiff to enjoy

the resources of the city, but withoutthe disadvantages of having to live inthe city. It is large enough to provideits residents with many facilitieslacking in some smaller communities. As well as leading High Street brandsBarry also retains a high percentage ofindependently owned retail shops andleisure attractions. From Children'sshops such as Smolannys, Ruckley's,Miss Holmes and the newly openedWish to gift shops, florists andboutiques such as Butterflies,Anastasia Beads, Bryls, andAspirations.

In recent years there has been a lot ofdevelopment in Barry. The waterfronthas already seen new housingdevelopments springing up and earlierthis year the Barry Consortiumunveiled plans to increase the numberof bars and restaurants and leisurefacilities too.

Of course Barry has seen its profileraised to new levels with the successof Gavin and Stacey. The newlyopened leisure park is certain to be ahit this summer and seasonedfavourites such as the Barry IslandQuasar all add to making Barry athoroughly entertaining town.

Using pop bottles, balloons, water and even the energyfrom breakfast, will the audience generate enough electricity to run the show?

Techniquest is celebrating the installation of a new digital projector in thePlanetarium. It means you can experience the stars as never before and learnabout the constellations, and some of the myths that surround them.

Café Quest serves refreshments, including hot meals at lunchtime, andTechniquest has its own shop with gadgets, gifts, and souvenirs, for all the family. If the weather's cold or wet you need never leave the building, but if the sun'sshining and you fancy a break, all the sights of Cardiff Bay are on the doorstep.

Bring Stories to life withEgmont PublishersEgmont Uk has designed a rangeof activity books featuring heatreactive ink. When the ink iswarmed up with a hand, the darkarea momentarily vanished toreveal hidden images, clues oranswers. The process uses aspecial thermochromic ink.

Each 24 page book features over45 games and activites tocomplete, helping to developchildren's numeracy, reading andproblem solving skills while theyhave fun with their favouritecharacters.

There are 4 in the series atpresent...

They are: The extremely popular

Waybuloo hidden pictures, featuringthe Piplings, The classic HitFavourites featuring: Thomas TheTank Engine, Bob The Builder,Fireman Sam, Barney and Pingu.Another firm kids favourite is theadventure Ben 10 and the now cultclassic The Mr. Men.

I have no doubt that these activitybooks are going to be the next musthave for children and I expect thatthe series will grow and grow. Ifound that even as a cynical adult, Icouldn't resist trying all the pages tosee what was hidden beneath.Egmont certainly knows how tocapture a child's imagination.

Over 60% of the worldlive their lives

bilingually. Thereare 6,912languages spokenin the world today(not includingKlingon). Welsh is

the third oldestlanguage spoken in

Europe. A greeting inWelsh was included in the 55 languages on the voyager GoldenResearch chosen to represent Earth when it was launched by NASA in1977 and has just left the Solar system to travel the stars.Linguists have shown that being bi-lingual can give people a head startby learning another language you and your children will be enhancingyour mental abilities. Being bi-lingual makes it easier to learn otherlanguages. But……we don't speak WelshNeither do the parents of most of the children in the majority of bi-lingualschools in Wales, and you'll find that most of the children come fromEnglish-speaking homes - and they're doing just fine.Even if you don't speak Welsh, your attitude towards the language canmake a world of difference. You can still encourage and praise your child's Welsh - ask them to sing

the new song they learned today; watch his/herfavourite children's programme on S4C - and askthem to tell you something about them. You mayjust pick up some Welsh yourself!…what about their EnglishThere's no need to worry. If you look at examresults in Wales - even for English language andliterature - those in bi-lingual schools areconsistently better than the national average. It's been shown that children in bi-lingualschools develop their writing skills moreeffectively than children in English mediumschools.By the time your child leaves school, they'll be fully bi-lingual and be able tofollow college or university courses ineither or both languages.…won't they be confusedLearning languages - even onelanguage - can be a confusingbusiness for children. It's quitenormal to hear small children say funny things like "mouses", "himscar", and "I goed". By trying out words, children work out the rules andfind out about how languages work. The same sort of thing happens with two languages. Sometimes smallchildren will use the two languages in the same sentence, and say

things like "mine'sthe beic melyn",and "daddy'sreado'rnewspaper". It's anormal stage of bi-lingual developmentand will pass - itdoesn't mean thatthey can't speakeither languageproperly. Like anyother aspect oflearning alanguage, childrenvery quicklycategorise wordsand meanings inthe right place. Thewords may bemixed up, but yourchild certainly isn't!…what about homework? You can help your child with their homework and by making sure thatthey’re given the time and a place to do it by themselves. They'll beable to tell you about their work in English, and then do it in Welsh. That's not a problem - it could well make it easier for them tounderstand the subject.

