GARFIELD SCHOOL NEWS

MAY 2019

FROM MRS. FERGUSON’s Another Year Has Gone ByAs the month of May is coming to an end, so is another school year here at Garfield Elementary and what a year it has been!

We came back to school in the Fall as if we were coming into a new building.  Last summer saw the installation of a new roof, new heating and air conditioning, and fresh paint throughout the entire building.

Safety measures continued to increase with all staff members required to wear key fobs, the installation of a raptor system for all visitors to obtain background checks, additional security cameras installed along with a full time resource officer each day. We have had practice fire drills, tornado drills and intruder drills.

Curriculum changes included the beginning of our Super Kids reading program, review of new materials in the areas of Math and Science, and the inclusion of our intervention specialists going into the classrooms.  With the implementation of these changes, data shows that all of our students have grown throughout the year.

In the area of science, the kids have adopted class pets, watched chickens hatch and expanded their knowledge in the area of S.T.E.M.

We have seen our kids accomplish great things this past year including music programs, art projects and many physical fitness activities.

Health activities included eye screenings by the Lion’s Club and a visit from the Mobile Dentist.

We collected food for our families and helped to provide Christmas gifts to many.

Our P.T.O. continued to be active and sponsor many fundraisers throughout the year.  Each grade level team of staff was responsible for spearheading a particular project.  Not only did this prove to help distribute the responsibilities for everyone, but each class received at least one all-expense paid field trip for our kids.  Places visited included Hozak’s Pumpkin Farm, the movies, Carnegie Science Center, the Pittsburgh Children’s Museum, the Pro Football Hall of Fame, and Oh Wow.

This year we celebrated our first “Princess Ball.”  The daughters and their fathers looked beautiful and handsome.  Everyone danced the night away.

As our third graders anxiously await the results of their AIR tests, they got a glimpse of what the future may hold.  Numerous alumni came for Career Day to talk with the kids.  They then were given the opportunity to visit the Columbiana County Career and Technical Center.

In closing I believe you would agree that it has been a very engaging and exciting school year.  I cannot thank you enough for sharing your kids with me each and every day. I am so blessed to be part of a staff that loves and cares about our kids and their families. It has been my pleasure to have been a small part of their elementary education.

Hope to see you next year!

Preschool NewsWhat a year it has been! There have been many highs and a few lows this year. Through it all though, we have come together as a class, a school, and as a supportive community. We know we are stronger together and this is important to foster early in life. So this is a sincere thank you to our kids, our staff, our families, and our community for all the support you have given us throughout the year!

This year we have held 4 P.I.E. Nights; each one with a great turnout of children, families, and staff. The last P.I.E. Night was extra special as we hosted the K-7 Art Show along with an Open House to showcase the many wonderful changes to our building. Our last day for preschool will be Thursday May 30th. At 6:30 on this night we will "graduate" 17 preschoolers; it is with open arms and hearts that we end this year on such a positive note. We hope you all have a safe, fun, Summer break and we look forward to seeing in the Fall!                           Sincerely,                                                       Mrs. Dieringer                           Mrs, McCartney                           Mrs. Dotson                           Mr. Scott

From the nurse’s office Let’s Talk About Lice

Does it make your head itch just hearing the word lice? The mere thought of these parasitic pests tends to strike fear in the hearts of parents everywhere. The bad news is that they probably aren’t going anywhere – lice have been around for thousands of years and they are very adaptable. The good news is that you can (and will!) survive if you get the dreaded phone call from school that your child needs treated for head lice.

Lice are tiny bugs that live in human hair. You can’t get lice from your dog or cat or parakeet – only other people. Lice have to have heat from the human scalp and human blood to survive. Without a human host, they only live a maximum of 48 hours. Lice are designed to live in hair and they can crawl around very quickly on a scalp. But that’s really the only environment where they move well. Lice don’t jump or hop or fly. Off of a human head, they are clumsy crawlers and it’s highly unlikely a louse (the singular of lice) will crawl onto you from a desk or chair.

So how does a person get lice? Head to head contact is the most common method of transfer. You’ve probably been warned not to share brushes or hair accessories, and that’s great advice, but to successfully avoid lice, you have to keep your head to yourself. Try not to let your head (or your child’s head) touch anyone else’s when you’re in close physical contact, like hugging.

But sometimes even the most cautious folks find themselves staring down a brigade of bugs on their child’s head. So now what? Getting rid of lice takes a LOT of work. Unfortunately, they cannot be washed out of the hair with regular shampoo and water. You will need to use an over-the-counter or prescription solution on the hair that is formulated to kill the adult bugs. But keep in mind that lice treatments often don’t kill the eggs (called nits) or the juvenile bugs. Getting rid of those requires meticulous combing. And more combing. And then some more combing. The combing is done with a specially designed lice comb that pulls out the nits and any remaining live bugs.

