How to select the right kiln for you:It is important to select the model that will meet your needs now and in the future. Here are a couple of questions that will help you decide on which model to choose that best fits your needs. To help in your selection process, here are a series of questions that should help you narrow your search.

1. Which model will fit in the area you have chosen to locate a kiln? Kilns need a minimum 18” clearance from walls on all sides.

2. Which model will fit the pieces that you wish to fire? To answer this, you will need to figure out the dimensions of the largest piece you will want to fire and the maximum volume of material that you will need to produce in a specific time frame.

3. Which models will work on my power supply? An electrician can verify what voltage, amperage and phase you have. Ordering a kiln that does not match can be expensive to correct.

•Voltage-The voltage that is most common is 208V or 240V. As a general rule 208V, is common in schools and businesses, and 240V is common in residential areas. However, there are exceptions. •Amerage-Most buildings have a limited amperage available without having the power company upgrade service. In most cases it will be necessary to install a dedicated breaker to run the kiln. Your circuit box or fuse panel must have the room for the breaker or fuse that corresponds to the model you choose. •Phase-Kilns can be wired for single-phase or 3-phase power sources. Single-phase power supplies have two current carrying wires and a ground wire and are common in residential and industrial areas. 3-phase power supplies utilize three current-carrying wires and a ground wire and are usually only found in businesses and institutions. There are exceptions, and some buildings have both supplies available.4. Will the kiln fire to the temperature you need? You will need to find a kiln that will fire to a temperature that meets, and

preferably exceeds, the temperature requirements of the materials you will be working with. Materials such as porcelain and stoneware require the kiln to reach temperatures up to Cone 10 or 2350°F.

5. Which controller? The two choices are the automatic KilnMaster (KM), and the manual KilnSitter (KS). See the next page for further information on controller types.

Choosing between a manual, computer controller or touch screen Manual kilns, or Kiln Sitter Kilns (KS), use switches that are turned up by the operator and shut off using a kiln sitter. The KilnSitter is a mechanical control that fires your kiln by the time and temperature method of heat treatment using pyrometric cones for bars. After being exposed to the proper time and temperature, the cone or bar softens and bends to a predetermined angle, shutting off the kiln. The kiln temperature and heating rate of the KilnSitter (KS) Kilns are controlled by switches which you turn up in intervals. The KilnMaster (KM) runs the kiln firing at 3 diffeent speeds or allows you to set up your own program. The KilnMaster Touchscreen (KMT) has the KilnMaster settings plus much more including wi-fi tracking.

Skutt KilnLink KilnLink is a cloud based Kiln Monitoring System that allows you to check the status of your kiln from anywhere you have access to the internet. KilnLink connects your kiln to the internet and feeds information from each firing in real time to the KilnLink Database. Authorized users just log on to their account using a computer or smart phone connected to the internet. You can even set it up to send you Email or Text alerts. Know what you kiln is doing at all hours of the day no matter where you are. You can check the current temperature, view a graph of the firing, even check multiple kilns. The peace of mind you will gain from knowing your kiln is safely off is invaluable.

Skutt EnviroVent 2 Now you can vent two kilns with one vent. The new 140 CFM Motor allows you to vent two kilns up to 12 cubic feet each, or one kiln between 12 and 24 cubic feet, with one Envirovent 2 Motor. Wall mounted means no heat and no vibration. The new design is wall mounted. This moves the vent motor away from the heat of the kiln, and the motor can no longer transfer any vibration into the kiln.

Spring loaded plenum cup retains seal throughout firing. As your kiln heats up, the brick expands. As your kiln heats up, the brick expands. The inside expands more than the cold face, or underside, which causes the slab to become slightly concave on the bottom. The result is that the center of the kiln floor moves upward at higher temperatures. The spring loaded cup follows the floor ensuring a tight seal throughout the firing process.

Negative pressure means no leaking. Since the vent is wall mounted it pulls the air through the duct work instead of pushing it. This means if your duct work were to ever form a leak the fumes would not be pushed into the room.

Olympic Electro Sitter FOB Flowery Branch, GA 30542

Electro Sitter will replace your obsolete kiln sitter model! The Electro Sitter comes complete with electronic controller of your choice for cone-fire or ramp/hold programming, an attached Type K thermocouple, ceramic fiber, and electronic controller manual. Installation is easy. The Electro Sitter will fit where the kiln sitter/timer is attached to the kiln. Simply remove the screws from the kiln sitter on the front of the kiln, then detach wires connecting to the kiln sitter. Wires will be attached to the back of the Electro Sitter exactly as they were attached to the kiln sitter terminal block. The thermocouple from the Electro Sitter goes through the kiln sitter hole and is exposed 1” inside the kiln. Use fiber to fill space in kiln sitter hole. After the Electro Sitter is installed, read the controller manual that came with it. When you are ready to programmed the controller, turn kiln switches to high. Your now have an electronically controlled kiln!

Electro Sitters may be used in any brand kiln that has a kiln sitter. The units are rated up to 50 amps, higher amperages available at an additional charge. Controller selections - 3 Key - 4 user programs for ramp-hold programming, 3K-CF - 4 user programs for ramp-hold programming and cone-fire firing schedules. V6-CF - 12 key digital controller with 6 user programs for ramp-hold programming and cone-fire firing schedules, RTC-1000 - 12 key digital controller with 6 user programs for ramp-hold programming.

If you are ordering a Kiln Sitter kiln you may want to equip it with a Skutt Analog Pyrometer. A pyrometer will let you know what the temperature of the kiln chamber is throughout the entire fir-ing. The pyrometer comes with a MI Cable Type K thermocouple and all the mounting hardware needed. The maximum temperature reading is 2500ºF.

Summit Kilns’ Electric Kiln to Gas Conversion KitsDo you have an electric kiln that is too far gone to repair? You may be able to give that old electric kiln a second life as a gas updraft kiln using a Summit Kiln burner system. Four burner systems will adapt virtually any 24” diameter kiln for natural gas or propane (specify type). Great for Raku, but conversions can be fired as high as cone 10!