How to do ‘Kakuro’ Puzzles

Kakuro

Kakuro

Kakuro are similar to crosswords in that there are black cells andwhite cells. In some of the black cells you will find little numberswhich refer to the "run" of cells adjacent to them, either across ordown. These little numbers are your clues and are the total to whichthe numbers you will put into each "run" should add up to. Youmust fill each run with numbers from 1 to 9, using each number nomore than once in each run. For example, if the total of a run mustbe 4, you cannot use 2+2, but must use 3+1. Use logic to workout the order in which you must write in the numbers so that all theruns are correct. Kakuro puzzles are a little complicated to explain, but if you have a go you will be able to work it out!

Commenting on a recent Nationwide House Price Index, Simon Rubinsohn,

RICS chief economist said:

“The latest data from Nationwide shows house prices edged up by just 0.1 per cent in June. This the smallest monthly gain since February 2010, when prices on this series dropped by 0.9 per cent, and before that, from April last year. The flatter trend in prices which now appears to be emerging is consistent with evidence that fresh supply onto the market is beginning to outstrip new buyer enquiries. Indeed, the

decision to abolish HIPs is likely to encourage an increase in new

RICS Report: House Prices Edge Up In Juneinstructions to estate agents if the results of the latest RICS survey are anything to go by; according to this, the supply of property onto the market is expected to rise by around 15 per cent.”

“With Nationwide numbers suggesting house prices on average across the country are now less that 8 per cent away from the all-time high (in London they are just over 4 per cent away from the peak), it is no bad thing the price picture appears to be stabilising. The more important issue for the market is whether this is accompanied by a pick-up in transaction activity. The increase in choice for purchasers as more property comes to the market is a healthy development which, in conjunction with the stamp duty holiday for first-time buyers, could see sales volumes increase a little from current disappointing levels. However, with mortgage finance still being heavily rationed and consumer confidence slipping in the wake of the tough budget, it would be wrong to expect turnover to rise markedly over the balance of this year.”

There is city living and then there is Quayside living at Bellway’s new development at Mermaid Quay. Think stylish contemporary space - Think the understated chic lifestyle of Mermaid Quay. Think heart of Cardiff Bay. This is a place where you can watch the sun going down at your restaurant table overlooking the bay, where a cosmopolitan choice of cuisine, cafes and wine bars is on the menu. Catch some live jazz with a drink after work – at Quayside you just happen to have the Wales Millennium Centre, Cardiff’s iconic landmark with its lunchtime and evening concerts, as well as performances from classical music to modern dance, on your doorstep. Even catching a cab into town takes on a new meaning because at Quayside you could go by road, or take a water taxi into town! At Quayside you’ll find everything from galleries promoting the best of Welsh and international contemporary art to traditional pubs in nearby Mount Stuart Square, and, of course, city centre shopping all in easy reach. There’s a science discovery centre, Techniquest, not to mention 8 miles of waterfront, and a freshwater lake to explore – while boats run to and from Mermaid Quay, the City and Cardiff Bay’s Barrage at Penarth.

Nearly three quarters of Welsh Chartered Surveyors believe that raising capital gains tax will deter much needed new investment in the property market, according to the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) in Wales.

As part of its emergency budget submission, the professional body is calling on the Government to introduce taper relief* based on the length of time buy-to-let investments have been owned.

A total of 77 percent of surveyors in Wales believed that raising CGT would discourage buy-to-let investors in the private rented sector, the third highest ranking region in the UK. Only 15 percent of surveyors disagreed with eight percent still unsure.

