Type 2 diabetes also know as hyperglycemia means your body doesn’t use insulin properly and is called insulin resistance. Overtime the

insulin causes a build up of glucose in the blood instead of moving it to your cells,

which makes your blood glucose levels rise.

Excessive thirst Increased urination

Tingling or numbness in hands or feet Fatigue

Blurry vision Increased hunger

Wounds slow to healAmerican Diabetes Association (2013)

According to the CDC, being over weight and

lack of physical activity are the two leading causes that 95% of

Americans are diagnosed with type 2

diabetes.

Just because you have been diagnosed with this disease

doesn’t mean you have to stop eating good food. It means making

lifestyle changes that include eating healthy good food.

o Manufacturers do not need to seek FDA approval before marketing their product.

o You should always consult your doctor before using herbal supplements.

o You should research the herbal supplement you chose to use.

o Herbal supplements aren’t right for everyone.

Bitter melon is a vegetable-fruit that can be used as a food or medicine. It is rich in vitamins and minerals. The fruit contains at least three active substances with anti-diabetic properties, including charantin, which has been confirmed to have a blood glucose-lowering effect, vicine and an insulin-like compound known as polypeptide-p. These substances either work individually or together to help reduce blood sugar levels

Cinnamon is a commonly used spice that contains natural compounds that mimic the effect of insulin, as well as reducing LDL cholesterol in people with diabetes. It is high in fiber and also a rich source of magnesium, which also helps in controlling blood sugar.talkdiabetes.net (2008)

Ground flaxseeds are rich in lignans and magnesium, which helps lower blood sugar. It is also a potent source of omega-three fatty acids, which also help in controlling blood sugar.talkdiabetes.net (2008)

“Chia has the ability to help the body regulate carbohydrates and the sugars they turn into. When ingested, the chia seeds, in whatever form they were eaten, form a type of barrier inside the stomach. This barrier helps to slow the ingestion of sugar into the blood stream. This is especially helpful for diabetics who are unable to process sugars properly. By regulating the speed at which sugar enters the blood stream, chia helps to keep a diabetic level and the glucose in their blood at proper levels”Fit day (2000).

This beneficial herb is another of the foods that lower blood sugar. Garlic can raise insulin production and increase insulin sensitivity. Raw garlic has potent antioxidant properties and promotes a healthy cholesterol profile .talkdiabetes.net (2008)

It is important to eat a healthy diet and get regular exercise to also help lower blood sugar levels. Herbal supplements are a wonderful way to flavor your food and keep you blood sugar levels down, but be sure to get educated about any herbal supplement you may be considering using. Always consult your doctor to make sure what you are using is safe.
