Book of the week‘SEVEN Deadly Sins – My Pursuit of Lance Armstrong’ by David Walsh is well worth a read.

As early as Armstrong’s first victory on the Tour in 1999, ‘Sunday Times’ journalist David Walsh had reason to think that the incredible performances

were too good to be true.Based on insider

information and dogged research, David began to unmask the truth.

Cycling’s biggest star used every weapon in his armoury to protect his name. But he could not keep everyone silent.

In the autumn of 2012, the USADA published

a damning report on Armstrong that resulted in the American being stripped of his seven Tour victories and left his reputation in shreds. Walsh’s long fight to reveal the truth had been vindicated. This book tells his compelling story.

‘BODY and Forgetting’ comes to The Watergate Theatre tonight (Wednesday). The full-length dance production is by the renowned Liz Roche Company.

Emotionally powerful and haunting, Liz’s choreography interacts with a film piece by Alan Gilsenan and with Denis Roche’s live score.

Inspired by

Milan Kundera’s ‘The Book of Laughter and Forgetting’, the company of remarkable dancers find their way through delicately woven circumstances of disappearance, loss, relationship and hope. Liz explains: “I began looking at the writings of Milan Kundera and was particularly interested in his stories of disappearance and memory, and how he portrays the complexities of loss

and betrayal. I worked with the dancers finding ways to make movement based on texts they wrote themselves about what they regretted not saying to someone at a pivotal time in their lives. Through the dance they could rewrite and therefore reclaim their past.” Show: 8pm. Tickets: €12/€10.

Children will have the opportunity to create their own collaged egg forms. Suitable for children aged 5-12 years old but all the family are welcome to join in. Free event. Gallery tours include

OXFAM is calling on the people of Kilkenny to join hundreds of people all over Ireland by hosting an Oxfam Get Together for International Women’s Day on March 8.

It can be anything from a coffee morning to a movie night or even a karaoke night. At the heart of the idea is to get together with friends, family and colleagues

and do something that you love – while raising money for Oxfam’s work. Speaking about her recent trip to Tanzania, Sharon Corr, Oxfam Ireland Ambassador and judge on RTE’s The Voice of Ireland, explains: “Meeting some of the women who have benefited from Oxfam’s work in Tanzania was truly inspiring.

The majority of people

living in poverty are women. It’s fantastic to see how Oxfam can help women reclaim their rights and make their voices heard; from supporting female farmers to tackling domestic violence.” To download your Oxfam Get Together fundraising pack and find out more visit www.oxfamireland.og/gettogether

ARTIST Jennie Castle has a background in fine art and a degree in architecture from the University of Kwa-Zulu Natal, Durban, South Africa.

Now living in Co Kilkenny, Jennie works from her studio space, Catlerin Studios and Workshops, at ‘The Studio’, Bennettsbridge. Painting and drawing have always been a central thread running through her career.

Subject matter has varied over time, from the plant environment to the built and inhabited

environment. Recent exhibitions have given her the opportunity to integrate the two creative disciplines of architecture and fine

art and explore the use of line in paintings.   The significance of the line - drawn and painted, informative and decorative - is revealed in new work. The application of paint, of oils in their pure colour form, applied to ‘non-colour’ backgrounds creating other-worldly effects is also of importance. Her artwork can be viewed at the studios and he can be contacted at 087-9836342 or [email protected]. Visit her blog at www.jenniecastleartist.blogspot.com.

MARK Eitzel and his band play Cleere’s Theatre on February 23.

After a string of bad luck that included a heart attack that set him back several months and the implosion of his band ‘American Music Club’, Mark Eitzel fortuitously

found himself in the studio with celebrated producer Sheldon Gomberg.

The result is ‘Don’t Be a Stranger’ Eitzel’s finest solo album in over a decade. Mark has released over 15 albums of original material with his

band American Music Club and as a solo artist. The Guardian has called him ‘America’s Greatest Living Lyricist’ and Rolling Stone once gave him their Songwriter of the Year award. Tickets €18.

NASHTOWN Castle Preserves and Pickles offer a delicious range of products when they are in season.

Wild Crab Apple Jelly is created with foraged wild crab apples growing in the local wild hedgerows.

2012 was a bad year for apples but the makers of Nashtown Castle found one special wild tree that yielded all the crab apples that were required.

Sloe & Crab Apple Jelly also nearly suffered as the result of a poor year for sloes however, some careful sleuthing in the nearby woods resulted

in enough to make this special jelly.

Pickled Red Cabbage is made from home-grown cabbage so it travels only a few yards from where it

grows, to the pickling bowl in the kitchen.

Apple & Lavender Jelly is also made from home-grown lavender and apples.

Nashtown Castle Preserves and Pickles are available in Glasrai & Goodies, Gowran, and Phelan’s Vegetable Shop, Ormonde Street.

DON’T worry if you feel that this has been the worst start to a year ever. Maybe you have felt more stress and financial pressure than you remember. Perhaps you have been cornered by more conflict and bullying than any self respecting adult should put up with? It was only a couple of months ago that some thought the end of the world would come. We were all to be combusted into random particles of light! We would have held no physical form and therefore held no grasp on reality at all.

In comparison, the troubles we face are a veritable tea party. Try and keep this broader perspective and gratitude for each new day - which has atleast some rhyme and reason to it. You might have lost your accommodation or your partner or your job. Maybe, just maybe though

it will make room for a new direction for you, far more in keeping with who you are now. Be glad of that person...you!

You have what it takes, if you have survived the last month. Keep your eyes peeled for your reason d’etre and go for it! Pessimism may rule but positivity rocks. Take your pick!

For an immediate feel good factor, I did two things this week – an instantaneous sun-kissed tan from Blush, above Moore’s Fashion on High Street and then, of course, salsa with Salsa Nation on John Street.
