Congratulations on many fronts!

Congratulations to the many students who entered the Write4fun 2013 school writing competition. 10 students have progressed past the initial stages and Kincumber High School has been recognised as outstanding as only a small percentage of schools showed this level of achievement. Well done to all students and teachers involved.

Future Leader Scholarships have been won by three of our Aboriginal students to support their senior schooling. The students are Aimee Young, Luke Fetin and Christian Turner. This is a fantastic result for these students and I want to thank Kerry Turner for her efforts to ensure students are able to access these extra opportunities.

Students were also invited to apply for a Bouddi Scholarship last term and the recipients will be announced at the weekend at a gala event at ‘Bells’ at Killcare. I will announce these winners in our next newsletter.

Thank you to all those parents of the 2014 Year 12 students who attended the Parent Information Evening on Wednesday night. Lara Pratt and Rod McRobie are very keen to ensure that we are all working together to support these young men and woman. Thank you to Sharon Read, Beverley Sampford and Steve Fortey for presenting, and a number of other staff for attending.

Congratulations to our Year 9 and 10 Basketball team and Mr McRobie who managed to make the final at the recent Gala Day at Niagara Park. The team played very well and their behaviour was a credit to them.

The Street Art group have just completed an amazing design on the side of the Marine Studies classroom. The students were practising their skills at Copacabana under the watchful eye of Charlie Trivers and Michelle Hamilton prior to undertaking the wall. They have done an amazing job and can be very proud of their efforts. A group of Year 9 students have also been working in the local area on a street art project depicting chickens and an eco garden. This project is also looking fantastic. Projects are funded to support the beautification of the local council area in a positive light.

As we move toward the end of 2013 it is important to remind all parents and students that school does not finish for ALL students until 18 December. The Department of Education and Communities and the school has an expectation that students will attend until this date.

World Poultry Competition

It’s not every week you can say you have entered a World Poultry Competition. Year 9 Agriculture helped perform a poultry trial comparing the egg size of Black X hens vs White X hens. They found the Black hens laid larger eggs. The report and a poster was displayed at an awards day in Brisbane. The feedback from the trial organisers indicated that our report was of a high standard, even though we were not awarded a prize.

They have invited Kincumber High School back again next year and the Year 9 Agriculture class is ready to beat the world next year.

Pampered, prepped and ready to parade!

On Friday everyone woke up at 4:00am to prepare our four steers for showing. They had to be washed, dried and groomed to make them look their best in the show ring. At 8:00am we had a team meeting and was impressed with how smart we all looked in our show uniforms.

The junior judging commenced at 8:30am. The students were required to rank the steers in the same order as the judge. Next was the steer judging and parading sections. During the afternoon we held the first Kincumber High School parading competition. Tonia Brooks was awarded best parader and received an event shirt for her efforts.

Saturday was an early start again. All the steers were paraded and looked great in the ring. This was a credit to the students who had spent so much time getting them ready for the show. In the evening we travelled to the Scone Saleyards for the unled judging. Kincumber was awarded 4th prize and received a great package of cattle products. This was a tremendous effort as we were competing against approximately 50 schools.

Sunday was our third early start in a row. It was a credit seeing everyone take the challenge and look so professional after three days of hard work. All through the morning students cared for the health and welfare of the steers and judged and paraded to the best of their ability.

It was a sad moment for our students when they took their steers to the pens for the last time. We all agreed that this has been a great year of learning, having overcome many difficult moments. We are all looking forward to build on the success of this year next year.

We packed up quickly and left Scone at 2:30pm on Sunday arriving home at 6:00pm. We took many photos while away and have enjoyed reliving the trip. Two teachers and 16 very tired students arrived back at Kincumber proud of what they had achieved. Looking forward to next year.

Mural, Mural on the wall!

On 10 October and 22 October a range of students from Years 7– 12 took part in the creation of a mural with the help of Charlie Trivers from the Gosford Graffiti Art Project. The mural was a chance for students to experience the art of aerosol. The first session was spent planning the mural based around the theme ‘marine’. After a morning of planning a decision was reached and by the afternoon a basic outline was sprayed onto the wall.

The second session was practical based and students learnt aerosol skills and techniques, including the function and purpose of a variety of caps. The end result was amazing and everyone was ecstatic with the final design and ‘mission mural’ was finally accomplished.

Overall, it was a great couple of days for the students involved and we learnt a great deal. A special thank you to Charlie for his wonderful expertise.

Sammy Mills-Withers

I was extremely proud of all the students who were involved in this project. They were the driving force behind the success of this fabulous creation, from the quirky creatures within the composition to the environmental story line. I am looking forward to our next massive ‘mission mural’……the Ag demountable.

Semester 2 Assessment and Reporting

As the HSC exams move towards completion for our 2013 Year 12 cohort the new Year 12 2014 group have commenced their HSC studies. Students have received their Final Preliminary Reports and are currently making decisions re amendments for their pattern of study and preparing for their assessment program which commences this term.

Year 10 are preparing for their RoSA exams which are scheduled for next Thursday / Friday November 7 and 8 as per the school calendar. These exams, along with other assessment tasks done this year, contribute to the RoSA grade to be submitted to the Board of Studies. The exam schedule is as follows:

Thursday November 7: Mathematics – 1.5 hours; English - 2 hours;

Friday November 8: Science - 1.5 hours; Geography- 1 hour; History - 1 hour.

Students were issued with a copy of their timetable at last Friday’s Roll Assembly and informed of exam rules. Absence from these exams is only acceptable in extreme circumstances of illness or misadventure which must be supported with a medical certificate dated the day of the exam. Please note that your son/daughter cannot have their mobile phone switched on or in their possession during the exams and that no passouts will be issued for these two days. Please review the exam rules on the reverse side of the information sheet supplied to your son/daughter if a Year 10 parent.

Of further note to parents of Year 10 is that all students have been required to sit the All My Own Work program which covers the ethics of exams and assessments. Any student who does not abide by these during the exams is at risk of a zero mark and not meeting requirements for their RoSA.

Assessment programs for Years 7 to 9 are also moving towards the reporting stage. Reports for each of the cohorts 7 to 10 will be underway during the next five weeks with distribution scheduled for Monday December 16. Reports will not be available prior to this date.

Maths Faculty says thank you KHS P&C

Term 4 is busy with yearly assessments, reports and organising classes for the following year. Students should continue to work until the end of the year, as Mathematics staff will continue to cover new content until then. Many of our courses run for the full two years and the knowledge and skills gained in the first year are required in the second year.

To assist our students, Kincumber High P&C has kindly donated a full set of the latest Casio calculators for use by our students. They are located in the library and can be borrowed in the same manner as a book, for either short term (for example if you have an exam and have forgotten your calculator) or long term if you cannot afford to buy your own. We are very appreciative of this donation, although we still encourage our students to buy their own calculators.

Students who have been commended by their teachers for working consistently this term are Mitchell Shoults, Amy Lawrence, Luke Goodley and Lana Griffiths. Each of these students received a ‘Student of the Week’ postcard through the mail.

A reminder that students who have been participating in our National Partnerships Numeracy lessons can access the computer resources at home via edmodo. Extra practice will be beneficial in further improving the skills we have been working on.

White yabby needs a name

The NSW Yabby variety is a Blue claw freshwater crayfish. Yabbies are genetically blue, but will change colour to that which is most suitable for camouflage in the wild. Yabbies can be any colour blue, black, white, brown, red, green or any combination. In Science, our white yabby has tried to camouflage himself with the white rocks in the aquarium. Come and see us in Science to name him.