You probably won’t get everything out in one sitting – it can take many hours to comb the hair completely clean. And you’ll need to do some cleaning around the house, as well. Bed sheets, pillows, and coats will need to be washed thoroughly. You can bag up the stuffed animals and leave them outside or in the basement for several days. Couches, chairs, and car seats will have to be vacuumed.

There is no magic secret for getting lice out of your house. It takes work and you have to be diligent about following the directions for the treatment, combing the hair often, and checking and rechecking your child’s head.

Parents often get frustrated when their child can’t seem to shake a head lice infestation and they turn to home remedies or advice from others. While some of these solutions might have some validity, please use caution and common sense when applying them. There is no need to cut your child’s hair if he/she gets lice. Lice live on the scalp, so snipping a few inches off the ends does nothing to cure the problem. Lice can survive under water for 24 hours, so it’s unlikely that they can be suffocated. Kerosene, gasoline, and lamp oil are toxic chemicals and could seriously harm your child, so please do not use those in an attempt to get rid of lice.

It has been well documented that lice can affect anyone – young, old, short, tall, wealthy, poor, clean, or dirty. These bugs don’t discriminate when finding a host, but there is definitely a social stigma that comes with this particular problem. My best advice is try not to panic if your child winds up with lice. These bugs don’t carry any diseases and they pose zero threat to our health. They are certainly a nuisance and they certainly create a burden on families, but they can be defeated. Again, it takes a lot of work and a lot of patience, but you won’t have lice in your house forever.

Mr. Bunfill-MusicElementary music students are finishing up this school year with a variety of activities. The 3rd grade chorus will present a brief program entitled Oceans of Fun on Wednesday, May 22nd at 6:00 pm before the high school choir concert. The kindergarten and 1st grade students will present their program entitled “I Like School” on Thursday, May 23rd at 6pm and 7:30pm. 3rd grade general music students are learning about folk music from other countries along with applying body percussion patterns to songs with beats in groups of three. 2nd grade general music students are studying the brass family of instruments. Thank you to all the students for making it a great year!

Mrs. Fluharty-GymHere we are again coming to another end of year! Please continue to encourage your children to move, move, move during the summer. One way they can get exercise is to walk to the Wellsville Library Summer Reading Program if you live within walking distance.

I hope everyone has a great summer!

See you in the fall!

Ms. Roth-ArtOn Monday, May 13th we had our K-7 art show! Thank you so much to all who attended. Artwork Portfolios will be sent home May 20th-24th. Thank you so much for a great year! Have a great summer!

School Specialists Mrs. Logan Mrs. EvelsizerThis has been an exciting year as I have been teaching phonics in all of the kindergarten and first grade classrooms. I go into the classrooms and teach all of the students. The kindergarten students have learned vowels, consonants, digraphs, and some glued sounds. This will prepare them for first grade when they hear these terms. The first grade classes have learned all of the above plus many more glued sounds, vowel teams, r controlled vowels and suffix -s. They have also learned syllable types and how to split a word into syllables to sound it out. Ask your child to show you how to split a word to read it.

Please read to and with your child this summer to improve and maintain reading skills.

Happy Summer,

Mrs. LoganTitle I Reading Teacher

It has been a busy school year in second grade! Our transition to a new reading program has been exciting! The students have really enjoyed getting to know the Superkids and read about the Superkids’ adventures. Lots of progress is evident. It has been my pleasure to support each second grade classroom. We have practiced spelling patterns and phonics to read new words, read and discussed stories by making predictions, drawing conclusions, and sequencing story events. Additionally, in writing we have learned to apply phonics and spelling patterns to write words. Students have learned to sharpen writing skills by creating friendly letters, narratives, and responding to questions about the stories they have read.

It’s been a busy year! (and fast!!) Hopefully over the summer you will have some time to visit our Carnegie Library here in town. Our library is a wonderful community resource to enjoy. On a hot summer day, it is a comfortable place to enjoy a good book or a magazine. With a library card, you can also enjoy a digital book on a tablet or phone. Our Carnegie Library can be reached at (330) 532-1526! Have a wonderful summer!