RICS has also called on the Government to ensure that public sector asset cuts are strategic, sustainable and focused, avoiding a damaging “slash and burn” approach.

RICS Emergency Budget Submission:Capital Gains Tax Will Deter New Investors

Key recommendations include:

• The Government must recognise the lead-in times for change in property, and focus on a strategic plan for major, sustainable running-cost savings, while using market intelligence to seize disposal opportunities

• Continue mapping the total public sector estate to identify and eradicate surplus properties and inefficient space usage.Accelerate the development and recognition of asset management skills across government, with professional body and private sector help.

We can only hope that the government will take note.

Beautiful South once sang, “This could be Rotterdam or anywhere”.Well the way shopping centres attract soulless chains of restaurants, fast food outlets, and High Street brands you could sometimes be forgiven for not knowing which city you were in. What makes Cardiff different to say, Bristol, is that we still have independent shops and restaurants.

We are fortunate that St. David’s 2 shopping centre has room for an independent restaurant: ‘Sale Pepe - the Italian Kitchen and Bar’. Owner Simon Kealy (also of ‘The Old Post Office’ restaurant in St. Fagan’s) has opened recently, a haven against the ubiquitous chains. The restaurant uses local, seasonal produce in their risottos, pasta and pizza dishes. A good example of “from field to fork” policies that reduces the food-miles and helps strengthen the local economy.

Simon trained as a chef in Italy so in addition to the ‘usual suspects’ he’s also included dishes from the Marche region, no fake accents and dodgy moustaches here for that, “Justa like a mamma use

to make” experience. Italian cuisine has a long tradition of superb vegetarian dishes so ‘veggies’ can also eat here with a clear conscience.

Popping in for a quick bite or leisurely “people watch” isn’t a problem as the opening hours are Monday to Sunday, 9.30am to 10pm. The portions are deliciously satisfying and the prices are reasonable

(starters £3.80, main dishes £8-£16 and the mouth watering desserts £5). As you would expect the wine list is predominantly Italian.

The staff are very friendly and allowed you to take your time and enjoy the food and ambience. I hate it when the staff look bored and uninterested, as if they would rather be elsewhere. It’s never a good advertisement for the quality of the meal. Fortunately, Simon seems to have got the balance right with his team and eating here is an enjoyable experience.

As an antidote to the hustle and bustle of life or the “shop till you drop” visitors to St. David’s 2, I would recommend going to Sale Pepe. Good food, reasonably priced, Simon and his team are making a difference to the quality of life and making the “world of shopping experience” a much more palatable experience.

Leona Lewis the biggest British pop star of recent years, winner of The X Factor in 2007 and first female British artist in years to conquer America and the world with a six-million-selling debut album will be Live at the CIA in Cardiff on Monday 5th July.

A striking young woman with a strong vocal resemblance to the young Whitney Houston and a large mop of blonde corkscrew curls, Leona was born and raised in the Islington area of North London, she won a talent show at the age of 13 and devoted herself to music thereafter, eventually graduating from the prestigious BRIT School for Performing Arts and Technology.

While working as a receptionist and pizza waitress and writing her own material, Lewis auditioned for The X Factor in the summer of 2006 and won by a landslide. Her debut single, a soulful cover of Kelly Clarkson’s ‘A Moment Like This’ was the number one single in the U.K. at the turn of the year, including the coveted ‘Christmas number one.’

Along with her TV-driven U.K. success, Leona signed an American recording deal with Clive Davis’ J Records in February 2007. By the end of the year, she had launched her debut album, Spirit, in England, and watched it go to the top of the charts (along with the single ‘Bleeding Love’). The American release followed in 2008, and with similar success; it reached the top of the Billboard 200 and received a Grammy nomination for Best Pop Album. An impressive CV, for someone from a reality show.

But what is Leona Lewis really like? The public perception of Leona is quiet, shy and unassuming. But how accurate is this opinion?

Living The Dream

Editor: “Do the public know the real you? Are you shy?”

Leona: “I definitely keep myself secret, I went on a show watched by millions of people, so this might sound ridiculous, but I had no desire to be famous, and I still don’t. I have this media persona – ‘She’s a shy girl, really nice’ – but you can’t get to know someone like that. Unless you talk to me every day, you’re not really going get a sense of me.”

