Group members :LEE JIA CHZENEO XUE YEEWONG XIAO HUILIM YEE MUNCHAN SIN YENIdentify passages from the novel to support different point of view.Task 1 :Point of ViewThe story is told from Scouts point of view, she is an old woman looking back on the storyline.Evidence: When he was nearly thirteen, my brother Jem got his arm badly broken at the elbow. (pg 1, para 1, line 1)First Person POVHighlight the most used literary devices and elements that you can identify in the novel. Present your views on the purpose of the author using such literary devices and elements.Task 2 :Literary DevicesEvidence: -Hes as old as you, nearly, I said. -- -He made me start off on the wrong foot. -Let him go, Scout. Why? -He didnt have any lunch, I said, and explained my involvement in Walters dietary affairs. (Pg 3, chap 3, para 2)Purposes: 1.The readers can understand the character better. 2.Because the human being always talks to one another and the dialogues are easily understand by the readers.

DialogueExamples: Jem, it looks like a pumpkin- ( pg 93, para 7, line 24 )

Smoke was rolling off our house and Miss Rachels house like fog off a riverbank, and men were pulling hoses toward them. ( pg 93, para 9, line 26-28 )

SimileHarper Lee uses these similes to allow the reader in order to have a better understanding about the comparison of the situation or scene.'...looks like a pumpkin-' was used when describing the house fire. Scout uses this simile to describe the vivid colour of the fire. It allows us to imagine how bright the orange colour was and creates an image in our mind.'...like fog off a river bank.' This phrase was used during the fire, describing the smoke that was pouring everywhere. Harper Lee has used this simile to help us understand the way in which the smoke was rolling onto the surrounding houses and engulfing them in smoke.

The purpose of using simileMockingbird-The idea of innocenceEg. Boo Radley is like a mokingbird which does not harm anyone; instead, he leaves Jem and Scout presents, covers Scout with a blanket during the fire, and eventually saves the children from Bob Ewell. Evidence: -As we came to the live oaks at the Radley Place I raised my finger to point for the hundredth time to the knot-hole where I had found the chewing gum, trying to make Jem believe I had found it there, and found myself pointing at another piece of tinfoil. (Page 45,chapter 4, last paragraph, line 1-3 / Page 46, chapter 4, paragraph 1, line 1-2) -I looked down and found myself clutching a brown woolen blanket I was wearing around my shoulders, squaw-fashion.(Page 95, chapter 8, paragraph 9, line 1-3) - Atticus put his face in my hair and rubbed it. When he got up and walked across the porch into the shadows, his youthful step had returned. Before he went inside the house, he stopped in front of Boo Radley. Thank you for my children, Arthur, he said. (Page 370, chapter 30, last paragraph, line 1-5)

Symbolism-Miss Maudies tin roof quelled the flames. (Page 94, Chapter 8, paragraph 10, line 1)-Roaring, the house collapsed (Page 94, chapter 8, paragraph 10, line 1,2)-The fire was well into the second floor and had eaten its way to the roof: window frames were black against a vivid orange center. (Page 93, chapter 8, paragraph 6, line 3,4,5) -Harper Lee used personification to create the feeling of drama and fear while describing the fire.

Personification:Evidence: window frames were black against a vivid orange center. (chap 8, pg 93, para 5, line 22)Purpose: Harper Lee uses imagery to create drama and encourage the reader to imagine the event in a more vivid sense.

Imagery Evidence: 'For a while' in Maycomb meant anything from three days to thirty years. Jem and I exchanged glances. (chap 13, pg 169, para 9, line 21)Purpose: To emphasize something. In the example given above a while is exaggerated to emphasize that a while seemed very long.HyperboleLiterary ElementsToneWhen Scout talks about Aunt Alexandra.Scout describes her understanding of her aunts belief in literal terms.NaiveWhile Scout herself is nave in the way she narrates what's going on, the overall effect is ironic: mocking established beliefs by portraying them in an absurd way.IronicMoodScary-Jem gave a reasonable description of Boo: Boo was about six-and-a-half feet tall, judging from his tracks; he dined on raw squirrels and any cats he could catch, thats why his hands were bloodstained. (Page 16, chapter 1, paragraph 3, line 1-5)

Sorrowful-Toms dead. Aunt Alexandra put her hands to her mouth. They shot him, said Atticus. He was running. It was during their exercise period. They said he just broke into a blind raving charge at the fence and started climbing over. Right in front of them(Page 315, chapter 24, paragraph 2-4) Setting - PlaceMayomb county Maycomb, Alabamais thefictional home town ofthe Finches, and is the setting of the vast majority ofTo Kill a Mockingbird. Maycomb is a small, hot andsleepy town where theresidents are privy to the details of each other's lives. The atmosphere ofMaycombis relaxed and inward-looking.Evidence: There was no hurry, for there was nowhere to go, nothing to buy and no money to buy it with, nothing to see outside the boundaries of Maycomb County. ( chapter 1, page 6, paragraph 2, line 4-7)

Finchs Landing:The old homestead built by Simon Finch, Scout and Jems ancestor. Atticus sister, Alexandra, and her husband live at Finch Landing, and every Christmas Scout and Jem are forced to go visit with their father. Their Uncle Jack stays with them for a week then, and they enjoy that, but the Christmas Day trip to visit Aunt Alexandra is a source of aggravation for both Scout and Jem because they have to play with their cousin, Francis.Evidence: We went to Finchs Landing every Christmas in my memory. ( chapter 8, page 103, para. 1, line 2-3) Maycomb County courthouse The place where Tom Robinsons trial was carried out.

Evidence : The Maycomb County courthouse was faintly reminiscent of Arlington in one respect: the concrete pillars supporting its south roof were too heavy for their light burden. (Page 216, chapter 16, last paragraph, line 1-4) As he raised his right hand, the useless one slipped off the Bible and hit the clerks table. He was trying again when Judge Taylor growled, Thatll do, Tom. Tom took the oath and stepped into the witness chair. (Page 254, chapter 19, paragraph 1, line 4-8)

The high-school auditoriumA carnival had been held in the high-school auditorium.Evidence: The high-school auditorium would be open, there would be a pageant for the grown-ups; apple-bobbing, taffy-pulling, pinning the tail on the donkey for the children. (Page 338,chapter 27,paragraph2 ,line 2-5)

The Radley Place:The children of Maycomb County believe that the Radley Place is evil and haunted. They run past it whenever they cannot avoid going by it, and they wont eat the pecans that fall into the schoolyard from the pecan tree that grows in the Radley yard because they think theyre poisoned.Evidence: The Maycomb school grounds adjoined the back of the Radley lot; from the Radley chickenyard tall pecan trees shook their fruit into the schoolyard, but the nuts lay untouched by the children: Radley pecan would kill you.(Page 11, chapter 1paragraph 1,line 3-7)

Setting TimeTo Kill a Mockingbirdtakes place in the years 1933 to 1935.

In the opening Scout describes Maycomb and says "Maycomb County had recently been told that it had nothing to fear but fear itself" . This comes from President Roosevelt's inaugural address in March of 1933.

In Chapter 20, during the trial, Atticus says "There is a tendency in this year of grace, 1935, for certain people to use this phrase out of context, to satisfy all conditions."Setting- Time
