Which standards do we teach and assess effectively ?

Which standards could we do better in terms of rigor and/or assessment?

Which standards do we not address at all?

Key DetailsComprehension and Collaboration- Participate in collaborative conversations with diverse partners about kindergarten topics and texts with peers in groups

SLK1a -We do guide the children into following rules for discussion

SLK1b- continue conversation through multiple exchanges

SLK 2. Confirm understanding of a text read aloud or information presented orally by asking and answering questions about details

SLK3. Ask and answer questions to seek help, get information or clarify something that is not understoodWe use Willy the Wisher Stories to help students understand the process of questioning and how it is used. It is very effective in assessing how a student’s though process is developed.

We could do better at helping them be a part of making those rules and demonstrating listening and speaking etiquette with the use of skits and puppetryWe are discovering that through more small group work, the students are much more engaged in interactive conversation

More use of media such as the internet and Smartboard interactive software to answer questionsUsing teams and buddies to help each other in small groupsStudents use signal responses to answer questions about read aloud texts

Use more questioning during activity times.Students use signal cads to request assistance

Standards for Kindergarten Speaking and Listening

Presentation of Knowledge and ideas

SLK4. Describe familiar people, places, things and events, and with prompting, provide additional detail. DRA assessment and reading provides an adequate resource for this standard

SLK5. Add drawings or other visual displays to descriptions as desired to provide more detailOur students add detail to line drawings using illustrations or realia.

SLK6. Speak audibly and express thoughts, feelings, and ideas clearly. We use show and tell as a way to facilitate this standard. Our students also lead the morning meeting each day, presenting chart details and constructing sentences orally to describe shapes other concepts displayed on the charts.

We would like to use more role play, Journaling, and project work with our students in groups to generate more interest and excitementEncouragement to become involved in interactive play more often would allow teachers to observe and interact with students in a more personal way to help them grow in this area.Use Make a Movie in your Mind Strategy to visualize details of topics and share with partners.

Use puppets, mobiles and paper bag costumes to add descriptive details

Students sit in the Author Chair and share their sentences and stories.