Ed: “Recent press reports say that you are a bit of a diva. Are

you?”

Leona: “I don’t think I’m demanding!”

she says. “I think it’s okay to ask how you want your food cooked (being that she’s vegetarian). People just dramatise everything.”

Ed: “You are extremely active in animal welfare, and you really take a stand on animal rights, you recently turned down a Harrods promotion.”

Leona: “They sell fur, which I think is disgusting! I’d never do anything that goes against my beliefs, I’m very passionate about animals. I just think it’s the fact that they can’t speak for themselves.”

Ed: “Your second album, Echo, features many tracks where you are either recovering from a broken heart or otherwise battling against adversity. You came from a stable, supportive home, went to stage school to learn your craft, so where does all the heartache come from?”

Leona: “I’m a positive person, but I’m very, very sensitive. Maybe over-sensitive. I cry in movies, reading books, anything to do with death, just people going through traumatic experiences, anything to do with animals will set me off. There are certain songs I can’t go near. I can’t sing The Wind Beneath My Wings, I can’t even hear it without wanting to bawl.”

Ed: “It has been rumoured that you are working with Stella McCartney to produce a fashion range, will we see a dramatic change of image in the near future?”

I love Barry Island, I used to come down every weekend as a child, I love the pleasure park but my favourite is Barry Island Quasar.”

Page 47: Kidzlife Magazine

CELEB FEATURE

Leona: “I still love my big ballgowns with a kind of twist to them, but I also like Vivienne Westwood because she’s kind of punky and does really nice shapes for ladies. I like Antonio Berardi because I like his shapes too. I like Stella McCartney because she’s got a vegetarian range. It would be great to create vegan clothing and accessories.”

Ed: “I understand that you have quite a fondness for Wales, particularly Barry; What did you like best?”

Leona: “Yes I love Barry island, I used to come down every weekend as a child, I love the pleasure park but my favourite is Barry Island Quasar.”

Ed: “I have to ask about Simon Cowell, is he still as involved with your career, and is he happy with the results so far?”

Leona: “Well, I’m very fiery and very passionate. We don’t argue, we debate. He really respects people who know what they want. We’re more alike than you might think.”

It may be hard to equate the friendly, gentle Miss Lewis with TVs Mr Nasty, but then, as Leona keeps insisting, “people don’t really know me at all.”

Baseline Physiotherapy is a company that thrives on perfection and specialises in sport injuries and performance. At Baseline Physiotherapy we believe that ‘prevention is better than cure’

Baseline Physiotherapy are pleased to announce the opening of their Sport and Exercise Medicine Clinic based within Elite Fitness, Cardiff.

We have created a service dedicated to identifying an individual’s potential physical and functional problems that enables us to implement tailored Performance Profile Pathways to help minimise injury risk and maximise performance.

For as long as there has been physiotherapy, there has been the general misconception that it is purely a reactive service aimed at working with people who have aches and pains, with the intent to help restore normal function and movement, whilst minimising pain. Whereas this is, in essence, an essential component role of the physiotherapist, it can be significantly outweighed by its role, and potential, as a preventative and performance profiling screening service.

Baseline Physiotherapy work in direct partnership with expert Strength and Conditioning Coaches at Elite Fitness, which allows for a collaborative musculoskeletal assessment that focuses on analysing movement and an individual’s functional capabilities. With a carefully planned and implemented format, individuals are taken through a series of movements designed to highlight physical restrictions and muscular imbalances. Once identified, specific training and physiotherapy programmes are designed to suit the unique needs of a given individual. OUT & ABOUT

The Prime Of Miss Jean BrodieMoving away from the age of swords to the more sedate setting of an Edinburgh School for girls

in the 1930’s we have at last the DVD release in the UK for the first time of the 1968 Oscar winning ‘The Prime Of Miss Jean Brodie’. Acorn Media’s August release sees Maggie Smith in her most famous role as the inspirational teacher who leaves an indelible impression on the hearts and minds of

the girls she moulds into the ‘crème de la crème’ of the Marcia Blaine Academy whilst simultaneously dealing with the romantic entanglements with male teachers that she faces in her prime. This is a truly

exceptional film from director Ronald Neame who died recently at age 99.

