Week 9 – 22nd

March 2017 Sharing Our News Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL)

Throughout Term 1 our teachers and students spend time revisiting each of

our KSPS school values. I have included our poster on how to be safe in all

areas of our school. You may like to discuss this with your child.

Parent Teacher Interviews

We are now in the middle of our Parent/Teacher Interviews. Thank you to all

of our parents and caregivers who have made time to come in and see their

child’s class teacher. At these interviews your child’s teacher will give you

an overview of how you child is progressing and will outline some future

focus areas. This year we are trialling something new; each child will receive

a PLAN Feedback to Parents Overview report. This report will give you an

indication of your child’s achievements in the areas of Literacy and

Numeracy, also providing activities that your child can participate in at home

to support their learning. If you have not been able to make the scheduled

day for your interviews, please contact your child’s class teacher to arrange

an alternative time.

Tell Them From Me Survey

Our students in Years 4, 5 & 6 will again have the opportunity to participate

in the Tell Them From Me Survey. This survey is conducted twice a year

and it asks our students questions about school, what lessons they find

engaging and what can we do to improve our school. This will be the third

year KSPS has participated in the survey and the data gathered helps us to

plan for positive changes to our school. More information will be sent home

later this week.

Please Support the P&C Easter Raffle We are creeping up to the end of the term and our P&C are busy preparing

the annual ‘Monster Easter Raffle’. They will greatly appreciate any

donations. I am looking forward to seeing everyone at the Easter Hat

Parade on the last day of term.

Have a great week,

High Standard of Candidates for 009

The second step of the 009 Leadership journey is

now complete for our Year 6 students. Each student

that nominated was interviewed last Friday by our

School Captains and a member of staff. The

feedback has been that the candidates spoke very

well in their interviews and are taking the opportunity

to become a 009 Leader very seriously.

Congratulations!

The 009 Leadership Training Day and Camp will be

held on Thursday and Friday next week. During this

time our Year 5 students will be visiting Singleton

Pre-school to begin forming some friendships with

children who may be attending our school next year.

This is an opportunity for Year 5 to start exploring

their leadership skills.

Have you Created a Design for our Bins?

We are inviting our students to take part in a

competition to ‘dress up’ our garbage bins,

encouraging everyone to continue using them

therefore keeping our environment litter free.

In today’s newsletter there is a template for designs

to be drawn on and there are spare copies in the

office. When doing your design please have your

spelling checked, colour it in brightly and return it to

the office when it is completed. Designs are due

back to school by the end of this term.

If you would like to submit a digital entry, download

our templates online at http://wheeliedesigns.com/

and email the school high quality Jpeg/PDF/EPS

files to [email protected].

Book Club

Book Club orders are due back to school

TOMORROW, Thursday, 23rd March.

Our Quest to Create 200 Stars has Begun

Our commitment to the "ONE MILLION STARS TO

END VIOLENCE" was launched last Friday and the

project is well underway.

“One Million Stars to End Violence” is a peaceful

global weaving project that engages communities in

a conversation about ending all forms of violence.

We have pledged to weave 200 stars by July this

year to show our support towards ending violence in

our school and our community. Each star that we

weave will represent our school’s commitment

towards a bullying and violence free environment.

Our stars will be part of an art installation that will be

viewed at the Commonwealth Games on the Gold

Coast in 2018. Mrs Tan and some of our dedicated

Year 6 students are leading the way, helping our

younger students as we strive towards our goal.

Colorful New Resource for K/1B

K/1B have had a wonderful addition to their

classroom thanks to a very creative Mr Burgess. He

has built a colourful 'grocery store' and 'post office'

for the students to use in their literacy lessons.

'Talking and Listening' is a very important part of

literacy and this new resource is fantastic for

children to interact with each other. The students

love it and are reaping the benefits of this new

resource daily.

Social Skills Develop in The Yarning Place

Our school takes the wellbeing of our students very

seriously and we want to create a safe and

supportive learning environment where all our

student’s needs are being met to the best of our

ability. This year, KSPS has been trialing a new

system to support our students in the playground by

providing a calm place for students to socialise and

connect with their peers- it’s called the The Yarning

Place. Everyone is welcome!

