Principal’s Report The term ‘mental health’ is frequently misunderstood. ‘Mental health’ is often used as a substitute for mental health conditions – such as depression, anxiety conditions, schizophrenia, and others.

According to the World Health Organization, however, mental health is “a state of well-being in which every individual realises his or her own potential, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to her or his community.”

Research shows that high levels of mental health are associated with increased learning, creativity and productivity, more pro-social behaviour and positive social relationships, and with improved physical health and life expectancy. In contrast, mental health conditions can cause distress, impact on day-to-day functioning and relationships, and are associated with poor physical health and premature death from suicide.

But it’s important to remember that mental health is complex. The fact that someone is not experiencing a mental health condition doesn’t necessarily mean their mental health is flourishing. Likewise, it’s possible to be diagnosed with a mental health condition while feeling well in many aspects of life.

Ultimately, mental health is about being cognitively, emotionally and socially healthy – the way we think, feel and develop relationships - and not merely the absence of a mental health condition.

At Killarney we have many programs and resources to promote positive mental health. These are not limited to the programs below, as we are always reflecting, examining data to try to pre-empt problems so that our students are prepared for what is ahead.

Year 7: Resilience Doughnut, Drama Program, The Hurting Game (Cyberbullying and Digital Footprint) Year 8: Resilience Doughnut, Drama Program, The Hurting Game (Cyberbullying and Digital Footprint), Raise Mentoring for identified students Year 9: In 2018 we did Headspace Mental Health Presentation, KYDS workshop including Cybersafety, positive mental health, Brainstorm Productions on Stress, Anxiety and Depression, Smashed project play and workshop on alcohol abuse and underage drinking, Raise Mentoring for identified students, Learning Journeys. Year 10: Guest speakers from DAYS, Love Bites Program on respectful relationships, Study Sensei, Young Men’s Health Forum for identified students, Empowering Young Minds for targetted group Year 11: HSC Success with goal setting, Healthy living, anxiety and stress, study plans, Crossroads with GP Visits, Sleep Seminar, Time Management. Year 12: Organisational strategies, Study Skills Sessions, Coping strategies, Sleep program.

As well as this our P&C has generously provided you with a subscription to School TV which has some excellent resources on Mental Health. Michael Carr- Greg is on Psychologist who endorses this series. You can find the link on our school website under Technology/Parents, scroll down it is the bottom link https://killarney-h.schools.nsw.schooltv.me/

As the term draws to a close I would like to thank the students and families in the Year groups that I look after for their continued hard work as a part of our Killarney Community. Students in years 7, 9 and 11 have knuckled down to make the transition into 2019 a smooth one. I was really pleased recently to see many of these students participate in the School Athletics carnival with great spirit of participation and competition. For those students who will represent the school at Zone, I wish you all the best.

The year 7 / 12 dance was a very well-liked and well attended event. Thank you to the KHHS School Leaders and staff who supported this event. On the same evening the Year 7 parents attended an information session and soiree, having the opportunity to meet other parents of students in their child’s class. This was an extremely well attended function and a lovely evening seemed to be had by all.

With many assessment tasks falling due towards the end of term can I please remind students to follow processes outlined within their respective assessment policies. These policies are posted on the KHHS Website under School Years. The policy documents indicate clearly the requirements for assessment submission, or the process for ‘Illness/Misadventure’ if this arises.

A continued big thank you to the KHHS staff, particularly Classroom Teachers and their Head Teachers, for seeking continual improvement in programming, assessment and daily teaching.

All staff have been reminded to maintain a focus on consistent practices outside and inside the classroom throughout the term as KHHS continues to implement PBL (Positive Behaviour for engaged Learning).

A big thank you also to the Wellbeing Team and the Learning and Support Team, who feverishly work in the background, to better support students and families across the school.

With the holidays looming, I wish all a happy and safe break.

Ms Baker Deputy Principal Years 7, 9 and 11.

We have had an excellent start to the year in CAPA with many of our gifted and talented Drama students being selected to be part of the NSW Public Schools State Drama Ensembles. These groups are chosen after a rigorous and challenging audition and call back process that invites students from all over NSW to audition. The groups meet every week to rehearse with professional tutors and create original theatre pieces to be performed in the State Drama Festival at The Seymour Centre. Traditionally the Performing Arts High Schools are very well represented in these groups and this year is not different. Killarney students have done extremely well to audition so successfully. We have 8 students that have been selected to represent the state.

