Dear Parents, Welcome to the third Newsletter of 2013. At last we have received the Grade 10 results and Certificates. Once again our Grade 10 students have achieved very pleasing results. The measure used to compare schools at this level is the Mean Rating Index (MRI) which is the mean percentage of students obtaining a Higher Pass or above across all subjects. An MRI of 50% shows that a school has achieved average results. Our MRI was 84% which indicates results that are significantly higher than the average. We have still not received either our Grade 8 Certificates or their results and hope that these will arrive before long. In Week 5 Mrs. Julie McLean, one of the IEA advisers, visited KIS once again. She was accompanied by Mrs. Lucy Kula, the manager of the IEA Centre for Professional Development. During their visit they observed a number of teachers and provided useful feedback. Julie will once again be assisting the KIS Staff in their preparations for the 2013 School Review. An external panel will visit the school in Week 4 of Term 3 after the staff have produced an internal review report. Visitors to the school might have observed a group of men carrying out a survey of part of the school grounds in Week 6. This was in preparation for the building of a new classroom block later in the year. I would like to remind you that on Monday, Tuesday and Wednes- day of next week (March 4th, 5th and 6th) the school will be closed to students. The secondary teachers will be attending ACT Moderation meetings held in Canberra. The Pri- mary teachers will be engaged in Professional Development with Julie McLean and Suzanne Savage from the IEA. Our first Parents Assembly of the year is being held at the end of Week 6 but at the end of Week 5 our Prep and Grade 1 children showed us that their theme has been Weather this term. The ‘Clash of the Houses’ count of merit awards was organised by the Grade 4/5/6 students. Mrs Sussie Emmanuel

I come from the Eastern side of the island of New Britain. This is my fifth year of teaching in Kimbe International School, however prior to joining this team; I was at Coronation College in Lae for seven years.

My teaching career has given me the opportunity to teach in both the Na-tional system and the International Education Agency, with two years each in Fiji and the Solomon Islands these have given me a total of 32 years alto-gether being in the classroom. I enjoy teaching and training as it brings me satisfaction to guide young adults into the future.

I teach Grade 8 (SOSE), Grade 9 - 12 Business Studies (TAFE), Grade 10 Personal Development, and Grade 11 and 12 Geography.

Welcome to my world! My name is Serah Thomas and I am from Bougainville. In my life time my island home has gone through many changes, politically motivated though. Politically speaking I come from the Autonomous Region of Bougainville.(AROB)

I am a trained primary school teacher and I graduated from Ma-dang Teachers College in 1981. I have taught in Bougainville prior to the Bougainville Crisis. I first moved to Kimbe in 1995 with my family after the volcanic eruption in Rabaul.

I have travelled around the world and have seen many weird and wonderful places. Often I have found out the many people around the world have very little knowledge of where Papua New Guinea is. I am often mistaken for a Caribbean or African. Luckily in the UK I am just another ordinary British citizen because there are so many black people there. I always proudly tell them; sorry, I am a Papua New Guinean. They cannot believe that there are black people in the pacific but only in Africa. Though we have problems in our young country I am proud to be a Papua New Guinean. The great things we have such as our natural environ-

ment are often over shadowed by a few negatives.

My history with KIS started in 1995 when I started work as a Classroom Assistant. There were about ninety students only at the time. I was employed as a full time IEA teacher in 1998 and I have been teaching here ever since. Kimbe International School has been my training ground over the years and has helped me grow professionally.. I have done commenced studies with Southern Cross University (Australia) but have yet to complete them—hope to do so in the near future. Teaching is a passion; I really enjoy doing it whole-heartedly. It is always a wonderful feeling when former stu-dents I have taught come out of nowhere and greet me cheerfully. At times I recognise them straight away but other times I have to guess. In a matter of years children become adults and they change a lot in their attitudes and behaviours for the better.

I believe that education is a powerful tool that transforms people’s lives and perspectives. As an edu-cationalist I strongly believe that everyone in PNG should be educated and as teachers we have the duty to teach to the best of our abilities to make a difference to a child’s life.

During my time here at KIS I have worked with many wonderful and energetic teachers who have come and gone. I believe we truly work as a team to make KIS a wonderful extra ordinary school in the whole of the IEA. It’s the only IEA School that starts from the Foundation year through to Grade 12 on one campus. I am privileged to teach here and work for an organisation like the IEA.

I have three grown-up children, Benjamin, Marie and Sam. I am proud to say that they have all been educated here at Kimbe International School. Benjamin is taking a TAFE course in Sydney whilst Marie is studying at Massey University, in New Zealand. Sam completed his Grade 12 last year here at KIS and is still trying to figure out what he wants to do in the near future. He is inter-ested in 3D graphic designs and stuff and so I hope one day he will realise his dreams.

In 1999 we bought an oil palm block at Sarakolok, Section 6 and have been living there since. Moving away from the water front at Walindi (Mahonia Na Dari) was a big change for my three children but they have managed the life on the block well as the years rolled on. Wait a minute, before I for-get the other important person in my life! My husband runs the family construction business from the block. He is a very patient man and doesn’t complain about me going home quite late from work. Maybe somehow he understands the work I do. Thank you Welsh man!

My future dream is to build fish ponds and start a hydroponic farm. Maybe chase a couple of bubus around the block in the near future but definitely I am not going to be their Foundation and Prep teacher.

Have a wonderful weekend and do give a lovely smile because it exercises more muscles than a frown!