DVD Reviewsby Alan Mount

An Embarrassment Of Riches As I have mentioned before in my review column there is no greater supporter of

classic British TV of the past than Network DVD who seem to have access to a veritable goldmine of fondly remembered and unfairly forgotten cherishable nuggets from the

golden days of the box in the living room long before reality TV became... well, a reality.

The Count of Monte CristoOne of the earliest successes of ITV was the famous ‘Robin Hood’ series starring Richard Greene which is available from Network but their new releases from the late 50’s stable of swashbuckling adventure shows include ‘The Count of Monte Cristo’ which is an absolutely splendid series rich in production values cramming as much action as is possible in each 25 minute episode of which there are 39 in this 5 disc boxset. Based on the novel by Alexandre Dumas George Dolenz plays the fabulously rich Count of the title who battles injustice all over 19th century Europe in stories that are well written and acted and come highly recommended by me.

Sword of FreedomIn a similar vein but only available as a Web only release from www.networkdvd.co.uk comes‘Sword Of Freedom’ set in 16th century Florence at the time of the infamous De Medicis. This features Edmund Purdom as painter Marco del Monte who regularly outwits the villains of the piece with a wit as sharp as his sword. Perhaps not quite so rich in production values as ‘Monte Cristo’, “Sword of Freedom” is probably more well remembered by TV viewers of a certain age who will enjoy looking out for early appearances of TV stalwarts like Patrick( Dr.Who) Troughton and Peter (Jason King) Wyngarde. Again

available in a finely packaged boxset of 39 episodes this is your only chance to obtain a real gem of a series which is unlikely ever to be seen again on TV so visit Network’s regularly updated website immediately and discover the treasures it contains.

The War LordIf your taste for finely mounted historical swashbucklers extends to movies as well then you will find few better than Eureka Video’s ‘The War Lord’ which is one of the finest examples of the genre. Charlton Heston brings his usual strength and gravitas to the role of the 11th century Norman warlord sent to maintain peace in a land plagued by invaders only to find that his love for a local maiden pledged to him on her wedding night by an ancient law leads him into severe tests of his courage and loyalty whilst battling both barbarians and his fiercely ambitious brother. Famous for the rousing and unforgettable score by Jerome Moross Eureka’s DVD release of THE WAR LORD is the best this movie has looked since its cinema release in 1965. A superb movie.

Check for any blue smoke coming from the exhaust as this could be a sign of engine wear.

Ask to see the car’s full service history and any repair receipts - be wary of any refusal to produce these documents.

Always test-drive the car yourself. Listen out for any unexpected noises, and make sure the gear changes are smooth, the car drives straight and the brakes are efficient.

If you’re buying from a dealership, do your research on the company and check their feedback and testimonials to get an idea of their reputation.

Always find out if the car comes with a warranty - and be aware that the Trading Standards Agency states that by-law you are entitled to a 3-month warranty.

OUT & ABOUT

www.athomeinwales.com 25

Buying a second-hand car can be a minefield, but we caught up with Elliot Lynn, Managing Director of Cardiff Cars, to get the lowdown on what we should be looking out for before parting with that hard-earned cash…

Be aware that, in general, German and Japanese vehicles tend to retain their second-hand car value better than others, and I’d advise investing in a diesel car if you’re looking to get the best value for money.

Make sure the vehicle is HPI clear - this is a background check that will let you know if the vehicle has been stolen, previously written off, or if there is any outstanding finance.

Ensure that the car’s registration and chassis number corresponds with those on the registration document.

When viewing the vehicle, walk around the car and look at it from all four corners to check for any obvious signs of crash repairs, and check the boot, carpets and around the windows for any water stains that could indicate a leak.

Check that the condition of the car reflects the mileage, and check that the odometer for numbers that are out of line as this is a sign that the mileage may have been tampered with.

Examine the condition of the tyres for tread depth and uneven wear that could indicate the wheels are not correctly aligned.

Make sure all the car’s electrical components work correctly - including seats, mirrors and sunroofs.