Year 11 Hospitality

This Year we have a large class of enthusiastic Hospitality Students who have embarked on a Certificate II in Hospitality Kitchen Operations. They study this subject in a Block of 3 ½ hours every Wednesday afternoon. Hospitality is also one of their HSC subjects and can count towards their ATAR. Thus letting our students achieve a Certificate II in Hospitality and their HSC at the same time.

Students recently completed their first service period when they catered for Open Night, demonstrating their newfound skills. I was so proud of the professional manner in which this team of students conducted themselves and produced a range of delicious products. The menu on the night was Thai Sausage Rolls, Tomato and Basil Bruschetta, Duxelle Palmiers and Lemon Meringue Cup Cakes.

Please enjoy the photos from our Professional Year 11 Hospitality Class.

Terrific Ten Students This Year our Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) Team has initiated a New Award called the Terrific Ten, which stands for having Ten Terrific school days. Our sentral data is analysed each fortnight to establish the student in each Year Group who has achieved the most Killa’s, these are the frequent rewards given to students for upholding our school values of Connect, Respect and Aspire. Killarney Heights High School acknowledges the achievements of these students with a Terrific Ten Dollar Credit at the school Canteen. Each fortnight the Terrific Ten students for each Year Group are published in the Daily Notices. Students can then access their Terrific Ten Dollar Credit from the Canteen by showing their KHHS School ID to the Canteen Staff. Now in its 22nd year at Killarney, the Award has kicked-off for 2019. Sixty eager Year 9 students have enrolled and are busy setting-up their programmes for Skill, Service and Physical Recreation. The website has plenty of good advice for new participants at https://dukeofed.com.au/doing-the-award/ and if more help is needed students should see Mr Collins.

The dates for the two Bronze hikes (Adventurous Journeys) are on the school calendar: 17-18th May and 8-9th September. Training and planning sessions will commence soon.

Silver and Gold will open for enrolment at the start of Term 2. Bronze participants from previous years are invited to enrol – but the previous Award needs to be completed first. This is a priority! Students who have not done a previous level may enrol directly into Silver or Gold, but they should be aware that it will take longer to finish. The first hike will be at the end of Term 2.

It’s going to be an exciting year – get on board!

P&C Update Thanks to the many faces that came to the P&C Meeting on 25 March – great to see so many newer families represented. There will be a P&C email to all families with more detail about the meeting, however wanted to let you know broadly what we covered and what is coming up at the next meetings. Technology Sabina Walters walked us all through various technologies that are available to our students (such as Moodle) and to parents – Parent Portal which allows parents and carers to access key information about their students attendance, access previous school reports, view student’s timetables, access the global school calendar and more. Follow this link https://killarney-h.schools.nsw.gov.au/technology/parent-portal.html. To access the portal (It’s on the technology page of the school website and instructions are also included on the website). If you have mislaid access details (it relies on an email address you will have registered) then email the school office directly for assistance. While on the website have a look at your child's year page and download the essential parent guide "Year Assessment Guidebook". There is one available for each year group and they provide the school's policy on assessments, timing of Assessment Tasks as well as the content examined for each assessable task students will have in 2019 - a must have in every household! We also looked at School TV (also on the website under Technology) which provides a vast range of resources for students and families on topics such as dealing with a range of well-being topics such as sleep, grief, depression, exam stress, school transition, social media etc. Next Meeting The next meeting (May 20) will focus on allocation of funds. The P&C works in partnership with the school to determine the best use of funds and all families are invited to contribute to suggestions on where these funds should be invested. More information will be provided in the P&C email, but don’t hesitate to offer suggestions via [email protected] Year 7 Welcome Soiree Thank you to Jane Booth who jumped in to organize the year 7 welcome. Thank you also to all the year 8, 9, 10, 11 & 12 families who contributed food and drinks and stayed to serve, clean up and chat to our new year 7 families. The feedback was very positive with over 75 families attending. Uniform Discussions were held on several uniform aspects (including potentially phasing out the school blazer and replacing with the soft shell jacket). This will be discussed further at the next meeting where decisions will be made.