Mrs. Klakos -Title I

As the school year comes to an end, all of our students in grades kindergarten through third have completed online MAP assessments in both Reading and Math. Second and Third Grades have also taken a Reading Fluency assessment as well. Any parent who is interested in finding out how well his/her child has progressed over the last nine months based on the test can call the office to set up an appointment with me. I would be more than happy to share your child’s results. If you are a parent of Second or Third Grade student, I strongly encourage you to have your child continue throughout the summer to complete ONE page per week day in his/her Simple Solutions workbook. The cyclical review will be of great benefit to your child!!!

Kindergarten and First Grade NewsKINDERGARTEN

The kindergarten year is over! For some of our students, this was their first year in school. For others who had preschool, they were seasoned professionals! We are so proud of the progress that your students have shown and would like to thank you for all of your help and support along the way! They are ready for first grade!

The students will enjoy a grade level picnic at Hammond Park at the end of the school year. This will give us time to relax, socialize, and celebrate all of this years’ hard work! We will also be honoring the students at a kindergarten awards ceremony on May 23rd!

Also on May 23rd, the students have a Spring Mini- Musical, led by the wonderful Mr. Bunfill!

We recently had an informative and fun- filled field trip to OH WOW! Science Center in Youngstown, Ohio. We encourage you to make the trip this summer with your child. Some of the activities included: a water table, a wind tunnel, an electricity center, a life size air plane and controllers, a TV news station, and much more!

We also want to thank Mrs. Klakos for the exciting activities for Right to Read Week: a petting zoo, a milking cow, a day to make our own ice cream, line dancing instruction, and various farm and rodeo crafts!

The students thoroughly enjoyed the new reading series, SuperKids! Not only did they love the characters and stories, but they learned a lot of important skills along the way.

Remember to read to and with your children over the summer. Reading aloud to children is the number one indicator of later academic success!

We blinked and the school year ended! We cannot believe that our days with your wonderful kiddos are numbered! However, we are going out with a bang!

We kicked off the end of the school year with our Sweet Reading Challenge and our Yummy Math Challenge. Both enticed the students with sweet treats that engaged them in reading and math! We also began our Alphabet Countdown. Each day a new letter comes with a new activity. Many of our activities are highlighted on Garfield’s Facebook Page and we encourage you to check them out! We have had Cotton Candy Day, Dog Day, Kindness Day, Movie Day, and so much more; the kiddos love this and so do we!

First grade also attended a third field trip that was completely free! We attended the Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh and enjoyed an afternoon of engaging activities and creative craft making! We also introduced 16 new members to our grade! Miss Householder’s class hatched 16 out of 17 eggs! Everyone enjoyed the learning process and interacting with the chicks! In addition to that, our students will participate in their very first field day! Activities include, slides, bounce houses, ice

Second Grade Summer News We are so proud of the progress our students have made this year! They are such hard workers. The children have developed wonderful reading and writing skills. We are also very pleased with their math and problem solving skills! It has been so much fun being a part of their growth. Thank you for the opportunity to work together. We have greatly enjoyed it. During the summer months it is critical that the children continue to read and write. The library is a great place to visit! They offer a fun Summer Reading Program in addition to having a very nice selection of children’s books. Keeping your child’s reading skills sharp will help him/her be ready to start third grade. As with anything else, practice makes perfect. The children have done a great job with their addition and subtraction facts! Fact fluency makes adding and subtracting with regrouping so much easier for the kids so it’s beneficial to review them occasionally during the break. Thank you for all of your support. Without your cooperation and help, the children would not be as successful. Have a relaxing, fun summer!

Second and Third Grade News

Third Grade Summer NewsIt was a pleasure to have your children in our classrooms this year. We learned so many things and progressed in so many ways since the first day of school. As the year comes to an end, we return your children to you, the same children that you entrusted in our care last fall. We return your children a few pounds heavier, a few inches taller, months wiser, and more responsible. Even though your children would have grown without our help, it was been an absolute privilege to see their personalities grow as we laid the foundation for future learning. Together, we laughed, played, studied, learned and enriched our lives. Remember that we will always be interested in your children and their destiny, wherever they go, whatever they do, and whoever they become.

Miss Pease, Mrs. Reese, and Mrs. Stoddard

Mrs. Beck-SpeechAnother year has flown by!  The end of the school year is filled with joys.  I am thrilled to see the amazing progress that has happened with the students at Garfield.  As I think back to the beginning of the year, there were so many questions that I had about our kids and how to make them stronger and eager to learn.  Now, they are asking the coolest questions because they are excited about learning.  I am blessed to continue to see our third grade students as they move on to Daw in the Fall.  They are always surprised to see me there!

As the summer is upon us, remember to encourage your children to read and talk about the things they do each day.  Kids have really cool thoughts to share and they are excited to share with someone willing to listen.  I look forward to seeing everyone back in August after some relaxation and fun!
