Ikebana International Just like it takes all the petals in a chrysanthemum to make a flower, every member of Ikebana is essential. A very special thank you to Deborah Bowman, host for our “ikebana picnic,” installation of officers and Nan’s demonstration. Deborah, your garden was delightful and everyone made such wonderful Asian treats to share! A huge thanks to all the busy bees who have been working all summer on Kiku Matsui, membership, programs, budget, yearbook, website, Facebook and special events. Six teams have been busy designing their outdoor sculpture for Kiku Matsuri, the traditional Japanese Chrysanthemum festival. This poem by Midori Tanimune captures the essence of the North America Regional Conference in Ashville. Ashville was in bloom with huge peonies and hydrangeas and gracious Southern hospitality. If you were unable to attend, you missed amazing demonstrations, creative outdoor sculptures, marvelous workshops and an exhibition filled with unique designs from many schools. Patricia O’Reilly’s a placement in the Founder’s Building on the University of Texas Dallas campus for your exhibit incorporating Kiku - chrysanthemums. Exhibits will be installed on October 30, and open for viewing from the afternoon of October 30 thru the aftermppm pf November 2. This year, Riji Kika Shibita will lead workshops on Saturday, November 1 and demonstrate on Sunday, November 2. Her Grande Finale will fill the stage. What an exciting conclusion to Kiku Matsuri. We had a great time learning about the history of the Samurai warrior costumes. Afterward, we all went to lunch at Café Modern. It was an informational and relaxing excursion. A special thank you to all who participated in the TAO Arts East Meets West exhibition at the Irving Arts Center June 16-July 6 2014. Creating Beauty & Harmony

Jerry McManus, 4th grade teacher in

the Sogetsu School, will present a

program entitled “Creating Beauty &

Harmony.” She will use containers

that have been made for her by her

husband, Daryl McManus. He is

very innovative and a true craftsman.

Daryl will be on hand to describe the

process he used to create these

special containers for Jerry. You will

be very impressed at the beauty and

harmony that is created by their

collaboration.

As a treat, Daryl has offered to create

Dallas Chapter 13 – September 18 Program

a special container to use in a mini-

workshop following the demonstration.

The container will be made of white PVC

pipe, about 9” high and 2” in diameter. It

will have holes and notches that will

accommodate small-ish flowers and light-

weight branch/line material. Bring fresh or

dried material as you wish.

The cost of the container is $10. Cash or

check, please. There will be a limited

number, so one per person, please.

Registration will open at 9:30 am.

Refreshments will be served (see side bar)

and the Ikebana Market catalog will be

available for ordering containers.

The business meeting will start at 10:00 am, followed by Jerry’s and Daryl’s Program and the Mini-Workshop

In Japan: Late Summer and Fall Flowers

It’s no surprise that flower viewing is a national pastime in Japan. What

flowers does one view in the heat of late summer and early fall? You might

be surprised to know that the flowers that bloom in Japan at this time of

year are not so different than those we find here in North Texas in late

summer and early fall – sunflowers, wildflowers, solidago, miscanthus, etc.

You might find this YouTube video interesting, showing the flowers of late

had a new member who is an instructor of Sangetsu who joined our chapter two

years ago. We are now bringing her instructor (Katia Santos) in from Los Angeles

Members are invited to bring an arrangement to exhibit and talk about. Please bring any items (Japanese or Ikebana-related) that you would like to donate for the Gomi Sale, or sell in the Ginza. Mark the Ginza items with your minimum asking price; they will be auctioned off and our Chapter will receive 25% of the selling price. Ways and Means will be available if you need to pick up a new container, kenzan or hasami. Bento Box lunches will be available. Choices

are: 1. Sushi (uncooked fish) 2. Chicken Teriyaki 3. Beef Teriyaki, or 4. Vegetarian. Kika Shibata, Riji —Sculpture Techniques: How to Balance and Secure Materials

in a Sculptural Arrangement — Workshop Mrs. Shibata will show the process of a

sculptural arrangement, then all members will work together to create a structure

arrangement, which will contain many Sogetsu elements. We will use large-scale

curly willow and flowers. Mrs. Shibata suggested that helpful tools would include

wire, wire cutters, glue dots, plastic ties, hammer and nails (2 sizes—1 and 2

inches long) gloves and saw, etc. Bring a notepad, pen and camera if you wish.

Kiku Matsuri 2014 is partnering with the Richardson Public Library to present a

Teens and ‘Tweens program on Saturday, October 4, 2 – 4 pm. Registration is

required at the Library. This program is funded by the Japan-America Society of

Dallas/Fort Worth! Volunteers are needed to assist (Books 3-4 and above) during

15th Annual Otsukimi Moon Viewing Celebration at Klyde Warren Park – JASD/FW

with the Crow Collection of Asian Art. Dallas Chapter 13 will demonstrate during

this event. Volunteers are needed for demonstration and to bring an arrangement.

This is a great opportunity for us to promote Kiku Matsuri 2014.

38 and Sogetsu Dallas Branch, in partnership with The University of Texas –

Dallas and Japan-American Society of Dallas/Fort Worth.

All events will take place at UT-Dallas, including outdoor sculptures, exhibition of

arrangements, workshops for practitioners and novices and grand finale

demonstration. Riji Kika Shibata, Sogetsu School, will be our guest artist and John

Stich, Honorary Consul-General for Japan at Dallas will be the Honorary

Chairperson for this event. More information, including details of events and
