Quite often the experience has been cause for some girls to rethink their career path. Thanks to Mrs Taberner who worked behind the scenes to coordinate the programme. Thanks also to Mr Mahmoud and Ms Shiplee for supporting girls. We are very excited this week to receive approval from Kildare Education Ministries to move into the next stage of the school Master Plan. This will involve removing the portables from the Rosemary Avenue yard and building a Performing Arts facility to house classes for Drama and Music. It will include studios for instrumental lessons and a possible new maintenance area and small car park. Once this building is finished it will free up the current drama side of the Kennedy Hall for use by the Sports department, thereby doubling their indoor area for classes. The other key development in our Master Plan is to develop a Student Services Centre, where we can bring together the various student support services in the one area. Though this is further off in the future we hope to set up a temporary space in the Delaney Building. At the moment, we plan to self fund the new Performing Arts area, using money we have saved over the past few years for capital improvements. Looking towards next week, we have Learning Conversations for Years 7-11 parents and students on Thursday. Please ensure you take this opportunity to meet with teachers. If you are unable to get a suitable time please request a phone interview or, alternatively, send any questions you have via email to the relevant teacher On Monday September 17th we will be holding a Transfer of Land Ritual, where the Brigidine Sisters will symbolically be handing over the ownership of property to Kildare Ministries. This is the last step of the process that began a number of years ago to setup the Brigidine schools for the future by ensuring a governance structure would continue to exist, offering education which is in the Catholic tradition and the spirit of St. Brigid. We welcome past students to attend the Ritual, which will be held at 11.45am. For organisational purposes, please advise the front office if you intend to come. Dear Parents and Friends

School has been a little quiet this week with Year 10 students out at Work Experience. The girls participate in this as part of their preparation for pathway decision making in Year 12. We look forward to hearing their stories upon their return.

Out and AboutThere are many events occurring in the last two weeks of Term 3.The SCSA Athletics teams are undertaking early morning training for the competition next Monday at Albert Park.

There is a school assembly (hosted by the Year 10s, back from their week at Work Experience) on Wednesday September 12 at 12.10pm in Kennedy Hall.

Thursday 13th September is a student free day, with the Parent/Student/Teacher Learning Conversations taking place from 12.00pm until 8.00pm.

Saturday 15th September is the Multicultural Dinner in the Hall at 7.00pm. The tickets sold out last week but we have added a further fifty. When these are gone we cannot increase the numbers. This promises to be a wonderful night of international food and entertainment.

On Monday 17th September there will be an assembly with Kildare Ministries at 11.45am. All students will be provided with lunch afterwards and there will be organised games on the oval. Fingers crossed for a sunny afternoon, as the student committees have put a great deal of effort into these celebrations.

The Class of 1997 met last week for their 21st Reunion. Leanne Rechichi organised the event and reported that a great afternoon was had by all, with lots of laughs and reminiscing!

Best wishes for the coming week. Enjoy the Spring weather and the beautiful blossoms.

On the 7th of August, the Year 10 Indonesian students were accompanied by Bu Cosentino and Bu Chau to participate in the ‘Don’t Palm Us Off ‘ forum at the Melbourne Zoo.

Here, we were able to understand further that the ‘ Don’t Palm Us Off ’ campaign encourages consumers to ask for palm oil that is clearly labelled and sustainably produced. 100% certified sustainable palm oil is the palm oil that does not threaten orangutans and other animals in the wild by destroying their habitat, the forest.

We were able to visit a variety of different animals and listen deeply to one of the lead speakers about how we can make a difference to orangutans that are endangered because of consumers’ poor choices.

After a very educational morning we were treated to a delicious Indonesian lunch, where we got to experience a different style of food and have a better understanding of the Indonesian culture. We had a wonderful day out and really appreciate both Bu Cosentino and Bu Chau taking time out of their day to take us on this informative excursion and giving us the opportunity to learn how to think twice about what we buy and being able to speak up about what we think is right and wrong.

We are now able to help spread the news and teach everyone to be aware of this issue and to get involved in the campaign to make a difference.

Year 10 Super Seventies Fashion Excursion Back to the Present

On Thursday 30th August, Year 10 Fashion Worksop students participated in a retrospective field trip to Rippon Lea mansion for the Super Seventies exhibition, which was then culminated with a trip to Chadstone. The students identified fashion features of the seventies period and then made comparisons with today’s fashion.

Arriving at Rippon Lea mansion was a treat in itself. The students walked into the beautiful gardens and then, as if by magic, the majestic mansion appeared. We were greeted by a guide, dressed in purple flares and psychedelic shirt, who introduced us to the exhibition. The mansion was impressive with its grand entrance, exquisite staircase and numerous rooms each filled with fashion from the 70s. Each room covered a specific genre from the period: the flower power period, protest fashion and disco fashion all made an appearance. Designers from the seventies were also featured including Prue Acton, Sally Brown and the House of Merivale. The students marvelled at the Seventies style clothes in the context of the period including the Vietnam war, women’s liberation and music from that time.

We had enough time to wander around the extensive gardens before heading back to the present day fashion, to the fashion capitol – Chadstone.

In Chadstone the students were given a modern day perspective of high-end fashion from the three international fashion houses- Valentino, Dior and Dolce Gabbana. Each store gave their perception of the fashion brand and the style features for this season. The students then made a comparison of the seventies style, the high-end stores and the fast fashion outlets. It was a very rewarding experience.

On Wednesday 29th August, Ms Pia Fabris and Ms Fros Stabologlou’s Year 10 Photography and Film classes went on an excursion to the Monash Gallery of Art and took photographs throughout Melbourne city.

Students listened attentively when the Educational Officer discussed the digital and silver gelatin artworks in the exhibition. Later, students had the opportunity to analyse an artwork on their own, which will be further developed in the classroom.

During the photographic walking tour through the city, students took photographs of architecture, statues and landmarks, based on the theme, Legacy, which was the theme of the exhibition too.

“We learned how to look after ourselves and we had to do this otherwise we couldn’t cope.”“I wonder if I should have said something. He mentioned a while before he died that he was having a hard time and I didn’t tell anyone."“It was three and a half years ago that he left us. We’re doing alright now. We’ve lost a lot.”