The Yarning Place also allows our supportive

teachers to help students in a safe and calm place

who might be having difficulty joining games in the

playground or sorting out disagreements. If students

make a behaviour mistake, this is a place where

logical and fair steps can be made to help our

students reflect and learn the expected behaviours

at our school. Thank you to all the students who are

taking the opportunity to use The Yarning Place and

develop these valuable life skills.

It’s Almost Easter Raffle Time!

It’s that time of year again where our

P&C start preparing for our ‘Monster

Easter Raffle’. Thanks to the

generosity of our families we are able

to draw over 100 prizes each year.

Any donations of Easter Eggs or chocolate for our

raffle will be very much appreciated. The raffle will

be drawn on Thursday, 6th April with the major prize

winners announced at the Easter Hat Parade the

following day. Everyone that donates something will

go in to a special draw. Please leave all donations at

the office. Thank you for your support.

School Banking Day is Thursday

Remember, Thursday is school banking

day. Thank you to our volunteers and to

everyone who supports the School Banking

Program at our school.

Visit from the Past

Yesterday I had the pleasure of meeting Bob Wade.

Mr Wade visited our school to see if a tree he

planted back in 1959 was still standing. The original

Principal of our school, Mr David Leithhead was

quite a visionary and spent countless hours

designing and then planting the environment on

which our school now stands. Students walked from

Hunter Street School to weed the site, dig out

bindies as well as tend to pumpkin vines which were

planted here. The pumpkins were sold to raise

money to buy seedlings for the trees that now stand.

Mr Wade and his friend planted the very first tree in

the line of trees known as Centenary Avenue. These

are the beautiful trees lining the fence behind our

hall. He was very happy to see it alive and well and

it was great listening to his memories of this time.

The Early Action for Success team is looking for

donations to support K-2 classes to set up ‘Learning

Centres’. Learning Centres provide students with an

authentic purpose for writing such as an office, a

restaurant, a science centre for investigation and a

post office. Mr Burgess’s creation of a grocery store

and post office in K/1B is an excellent example.

We are looking for donations such as interesting

writing material in new/good condition. Items we

can use include unused greeting cards, note paper,

postcards, note pads of any size/colour/shape, or

envelopes. We are also looking for old telephones

(push button or dial ones), cash registers,

typewriters, toy kitchens, plastic food and plastic

cooking utensils.

If you have anything that students can use to write

on that is in good condition and you no long use or

need, we would appreciate your donation. Items can

be delivered to the Early Action for Success room

which is in the Kindergarten building, or to the office.

We are not asking you to buy these items, but if you

wish to get rid of them we would appreciate them. If

you have something at home and are unsure

whether they would be suitable, please do not

hesitate to speak to either Wendy Tan or Michele

Keith.

Wellbeing of our Students Valued

Please be aware that we have two immune-

suppressed students at our school. If your child

develops a contagious disease, please let the school

know ASAP so we can act accordingly.

Save the Date!

Cracker Night is only 2 months

away! This major P&C fundraiser will be held on

Friday, 12th May.

If you are able to contribute in any way it will be

greatly appreciated. We need people to help co-

ordinate and serve at stalls, as well as set up on the

day. Please see P&C members or our office staff.

Opportunity to Receive Newsletter by Email

We would like to offer families once again the

opportunity to receive the weekly newsletter by

email.

If you would like to receive a digital copy of the

newsletter please let our office staff know and we

will add you to our distribution list.

UNIVERSITY OF NSW 2017

International Competitions and Assessments for Schools (ICAS)

Each year King Street Public School offers our students the opportunity to participate in the UNSW

International Competitions and Assessments for Schools (ICAS).

Students from Year 3-6 have the opportunity to enter Digital Technologies, English, Mathematics, Science

and Spelling.

Regardless of students’ results, they get a wonderful opportunity to experience and master the skills of

external testing. Sometimes students can have the knowledge but not the confidence when they are put

into this sort of environment. As there is more external testing happening right across our educational

system, it makes sense to offer them this opportunity if we can.

All students receive a certificate and an individual report.

Please return the attached form for each child to the school office with payment.
