Kimbe International School The Right School For Your Child From the Principal Website www.kis.ac.pg ~ Email [email protected] ~ Phone 983 5078 ~ Fax 983 5579 Dear Parents, Welcome to our Week 4 newsletter for Term 2, 2011. Once again the time since our last newsletter has been quite eventful. The start of week three was, of course, a holiday but there was a good repre- sentation of our students and staff at the San Remo ANZAC Dawn Service. I pass on the thanks expressed by Mr. Ashley Bar- nes, to all those involved, for our participation once again this year. The past week has seen the commencement of our MEEP program for the Grade 9s again this year. This program uses the resources and expertise at Mahonia ‘Na Dari and is a great experience for the students. Many thanks to Mrs. Lavai for taking the responsibility of coordinating the course. Many thanks too for the continuing support of NBPOL providing transport to and from Mahonia for our students. Mrs. Lavai was also involved with the visit to Ma- honia by the Port Moresby International School Grade 12 Biology class. Our Biology students joined with them and carried out valu- able field work at Mahonia. A number of KIS teachers went out to Mahonia on Saturday night and had the pleasure of watching pres- entations on the work covered. It was commented by PMIS teach- ers how well our students were able to mix. The staff and students of PMIS were also very appreciative of the welcome given by our Grade 12s when the group visited KIS on Thursday morning. We will try to keep this link and develop it further. Unfortunately the sports competition at Mosa was cancelled last week by Mr. Stretton because of rain. I apologise to those students who turned up at Mosa before we got notice of the cancellation. We hope that the competition will get started this coming weekend. Mr. Rivera attended a series of meetings in Port Moresby last week relating to the Grade 10 and Grade 12 cur- riculum. We will be calling meetings in the near future to communicate to our school community some of the information gained in those meetings. Newsletter Number 2 Term 2 Year 2011

Ifor Jones ~ Principal

From the Principal ~ continued You may be aware that both Coronation College and Port Moresby International School are able to provide an Australian Capital Territory Year 12 Certificate for their students, when they complete their Grade 12 in PNG, and that the possession of such a certificate can assist a student in obtaining access to university courses in Australia and elsewhere outside PNG. When I arrived in 2007 contact was made with the ACT and a representative came to Kimbe. At that time it was not consid-ered that the school was ready to be allowed to join their system. Once again, I have contacted the Education Department of the Australian Capital Territory to request that we be considered to join their system. I must make it clear that there is no certainty that we will be allowed to join and that there are resourcing and financial issues to be considered. Representatives of the ACT have agreed to visit Kimbe during their visit to PNG at the end of this month. We will arrange a meeting so that the ACT system can be explained to our community and I will inform you of the timing of the meeting at a later date. I have spoken to the coordinator of the ACT program at Coronation College and understand that Coronation College offers the same range of subjects as that offered at KIS.

Next week we will be holding our Three-way Conferences so I hope everyone has returned the form requesting a conference slot. Next week will also be our Parent Assembly on Friday at 1.00 pm, hosted this time by the Grade 12s with presentations from all of the Senior School. Please try to come along and provide a good audience for our senior students.

K.I.S. ~ I.C.T. Fair 2011 (coming soon)

The ‘first of its kind’ in Kimbe International School. Individual classes will showcase what I.C.T. topics they have been discussing in class and how “Technology is changing the way” they learn and being taught. This may include software being used in classes, I.C.T. devices and also mobile phone technology and trends. The tentative day of the program is some time in term 3. Hope to see you all there!!!

Mr. Rivera :-)
