THE CITY

Photo: lord_yo

Kiev’s 1.500-year-old mix of fortunes rings out loudly from caves left by scholarly monks and dazzling blue StMichael’s, completed in 2001, on the site of a monasteryrazed under Communism, distinctive buildings by Rastrelli, darling architect of St Petersburg, via art collected bypre-revolutionary sugar magnates to the Babi Yarmassacre memorial. There is wedding cake Stalin Empirearchitecture, the Chernobyl Museum and proudIndependence Square.

Upon all this, Kiev has its feet rmly planted in the Western capitalist future. The stately mansions of theLypki district are now government buildings. The CavesMonastery, parks and Soviet statues dene ancientPechersk. The Upper City has landmark churches, StSophia’s was modelled on the Hagia Sophia in Istanbul, and bohemian Andrew’s Descent delights as it winds downinto 19th-century Podil. Across the river lies a concreteforest of Soviet apartment blocks.

Kiev’s music is unmissable, particularly the superb ballet and opera at the Viennese-style Opera House.

SHOPPING

Photo: project-404

Sometimes it’s hard to imagine that for decades it was dicult to nd anything to buy. Now you can ndpractically anything in fashion-conscious Kiev. The TsUMdepartment store on Khreshatyk has so completely throwno its Soviet past it is now known as "Kiev’s Harrods".

The city’s rst shopping mall, glass-domed Globus, with itsinternational brands and fast food hall beneathIndependence Square, has spawned many cousins. PoshMandarin Plaza is where the moneyed shop, Alta Centrehas a gallery of Ukrainian fashion designers and Metrogradis vast and more down to earth. Below Bessarabska rynoklies a colourful and lively, must-see farmers’ market.

To get a feel for how most locals shop, take the Metro to Kontraktova Ploscha, to the rynok (market) there. And allthose dingy old Metro passages are now bright with shopsselling computers, perfumes, mobile phones and skimpyundies. Lively and picturesque Andriyivsky Uziz (Andrew’sDescent), in ‘old Kiev,’ is the place to head for souvenirs –from Ukrainian crafts and paintings to the ubiquitousRussian nesting dolls and fur hats. For serious collectors,Socialist Realism art is well represented in L-Art Gallery, and contemporary art and jewellery at Triptych.
